Custom Cardboard Shelf Bins

from £0.25 a binPriced per job · low minimums

Custom cardboard shelf bins turn a run of open shelving into an organised pick face, with every part, product or spare in its own labelled bin. The cut-away front lets staff see and grab stock without pulling the bin out, and we size them to your shelves so nothing is wasted.

Why Warehouses Use Corrugated Bins

Plastic bins are tough, but they are also bulky to store, expensive to buy in quantity and awkward to resize when a layout changes. Corrugated shelf bins arrive flat, fold up in seconds and cost a fraction as much per bin. When a product line ends or a shelf is reorganised, a new set of bins in different sizes is easy to order.

They are especially useful for businesses with many small SKUs: electrical components, fasteners, spare parts, cosmetics, stationery, craft supplies and phone accessories. Each item gets its own bin, labelled on the front, so pickers do not have to dig through mixed boxes.

Cardboard is also quiet and light. Pulling bins on and off shelves does not create the clatter of plastic, and a full shelf of bins is easy for staff to rearrange by hand.

For busy peaks or a temporary overflow area, cardboard bins can be set up for a few weeks and then flattened and stored, something that is not practical with racks of rigid plastic. Overflow stock in larger cartons can go in our printed storage boxes for stock rooms until a shelf frees up.

How a Shelf Bin Is Shaped

A typical shelf bin has a full-height back and sides that slope down towards a lower front lip. The cut-away front gives access from the aisle, while the lip stops small parts spilling. Bins fold from a single piece of board and lock without tape or glue, with double-thickness walls in the key places for strength.

Options include dividers to split a bin into compartments, a label holder or printed label panel on the front lip, and hanging tabs on the back for louvred panels. For very small parts, a half-height bin keeps items visible on a deep shelf.

A thumb hole in the back panel is another small extra that helps, letting staff lift a bin off a high shelf without tipping its contents forward. On very busy pick faces, a fold-over reinforcing strip along the front lip stops it softening from repeated hand contact. If you need to split bins into cells, our shelf bin dividers cut to size are made to the same measurements.

  • Standard sloped-front bin for general picking
  • Bins with internal dividers for small mixed parts
  • Double-wall bins for heavier stock
  • Narrow bins for long, thin items

Sizing Cardboard Shelf Bins to Your Racking

Measure the depth of your shelves and the clear height between them. Bins should be a little shorter than the shelf depth so they do not overhang the edge, and low enough that they can be pulled forward without catching the shelf above. Then decide how many bins you want across each shelf and divide the usable width by that number.

Choosing a few standard widths, such as narrow, medium and wide, while keeping the same depth and height, lets you mix bin sizes on a shelf and still have a neat, even front edge. That makes a pick face easy to read and keeps labels in a straight line.

Common shelf depths are around 300, 400 and 600 mm. Send us the measurements and the number of bins per shelf and we will suggest a set of sizes that fill the space efficiently.

Allow for how heavy a full bin will be. A wide, deep bin full of metal fittings can be too heavy to pull forward safely from a high shelf, so put the heaviest bins low and keep high shelves for lighter lines. The measuring guide for custom packaging explains how to take internal and external sizes.

Board Grades and Printing

Single-wall corrugated board suits light stock such as cosmetics, stationery and packaged electronics. Double-wall board handles heavier parts, such as fixings, fittings and metal components, and bins that are pulled in and out many times a day.

Printing is optional but useful. A printed coloured front lip makes zones easy to see: blue for one product group, green for another. A printed label panel gives staff a neat area for the SKU, description and barcode. Brands that use bins in a retail stock room or a visible back-of-house area sometimes print their logo on the sides.

White board looks cleaner in customer-facing areas, while brown kraft is the economical choice for warehouses.

Setting Up a Better Pick Face

Place fast-moving products in bins at waist and chest height, where pickers can reach without bending or stretching. Use larger bins for high-volume lines so they need refilling less often, and smaller bins for slow movers. Group related products together so a typical order can be picked from one aisle.

Label every bin with a location code as well as the product. If stock moves, the code tells staff where to look, and it makes stock counts quicker. A printed label panel with space for a barcode sticker means bins can be scanned as part of a stock system.

Look again at the layout every few months. Sales patterns shift, and a bin that was a fast mover at launch may now belong on a top shelf, freeing prime space for whatever is selling now. Because cardboard bins are cheap, swapping sizes as the business changes is painless. Small electrical lines in printed charger boxes are typical of the stock that fills the mid-height bins.

Beyond the Warehouse

Shelf bins are equally useful in workshops, garages, school resource rooms, libraries, hospital stores and retail stock rooms. Small online sellers working from a spare room or a unit often find a wall of labelled bins the single best change they can make to packing speed.

Retailers sometimes use printed bins on the shop floor for loose items like socks, small accessories or sweets, where an open-front bin invites customers to browse and pick.

Craft and hobby shops use them in the same way for beads, threads and small kits, where a neat run of labelled bins makes a crowded range easy to browse.

Teachers and nursery staff like them for resources too, as children can see what is in each bin and put things back where they belong. Shops selling loose accessories often pair the bins with printed phone case boxes hung on the same wall.

Cardboard Shelf Bins Questions

What buyers ask before ordering cardboard shelf bins.

Are cardboard bins strong enough for parts?

Yes, with the right board. Single-wall suits light stock, while double-wall handles heavier parts and frequent handling.

How do I size bins for my shelves?

Measure shelf depth and clear height, then choose bins slightly shorter than the depth and low enough to pull forward easily.

Can bins have dividers?

Yes. Internal dividers split a bin into compartments for small mixed items.

Do the bins need tape or glue?

No. They fold and lock from a single piece of board.

Can the front lip be colour-coded?

Yes. A printed coloured lip makes zones easy to see on a busy pick face.

Is there space for barcodes?

We can print a label panel with a clear area for barcode stickers and location codes.

Can I mix bin widths on one shelf?

Yes. Keep the same depth and height and vary the width for a neat, even front edge.

Do bins work on louvred panels?

We can add hanging tabs on the back for louvred wall panels.

Are cardboard bins cheaper than plastic?

Usually much cheaper per bin, and they ship and store flat, though plastic lasts longer in very heavy use.

Can I use printed bins on a shop floor?

Yes. White board with your logo and a printed front looks tidy for browsing loose items.

How are bins delivered?

Flat in bundles, ready to fold up when you need them.
