Custom Keyboard Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom keyboard boxes are long, flat cartons made to hold a keyboard snugly, with room for a mouse, cable, keycap puller or wrist rest in a fitted insert. We print them for peripheral brands, mechanical keyboard makers and resellers who want packaging that protects the keys and looks the part on a shelf.

A Long Product Needs a Purpose-Made Box

A keyboard is an awkward shape to pack. It is long and fairly flat, often heavier at one end, and the keycaps and switches stand proud of the surface where they can be knocked. Put it in a generic carton and it slides from end to end with every bump, bending stabilisers and scuffing keycaps. Wrap it in bubble wrap and the unboxing feels cheap. A custom keyboard box solves both problems with an outer carton sized to the board and an insert that holds it still.

Mechanical keyboard buyers are especially particular. Many are enthusiasts who know their switches and keycap profiles, and they expect the packaging to treat the product with the same care. A well fitted box, a clean insert and a smart sleeve tell them straight away that the maker takes quality seriously.

Group buys and small batch runs are common in the mechanical keyboard world, where a maker may produce a few hundred boards of one design and then move on. Packaging for these runs needs to be good enough to match the price, yet flexible enough that a box does not become obsolete when the next design arrives. A neutral printed box with a model sticker or a numbered card inside often works better than a fully printed box per edition.

Keyboard Box Styles

Different sales channels call for different constructions. These are the ones peripheral brands ask us for most often: p0 The sleeve-over-carton option uses the same build as our printed sleeves for inner cartons.

  • Printed folding carton with a tuck end for retail shelves and peg hooks
  • Corrugated mailer box for keyboards sold online and posted direct
  • Rigid two-piece box for premium mechanical and wireless keyboards
  • Box with a printed sleeve over a plain inner carton, so one carton serves several models
  • Window box that shows the layout and backlighting through a clear panel
  • Carry box with a handle for gaming bundles and events

Inserts That Protect Keys and Switches

The insert does most of the work. A die-cut card or corrugated insert can cradle the keyboard by its edges so the keycaps never touch the lid, with separate pockets for a mouse, a coiled cable, a dongle and small accessories such as a keycap puller or spare switches. For heavier mechanical boards, a corrugated insert gives better support. For premium boxes, a moulded pulp tray or a foam insert cut to the exact outline gives a neat, finished look.

Some brands also include a dust cover or a fabric sleeve inside the box, which doubles as a travel case. If you do, tell us its thickness so we can allow for it. Any small parts should sit in a compartment of their own, not loose under the keyboard, because loose parts rattle and can scratch the case. p1 Foam cut to the outline is shown on our foam inserts page with examples for electronics.

Sizing Custom Keyboard Boxes

Keyboards come in a handful of common layouts. A full size board with a number pad is the longest. A tenkeyless board drops the number pad and is a little shorter. Compact 75 percent and 65 percent layouts are shorter still, and 60 percent boards are the smallest. Measure your board at its widest and longest points, including any feet or knobs, and its height at the tallest keycap row.

If you sell a keyboard and mouse combo, decide whether the mouse sits beside the keyboard or above it in the insert. A mouse beside the keyboard makes the box longer. A mouse above it makes the box deeper from front to back but keeps the length shorter, which can matter for retail shelves. We can mock up both layouts on the proof so you can compare. p1 The guide to measuring a product for a box covers products with raised parts.

Print, Finish and Shelf Presence

Peripheral packaging is often dark and dramatic, with black backgrounds, product photography and accents in a brand colour. Full colour printing on white board handles this well, and a matt laminate gives a smooth, modern feel. A spot gloss on the product image makes the keys look glossy and real, and a metallic foil on the logo adds a premium touch for flagship models.

On the back and sides, list the features buyers compare: switch type, layout, connectivity, backlighting, battery life and compatibility. Clear icons for wireless, Bluetooth and wired connections save space and are easier to scan than paragraphs of text. Leave space for a barcode and any compliance marks your distributor needs.

Inside the lid is a good place to speak to the buyer directly. A short welcome, a quick start diagram showing how to pair a wireless board, or a QR code linking to firmware and remapping software is genuinely useful and saves printing a separate leaflet. Keep the inside print simple and light so it does not compete with the keyboard itself when the lid is lifted. For kits sold without switches or keycaps, a clear printed note saying what is and is not included prevents confused messages from new customers. p2 Headsets sold alongside the board use the same dark print style on our headphone boxes page.

Posting Keyboards Without Damage

If you sell online, decide whether the printed retail box goes inside an outer mailer or travels as it is. A strong corrugated mailer printed with your branding can do both jobs for direct-to-customer sales, saving a layer of packaging. For marketplace and retail sales, where the retail box must arrive pristine, an outer shipper is safer. Tell us how you ship and we will suggest the right combination.

Keyboards are long, so they are prone to bending stress in transit. A box with full depth side walls and a snug insert resists flexing far better than a thin carton.

For wireless boards with a built-in battery, check your courier's rules on lithium batteries and leave room on the outer box for any handling label they require. Planning this at the design stage avoids having to cover your artwork with stickers later.

Measure to the Tallest Keycap, Not the Case

Keyboard boxes are usually sized from the case and then found to be too shallow, because the keycaps on the back row stand 20 mm or more above it, and a knob or raised feet add again. Measure the board on a flat surface from the desk to the top of the highest cap, and the length and width including feet, then list what goes in with it: mouse, cable, puller, spare switches, a sleeve.

If you sell a combo, decide whether the mouse sits beside the board or above it; beside makes the box longer, above makes it deeper, and we can draw both on the proof. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day, from £0.25 for a simple printed carton, with the minimum set per job.

The free proof shows the insert with the keyboard and accessories in position, so check the clearance above the caps before you approve. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after that and the boxes reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery. Brands that ship a mouse on its own usually order small boxes for a mouse and dongle in the same artwork.

Keyboard Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering keyboard boxes.

How do I stop the keycaps touching the lid?

Use an insert that holds the keyboard by its edges and set the box depth with clearance above the tallest keycap row. We show the clearance on the proof.

Can the box hold a mouse and cable too?

Yes. We design the insert with separate pockets for a mouse, cable, dongle and small accessories so nothing moves or scratches the board.

What size box does a tenkeyless keyboard need?

Usually around 390 x 160 mm inside, but measure your board including feet and knobs, as layouts and bezels vary. Depth is set by the tallest keycap row plus a few millimetres.

Can I use one box for several keyboard models?

Yes. A plain inner carton with a printed sleeve per model lets one box size serve several products.

Can I post the keyboard box without an outer carton?

If the keyboard box is a printed corrugated mailer, yes. A folding retail carton should travel inside an outer shipper.

Which insert is best for a heavy mechanical keyboard?

A corrugated or foam insert gives the best support for heavy boards. Moulded pulp trays also work well and look neat.

Can you add a window to show the backlighting?

Yes. A clear window shows the layout and keycaps. Backlighting is best shown with a photograph on the box, since the board is off in the box.

What should the back of a keyboard box list?

The specifications buyers compare: switch type, layout, wired or wireless connection, compatibility, backlighting and battery life, plus a barcode and any compliance marks your distributor needs. Icons for the connection types save space and read faster than text.

Do you make rigid boxes for premium keyboards?

Yes. Rigid two-piece boxes with a fitted insert give a premium unboxing for flagship models.

Can I see a sample layout of the insert before ordering?

Yes. The free design proof shows the insert layout with your keyboard and accessories in position, so you can check pockets and clearances before production begins.

How are keyboard boxes priced?

By size, style, insert and quantity. Simple printed boxes start from £0.25, and we email a custom quote within one working day.
