What an Insert Does

A box protects a product from the outside world. An insert protects it from the box. Without one, a bottle can rattle against the walls, a set of jars can knock together and a phone can slide to one end. A well-cut insert holds each item in its own place, so it survives the journey and is presented exactly as you intended when the lid opens.

Inserts also do a lot for presentation. A row of products set into a printed card tray looks deliberate and premium. A foam insert with cut-outs makes a gift set feel like a set. Dividers turn a single carton into a box of six bottles. And an insert can make one box size work for several products.

Insert Types

  • Folded card inserts with die-cut holes for bottles and jars
  • Corrugated inserts and dividers for heavier items
  • Foam inserts with cut-outs for electronics, glass and gift sets
  • Wrapped greyboard platforms for rigid gift boxes

How We Size an Insert

Send the dimensions of each item and how you want them arranged. If shapes are complex, a photo with a ruler next to the product helps. We design the insert and the box together, so they fit each other. Inserts are most often paired with custom rigid boxes and mailers.

Insert Materials Compared

The right insert depends on weight, fragility and how the product should look when the box opens:

MaterialStrengthLookGood for
Folding cardLightPrintable, cleanCosmetics, small gift sets
CorrugatedMedium to heavyPlain or printedBottles, jars, kits in mailers
FoamShock absorbingBlack or whiteGlass, electronics, precision parts
Wrapped greyboardFirmPremium, coveredRigid gift boxes
DividersMediumSimple cellsSeveral bottles in one carton

For several bottles in one shipping carton, corrugated box dividers in a grid are usually the simplest answer.

What We Need to Size an Insert

If you can, send one of each product, or a photo next to a ruler. Cut-outs are made a fraction larger than the product so it presses in and lifts out without tearing the insert.

  1. The exact size of each product, including caps and handles.
  2. How the products should sit: standing, lying flat or angled.
  3. The inside size of the box, or let us size the box around the insert.
  4. Whether the insert should lift out to reveal anything underneath.
  5. How the box travels, so we can allow for movement in transit.

Inserts That Help Presentation

An insert decides how the product is seen when the lid lifts. A raised platform lifts a single item up to meet the eye. A tiered insert shows several items at different heights. A printed card insert can carry a message, instructions or the name of each product in its slot.

Thumb cut-outs beside each item make products easy to lift out. For boxes that open like a book, an insert in the lid as well as the base holds both halves of a set. Pair an insert with hinged magnetic gift boxes for the most premium presentation.

Foam with cut-outs holds each piece in place.

Box Inserts Questions

What customers ask before ordering box inserts.

Which insert material suits my product?

Card for light products and neat presentation, corrugated for heavier items and dividers, foam for fragile or valuable items such as glass and electronics.

Can I order inserts without boxes?

Yes, if you already have boxes. Send the internal size of the box and the size of each product.

Can inserts be printed?

Card and corrugated inserts can be printed, which is useful for product names under each slot or a short message. Foam is supplied plain in black or white.

How do you make the cut-outs fit?

We size each cut-out from your product dimensions with a small allowance. A photo with a ruler helps for unusual shapes.

Do inserts add much to the price?

It depends on the material and the complexity. The custom quote shows the insert as a separate line so you can compare.

Can one box hold different products with an insert?

Yes. A well-planned insert can let one box size carry several product combinations.

Do you make bottle dividers?

Yes. Corrugated dividers slot together into a grid that splits a carton into cells, so each bottle or jar is kept apart in transit.

Can I add an insert to a mailer box?

Yes. Card and corrugated inserts work well in mailers. See custom mailer boxes.

Can I order inserts in a different quantity from the boxes?

Yes. Inserts are usually ordered to match the box quantity, but they can be ordered on their own for boxes you already have. Send the inside box size and the product sizes.

How long do inserts take?

Production takes 4–7 working days after proof approval, and free tracked delivery to the UK mainland takes 2–3 working days.
