Let the Product Make the Case

Some products sell themselves the moment they are seen: biscuits, cakes, soaps, toys, socks, candles in a pretty jar. A window box puts that product in view while still giving you printed panels for the brand, the name and the details. Buyers can check the colour or the size without opening anything.

The window is cut by the same die that cuts the box, so it can be a rectangle, a circle, an arch or a shape that echoes your logo. Most windows are covered from inside with a clear film, which keeps out dust and fingerprints. For dry goods that need airflow, the window can be left open.

Products That Suit a Window

  • Cakes, biscuits and sweet treats
  • Soaps, bath products and candles
  • Toys, socks and small clothing
  • Gift sets that look good on display

Placing the Window

Put the window where the most attractive part of the product sits, and keep it away from folds and edges so the box stays strong. The free design proof shows the window on the flat layout. For bakery treats and other shelf products, also see custom retail boxes.

Window Shapes and Films

The window can be almost any shape, and it can be open or lined with clear film:

Window typeWhat it doesGood for
Film-linedClear film glued behind the cut-outFood, cosmetics, anything kept clean
OpenNo film, product can be touchedSoaps, textiles, things to feel
ShapedWindow cut to a logo or outlineBrands that want the window to be the design
Wrap-aroundWindow across a corner or two panelsShowing a product from two sides

Bakeries often use a film-lined lid so the cake is seen but kept clean. See bakery boxes with a clear window for food styles.

Placing the Window

A window that is too large weakens the box and leaves little room for print. A smaller window placed well often sells the product better.

  1. Put the product in position on a sheet of paper and trace its outline.
  2. Decide which part the buyer should see: the label, the colour or the whole item.
  3. Keep the window at least 10 mm from folds and edges so the panel stays strong.
  4. Leave enough solid board for the brand, product name and barcode.
  5. Check the window position on the free design proof against your product size.

Card, Corrugated or Rigid

Most window boxes are folding card, which is light and prints sharply around the cut-out. E flute corrugated window boxes post better and suit heavier products such as candles in jars. Rigid boxes can take a filmed window in the lid for premium gifts.

Think about how the box is handled. A window on the front panel suits shelf display; a window on the lid suits boxes that are stacked. For products sold from a counter, compare retail boxes printed for the shelf.

Window Boxes Questions

What customers ask before ordering window boxes.

Can the window be cut to any shape?

Yes. Rectangles, circles, arches and custom shapes can all be cut. The proof shows the exact shape and position.

Is the window covered?

Usually, with a clear film fixed inside the box. It can be left open if the product needs airflow.

Are window boxes suitable for food?

They are widely used for cakes, biscuits and sweets, typically with the food wrapped or on a liner. Let us know what the product is and we will advise.

Does a window weaken the box?

Slightly, which is why we keep windows away from folds and edges. A card insert can add support.

Can rigid boxes have a window?

Yes. A rigid lid can take a filmed window, which suits premium gifts where the product is worth seeing before the lid lifts.

Can I have more than one window?

Yes. Windows can be cut on more than one panel if the design calls for it.

Do window boxes come flat?

Card and corrugated window boxes arrive flat with the film already glued in place. Rigid window boxes arrive built.

Can a window box take an insert?

Yes. An insert keeps the product in position behind the window. See custom box inserts.

Does a window add much to the price?

A window adds a cutting and film step, so it adds a little to the cost of each box. The custom quote shows the price with and without film if you want to compare.

How long do window boxes take?

Production takes 4–7 working days after proof approval and free tracked delivery to the UK mainland takes 2–3 working days.
