Custom Corrugated Box Dividers

from £0.25 a dividerPriced per job · low minimums

Custom corrugated box dividers are slotted partitions that slide together into a grid of cells, giving each bottle, jar or candle its own space inside a shipping carton. They stop glass knocking against glass, which is the most common cause of breakages for drinks and candle shippers.

Why Glass Needs Its Own Cell

Bottles and jars rarely break from a single drop. They break because they knock against each other again and again on the journey: in the van, on the sorting belt, on the doorstep. Each knock is small, but glass touching glass is fragile, and eventually one chips or cracks. Once one breaks, liquid soaks the carton and damages everything else inside.

Corrugated box dividers stop that contact completely. Each item sits in its own cell, surrounded by board on every side. The board absorbs vibration and spreads impacts, so the glass never touches anything harder than corrugated card.

Dividers also make packing faster and more consistent. Staff place one item in each cell, close the carton and move on. There is no guessing how much loose fill to add, no wrapping each bottle and no variation between packers.

Returns are expensive, and broken glass returns are the worst kind. Beyond the refund or replacement, there is the cost of postage both ways, staff time dealing with the complaint and the risk of a disappointed customer not ordering again. Spending a little on dividers usually costs far less than a handful of breakages. Very fragile items sometimes need the full support of cut foam inserts for fragile products rather than a grid.

How Corrugated Box Dividers Fit Together

A divider set is made from strips of corrugated board with slots cut halfway through. The long strips and short strips slot together at right angles to form a grid. The finished grid drops into the carton and creates a set number of cells.

The strips can be made full height, so they reach the carton's flaps, or partial height for shorter items. Some sets include a pad for the base and top to cushion items from above and below.

Because the strips arrive flat, a large quantity of divider sets takes up very little room in a packing area. Assembly takes seconds once staff have done it a few times, and sets can be made up in advance before a busy dispatch day. Lighter versions of the same grid are covered under chipboard dividers for small jars.

Measuring for a Correct Fit

Dividers only work if they fit both the product and the carton. Measure the widest point of your bottle or jar, usually the shoulder or base, and the height. Then measure the inside of the carton. We use those figures to set the cell size and strip height, allowing a little clearance so items slide in easily without rattling.

If you already have shipping cartons, send us the internal dimensions and we make dividers to suit. If you are ordering cartons too, we can design both together so the fit is exact.

Mixed products in one box, such as a bottle with two small jars, need a custom grid with different cell sizes. We can draw this up from a sketch or a sample.

Check how the bottle will be lifted out too. If cells are a tight fit, customers can struggle to pull out a bottle with a narrow neck. A finger notch cut into the top of one strip, or a slightly larger cell, makes unpacking easier without allowing movement.

Bottles with labels on the shoulder or neck tags need a little more clearance, so mention any extras that sit outside the glass when you send measurements. A tight cell can scuff a paper label as the bottle slides in. Our guide to measuring for a box explains how to allow for labels and caps.

Board Grades and Strength

Most dividers use single wall corrugated board in E or B flute. E flute is thinner and suits smaller jars and candles. B flute is thicker and better for heavy glass bottles. For very heavy items, double wall board gives extra stiffness.

Kraft brown is the standard colour. White board is available if the dividers will be seen when the box is opened, for example in gift boxes.

Dividers can also be printed, though most are left plain. A small logo or a 'this way up' mark helps when the dividers double as presentation in a gift carton.

Humidity affects corrugated board, so if your cartons sit in a cold warehouse or travel in winter, a slightly heavier grade helps the dividers keep their shape and grip on the bottles.

Who Uses Divider Sets

Wineries and wine merchants, craft breweries and distilleries, candle makers, preserve and chutney producers, cosmetic brands shipping glass jars, olive oil and sauce makers, and subscription box companies sending bottles all use corrugated dividers.

Warehouses also use them for storage, keeping small parts or stock separated on shelves, and removal firms use larger dividers for packing glassware.

Laboratory and pharmacy suppliers use small-cell grids for vials and sample bottles, while hobby retailers use them to keep paint pots, inks and small craft supplies upright and organised in transit. Where the divider must fold up with the carton, the folding carton inserts for one-piece boxes suit better.

Dividers for Gift and Retail Packaging

Not all dividers are hidden in shipping cartons. Gift boxes for wine, gin or candles often use dividers that are seen when the lid opens, so a clean white or printed board makes a difference. A neat grid holding three bottles side by side looks organised and premium.

For retail, dividers can turn a carton into a display. Remove the lid, and a twelve-cell box of jars sits on a shelf ready to sell.

Subscription boxes benefit in a similar way. A monthly box of three craft beers or two candles looks neat and intentional when each item sits in its own cell, rather than rolling about in shredded paper.

Measure the Carton's Inside Before the Bottles

Dividers are cut to the inside of a carton, not the outside, so the first measurement is the internal length, width and height of the box the grid will sit in. Then measure the bottle at its widest point, including any label or foil, and the overall height. The cell size falls between the two: wide enough that a bottle slides in without scuffing the label, tight enough that it cannot rock. If you already have cartons, send a sample and we work from that.

Email the carton and product dimensions, the number of cells and the quantity, and a custom quote comes by email within one working day with low minimums quoted per job. The free proof shows the strip layout and the cell sizes. Dividers are cut in 4 to 7 working days after approval and sent flat on free tracked UK mainland delivery in 2 to 3 working days; any that arrive damaged or wrongly cut are reprinted or refunded if reported within 10 days. We keep the layout on file for reorders, and gift packs that need a single partition rather than a grid use the simpler single box partitions for two items.

Corrugated Box Dividers Questions

What buyers ask before ordering corrugated box dividers.

How do corrugated dividers stop breakages?

Each item sits in its own cell so glass never touches glass. The board absorbs vibration and spreads impacts.

Can you make dividers to fit my existing cartons?

Yes, send the internal carton dimensions and your product size, and we make dividers to suit.

Which flute grade suits a twelve-bottle wine divider?

B flute for 75 cl wine and spirit bottles, because the extra wall thickness takes the weight of twelve full bottles without the strips buckling. E flute is enough for jam jars and candles, and very heavy items move up to double wall.

Can one carton hold different sized items?

Yes, we can design a custom grid with different cell sizes for mixed products.

Do dividers need to be full height?

Full height suits tall bottles. Shorter items can use partial height dividers, which use less board.

Can I add pads above and below the bottles?

Yes, base and top pads cushion items from above and below, which helps with heavy or fragile glass.

Is there any point printing a divider that sits inside a shipping box?

Only when the box is opened by the customer, as with a gift case or a subscription pack. A logo or a handling note on the top edge of the strips is visible as soon as the lid lifts, and most plain shipping grids are left unprinted.

Do you supply matching cartons?

Yes, we can make shipping cartons and dividers together so the fit is exact.

Are white dividers available for gift boxes?

Yes, white-lined board looks cleaner in gift boxes where the dividers are on show.

How are the dividers delivered?

They arrive flat in bundles, ready to slot together. Free tracked UK mainland delivery takes 2 to 3 working days after production.
