Why People Choose Kraft

Kraft board is brown because it is left unbleached. That plain, matt surface has become a look of its own: it reads as honest, handmade and unfussy, and it suits brands that want their product, not the packaging, to do the talking. It also hides scuffs from the post better than bright white board.

We use kraft in two forms. Kraft corrugated, in E flute or B flute, makes mailers and cartons that can travel. Kraft folding carton card makes lighter product boxes, sleeves and drawer boxes for shelves and counters. Both can be printed, and both can have a white inside liner if you want a contrast when the box opens.

Popular Kraft Styles

  • Kraft mailer boxes with a 1 colour logo on the lid
  • Kraft tuck end boxes for soaps, candles and cosmetics
  • Kraft drawer boxes with a ribbon pull for gifts
  • Kraft lid and base boxes for hampers and storage

Printing on Brown Board

Ink sits on kraft rather than glowing on it, so dark colours such as black, navy, deep green and burgundy give the best result. White ink and pale colours look muted. If your design depends on bright colour, ask for a white liner or look at custom printed boxes on white board.

Getting the Best Print on Kraft

Kraft board is brown and absorbent, so ink sits into it rather than on top. That gives a soft, natural result, and a few choices make the most of it:

  • Use one or two dark inks, such as black, navy or deep green, for crisp contrast
  • Avoid pale colours and fine pastel tints, which sink into the brown
  • Add a white base layer under colour if you need brighter tones
  • Keep thin lines and small text slightly heavier than on white board
  • Consider foil for a logo: gold and copper look rich on brown

The guide comparing print and finish options shows how each finish sits on kraft.

Kraft Card or Kraft Corrugated

Kraft comes in two families, and the choice depends on whether the box travels on its own:

Kraft typeThicknessBest for
Kraft folding cardThin, smooth, no fluteShelf boxes, tuck ends, pillow boxes
Kraft E fluteAbout 1.5 mmMailers and small shipping boxes
Kraft B fluteAbout 3 mmHeavier shipping cartons
Kraft double wallTwo flutesHeavy or stacked goods

A white inner liner can be combined with a kraft outer on corrugated boards, so the box looks natural outside and bright when opened.

Where Kraft Fits a Brand

Kraft suits products with a handmade, natural or simple look: soaps, candles, coffee, baked goods, clothing basics and small-batch food. Because the board itself carries the look, a single colour logo is often all the box needs, which keeps set-up simple and short runs economical.

Kraft also hides small scuffs better than white board, which helps on boxes that travel. If you want a natural look on a box that opens like a lid, the kraft mailer box with a hinged lid is the most common starting point.

One dark colour on kraft card keeps a logo crisp.

Kraft Boxes Questions

What customers ask before ordering kraft boxes.

What is kraft board?

Kraft is paper board made without bleaching, which leaves its natural brown colour. It comes as corrugated board for boxes that travel and as thinner card for product boxes.

Which ink colours print best on kraft board?

Dark colours such as black, navy, dark green and burgundy. Pale colours and white look muted because the brown shows through the ink.

Can I have white inside a kraft box?

Yes. Kraft corrugated can have a white inner liner, which gives a clean contrast when the box opens and makes inside print brighter.

Can kraft boxes be laminated?

They can, but most customers leave kraft uncoated to keep the natural texture. Foil or embossing on the logo is a popular way to add detail.

Are kraft boxes strong enough to post?

Kraft corrugated mailers and cartons post well. Kraft folding carton is better used inside an outer box.

Can I order plain kraft boxes?

Yes. Plain kraft boxes with no print are made to size and quoted the same way.

Do you make kraft drawer boxes?

Yes. A kraft tray slides out of a kraft sleeve, often with a ribbon pull. See custom sleeve boxes for more on this style.

Will the brown colour vary?

Kraft is a natural board, so there can be slight shade differences between batches. Within one order the colour is consistent.

Can I order a short run of kraft boxes to test a design?

Yes. Minimums are set per job, and a one colour logo on kraft is one of the quickest set-ups, which makes it a good choice for a first run.

How long do kraft boxes take?

Production takes 4–7 working days after proof approval and free tracked delivery to the UK mainland takes 2–3 working days.
