What a Divider Actually Does

Put six glass jars loose in a box and they will find each other the moment the box is moved. Even with void fill, they shift, clink and occasionally crack. A set of chipboard dividers stops that by turning one open space into a grid of separate cells. Each item sits upright in its own pocket, the walls take the knocks, and the box can be handled, stacked and posted with far less risk.

Dividers also make packing quicker. Staff can see at a glance whether a box is full, and pick-and-pack teams stop wasting time arranging bubble wrap. For retail, a neat grid makes an assortment box look organised the moment the lid comes off. For boxes that need cushioning as well as separation, cut foam inserts are the next step up.

Chipboard Versus Corrugated Partitions

Chipboard is a dense, flat board made from compressed paper fibre, usually grey on both sides. It is thinner than corrugated board, so dividers take up less of the box and leave more room for the product. It is stiff enough to hold its shape for jars, cosmetics bottles, candles, vials, spare parts and stationery, and it slots together cleanly with tight joints.

Corrugated dividers are thicker and cushion better, which makes them the better pick for heavy wine bottles or large glass items on long journeys. If your products are small to medium weight, chipboard gives a neater fit, a smarter look and a smaller box overall. If you are unsure, tell us the item and its weight and we will advise which to use. You can see the thicker option on our corrugated box dividers for heavier items page.

  • Chipboard: thin, rigid, neat, good for jars, bottles under a litre, cosmetics and parts
  • Corrugated: thicker, more cushioning, better for heavy glass and rough handling
  • Both: slot-together grids, delivered flat, assembled in seconds

Planning a Chipboard Divider Layout

Start with the inside dimensions of your box, measured wall to wall and from the base to the underside of the lid. Then measure your product at its widest point, including any cap, pump or label overhang. Decide how many items go across and how many go deep: a two by three grid for six jars, a three by four for twelve vials and so on. We calculate each cell so the item slides in with a little clearance but cannot tip.

Height matters too. Dividers usually run to around two thirds or three quarters of the product height. That supports the item while leaving enough of it exposed for fingers to lift it out. For tall, narrow bottles we can run the dividers almost to the top so the necks never touch.

If your box is an unusual shape or holds mixed products, such as a gift set with one large bottle and four small ones, we can design an uneven grid with different cell sizes. Send a sketch or a photo of the arrangement and we will draw the dieline.

Plain Grey or Printed Board

Most chipboard dividers are left plain grey, because they live inside a shipping carton and nobody sees them. For retail gift boxes where the customer lifts the lid and looks straight at the grid, you can choose a white-lined chipboard or a printed surface. Printing your brand colour on the dividers, or a small logo on the top edge of each strip, makes an assortment box look finished rather than functional.

Black chipboard is another option. It looks smart under candles, perfume bottles and dark-coloured cosmetics, and it hides small scuffs from packing. Ask for it with your quote and we will price it alongside the standard grey.

Where Chipboard Dividers Get Used

Preserve makers and honey producers use them for gift boxes of jars. Candle brands use them to separate glass votives in multi-packs. Cosmetics and skincare companies slot them into subscription boxes so small bottles stay upright. Laboratories and pharmacies use them for vials. Hardware and electronics suppliers use them to separate small parts, fixings and components in a single carton. Craft beer and cider makers use a chipboard grid for smaller bottles and cans when a corrugated grid would be overkill.

We also make dividers for customers who already have their boxes. If you buy stock cartons from elsewhere and only need the inserts, send us the internal size and we will make dividers to fit. Kraft cartons can take kraft dividers that match the box for a tidy, uniform look.

Speeding Up the Packing Bench

Dividers earn their cost on the packing bench as much as in transit. When each box arrives with a grid already in place, packers simply drop products into empty cells; there is no wrapping each jar, no guessing how much paper to stuff in the gaps and no repacking when the lid will not close. For businesses packing dozens of gift boxes a day, that saved time adds up quickly, and the boxes look identical every time, which matters when a customer orders several to give away.

To get the most out of them, assemble a batch of grids before a busy packing session and keep them stacked by the bench. Some customers ask us to add a base pad of the same chipboard under the grid, which lifts products slightly and stops the bottom edges of the dividers marking soft labels. A matching top pad pressed down under the lid holds everything firmly and gives a clean surface for a printed card or note.

If you change products often, consider a slightly generous cell size that suits several jar or bottle shapes. One divider design that fits your whole range is easier to stock than a different grid for every item. Some packers add crinkle paper fill over the grid so the gift looks full when it is opened.

Ordering Dividers That Fit First Time

Send us your box's internal dimensions, product dimensions, the grid you want and the quantity. If you are also ordering boxes from us, we design the box and dividers together so they match exactly. We reply with a custom quote by email within one working day; minimums are low and quoted per job, and simple dividers start from £0.25 per set depending on grid and size.

Before production we send a free proof showing the divider strips flat with their slot positions and the assembled grid. If you can, test the dimensions against a real product and box at this stage. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval, and dividers ship flat with free tracked UK mainland delivery in 2 to 3 working days.

Check a few sets on arrival by assembling them in your box. If any are cut incorrectly or damaged, send photos within 10 days and we will reprint or refund them. Dividers are priced in the same way as our boxes; the pricing guide explains the factors.

Chipboard Dividers Questions

What buyers ask before ordering chipboard dividers.

What is the difference between chipboard and cardboard dividers?

Chipboard is a thin, dense, flat board, while most cardboard dividers are corrugated with a fluted middle. Chipboard is neater and takes less space; corrugated cushions more for heavy glass.

How do I measure for chipboard dividers?

Measure the inside of your box wall to wall and up to the lid, and measure your product at its widest point. Tell us the grid you want and we work out each cell size.

How tall should the dividers be?

Usually two thirds to three quarters of the product height, so items stay upright but are easy to lift out. Tall bottles can have dividers almost to the top.

Can I order dividers without boxes?

Yes. Send us the internal size of the boxes you already use and we will make dividers to fit them.

Can cells be different sizes in one grid?

Yes. We can design uneven grids for gift sets that mix one large item with several smaller ones. A sketch or photo helps us draw it.

Can chipboard dividers be printed?

Yes. White-lined chipboard takes one colour or full colour print, and a logo can be printed on the strip edges so it shows when the lid opens.

Are chipboard dividers strong enough for glass bottles?

For small and medium bottles, yes. For heavy wine bottles or long courier journeys, corrugated dividers give more cushioning and we may suggest those instead.

Do dividers arrive assembled?

No, they arrive flat as slotted strips, which saves space. They slot together in a few seconds.

Can you design the box and dividers together?

Yes, and it is the most reliable way to get a perfect fit. We draw both on the same proof so you can check the assembled layout.

What if the dividers do not fit my box?

If we cut them wrong against the approved proof, or they arrive damaged, send photos within 10 days and we will reprint or refund them.

Do you offer black chipboard?

Yes. Black chipboard suits candles, perfume and premium cosmetics. Ask for it with your quote.
