Choosing a Board
Corrugated board has a fluted middle layer that gives a box crush strength, so it is the right choice for anything that travels through the post. E flute, about 1.5 mm, is the usual board for self-locking custom mailer boxes. B flute, about 3 mm, takes more weight. Double wall bonds two flutes together for heavy and stacked goods.
Folding carton is smooth card with no flute. It prints the finest detail and folds into crisp shapes, which makes it the standard for shelf packaging such as tuck end and product boxes. It is best packed inside an outer box for posting. White card gives the brightest colour; kraft card gives a natural brown look.
Rigid greyboard is thick, dense board that is built into a fixed shape and wrapped in paper. It gives luxury, magnetic and gift boxes their weight and square edges.
Choosing a Finish
Start with protection. Matt or gloss lamination guards the print against scuffs, which matters on boxes that travel. Soft touch is a laminate with a velvet feel that suits dark and premium designs. Then choose one feature finish for the detail you most want noticed: spot UV for a gloss highlight, foil for metallic shine, or embossing for a raised logo.
Print on Each Board
| Board | Print result | Good finishes |
|---|---|---|
| White E or B flute | Bright full colour, slightly softer than card | Matt or gloss lamination |
| Kraft corrugated | Best in 1 or 2 dark inks | Often left uncoated; foil on the logo |
| White folding carton | The sharpest detail and colour | Any finish |
| Kraft folding carton | Natural, matt; dark inks | Foil, embossing |
| Rigid greyboard (wrapped) | Printed wrap, full colour | Soft touch, foil, embossing, spot UV |
