Why Magnetic Closures Work

The magnetic box is a rigid box with a lid that wraps over the front and is held shut by thin magnets set into the flap and the front wall. There is no ribbon to tie and no tab to tuck, so the box opens and closes cleanly every time and stays closed on a shelf. That small detail is a large part of why these boxes feel premium.

Like all rigid boxes, magnetic boxes are made from greyboard wrapped in printed or coloured paper. The wrap can carry a full colour design or a solid colour with a foil logo. Inside, the box can be lined with a printed pattern or fitted with an insert to hold the product.

Products That Suit Magnetic Boxes

  • Beauty and skincare gift sets
  • Clothing, shirts and accessories
  • Corporate gifts and welcome packs
  • Jewellery, watches and keepsakes

Flat or Built

Standard magnetic boxes arrive built. A collapsible version folds flat for delivery and storage, then clicks into shape with magnets along the sides: useful if you have little space or ship boxes on to customers. Compare other custom rigid boxes if you prefer a lift-off lid.

How the Magnetic Closure Works

A magnetic box is a rigid box with a hinged lid. Thin magnets are set into the board under the wrap, one in the front flap of the lid and one in the front wall of the base. When the lid closes, the magnets meet through the paper and hold it shut with a gentle pull, and nothing shows on the outside.

Because the magnets sit inside the board, the wrap can be printed edge to edge, foiled or embossed over them. The closure is strong enough to keep the box shut when lifted by the base, but light enough to open with one hand.

  • No tabs, ribbons or tape needed to keep the lid closed
  • The lid can be opened and closed many times without wear
  • Hidden magnets keep the outside clean for print and foil

Magnetic Box Sizes and Depths

Magnetic boxes are made in a wide range of shapes. Some typical proportions:

ShapeTypical internal size (mm)Used for
Shallow and wide350 × 250 × 50Shirts, scarves, folded knitwear
Book style220 × 160 × 40Notebooks, small gift sets
Cube150 × 150 × 150Candles, glassware, gifts
Deep300 × 220 × 120Hampers and multi-item sets

Every box is made to your size, so treat these as starting points. Fitted foam inserts with cut-outs hold glass and electronics inside a deep box.

Built or Collapsible

Standard magnetic boxes leave production fully built. They take more storage space, but they are ready to fill straight away and have the most solid feel.

Collapsible magnetic boxes are made with folding side walls. They arrive flat, take far less room to store and post, and fold into shape in a few seconds, usually with a double-sided tape strip that locks the walls. They suit businesses sending boxes in batches or with limited space. Tell us which you need and we quote it, or compare both on the custom quote.

Magnetic Boxes Questions

What customers ask before ordering magnetic boxes.

How strong are the magnets?

Strong enough to hold the lid closed on a shelf and in a bag, while still opening easily by hand.

Do magnetic boxes fold flat?

Standard ones arrive built. Collapsible magnetic boxes fold flat and click into shape with side magnets.

Can magnetic boxes be posted?

Pack them inside a mailer or shipping box to protect the wrap. The box itself is strong.

What colours can the wrap be?

Any printed design, or a solid coloured paper. Black, white, navy and deep green with a foil logo are common choices.

Can a magnetic box have a ribbon?

Yes. A ribbon pull on the flap or a ribbon tie around the box can be added.

Can the inside of a magnetic box be printed?

Yes. The inside of the lid and the base can carry a pattern, message or care instructions.

Can you add a foam insert?

Yes. Foam, card and wrapped board inserts can be cut to hold the product. See custom box inserts.

Are magnetic boxes good for clothing?

Yes. Shallow magnetic boxes are popular for shirts, scarves and knitwear, often with tissue inside.

What is the minimum for magnetic boxes?

Low and quoted per job. The unit price falls as the quantity rises because much of the work is done by hand.

How long do magnetic boxes take?

Production takes 4–7 working days after proof approval, and free tracked delivery to the UK mainland takes 2–3 working days.
