One Product, One Box

A product box has one job: to hold a single item and tell the buyer what it is. That is usually a folding carton, a sheet of smooth card printed, cut, creased and glued so it ships flat and folds into a box with a tuck at each end. It is the packaging you see around serums, supplements, candles, phone accessories and toys.

Card is lighter than corrugated and takes very fine print, so small text, ingredients lists and barcodes stay sharp. White card gives the brightest colour. Kraft card gives a natural, matt look that suits handmade and natural products. Either can be finished with lamination, foil or spot UV to stand out next to other brands.

Common Uses

  • Skincare, haircare and cosmetics in bottles, jars and tubes
  • Supplements, teas and wellbeing products
  • Small electronics, chargers and accessories
  • Candles, diffusers and home fragrance

Fitting the Product

Measure the product at its widest points and give us the inside size in mm. For bottles and jars, a card insert keeps them upright and stops them rattling. If the product needs to be seen without opening, a die-cut window does the job: see custom window boxes.

Planning the Panels

A product box usually has six printed panels, and each one has a job. Planning them before artwork starts saves changes at proof stage:

PanelUsual content
FrontBrand, product name and the main image
BackDescription, directions or ingredients, barcode
SidesVariant name, size or weight, a short benefit line
Top and bottom tucksLogo or product name, batch or best-before space
InsideAn optional message or pattern for the opening

If your product carries legal wording, such as ingredients, warnings or an address, send it with your artwork and we leave enough space for it at a readable size.

Closures for Different Products

How a product box closes affects how fast it packs and how heavy a product it can hold:

  • Straight tuck end: both flaps tuck from the back, keeping the front panel clean
  • Reverse tuck end: flaps tuck from opposite sides, a common economical layout
  • Crash-lock base: the base locks as the box opens, for heavier or faster packing
  • Lid and base: a separate lid for premium products and gift sets
  • Hang tab: an extra panel with a euro slot for pegboard display

The straight and reverse tuck end boxes page compares the two tuck layouts in more detail.

Running a Range of Products

Most brands sell more than one product, and product boxes make it easy to keep a range consistent. Using the same structure and layout across sizes, with a colour band or variant name changing on each, makes every box recognisable on the shelf while each product is easy to pick out.

Several designs can share one size, and the proof shows each one. When your product range grows, a new size can be added to the next order without changing the look. For glass bottles and jars, add a card insert so the product does not rattle in the carton.

Tuck ends at top and bottom make product boxes quick to fill.

Product Boxes Questions

What customers ask before ordering product boxes.

What is the difference between a product box and a retail box?

They overlap a lot. We use product box for a carton built around one item, and retail box for any box made to look good on a shop shelf, which can include display and window styles.

Can you print a barcode on my box?

Yes. Send the barcode as part of your artwork or send the number and we place it on the layout. Card holds barcodes crisply at small sizes.

What card thickness do you use?

We choose the card weight for the size and weight of the product. Light items use thinner card; taller or heavier ones use a thicker board. The quote states what we have allowed.

Can product boxes go in the post on their own?

Folding carton is not designed to travel alone. Most customers pack product boxes inside a mailer or shipping box. If the product box must post on its own, we will suggest E flute.

Do you make boxes for bottles?

Yes. Bottle boxes are one of the most common product boxes. Add a card insert to keep the bottle upright.

Can I have a hanging tab?

Yes. A hang tab with a euro slot can be added to the top flap for peg displays. Mention it on the quote form.

Do the boxes come glued?

Yes. Product boxes are glued on the side seam and delivered flat, ready to fold.

What is the minimum for product boxes?

Low and quoted per job. Card boxes are economical in larger runs, and the custom quote can show more than one quantity.

Can I see a proof before printing?

Yes. Every order includes a free design proof showing the flat layout with your artwork. Printing only starts once you have approved it.

How long do product boxes take?

4–7 working days for production after proof approval, then 2–3 working days for free tracked UK mainland delivery.
