Custom Mug Boxes Sized to Your Mugs
Custom mug boxes protect a ceramic mug on its way to a customer and give a printed design a proper frame on the shop shelf. We make them as tuck end cartons cut to the exact diameter, height and handle of your mug, with a window option so the print on the mug can be seen without opening the box.

Why a Fitted Mug Box Beats a Generic Carton
Mugs are awkward to pack. The body is round, the handle sticks out on one side and the rim is the part most likely to chip. A loose square carton lets the mug rattle, and every knock in transit lands on the rim or the handle joint. A box built to your mug's dimensions keeps it still, and that alone prevents most breakages before you even think about inserts.
There is a presentation benefit as well. A snug box looks deliberate on a gift shop shelf, stacks neatly in rows and photographs well for online listings. Customers buying a mug as a present often want it ready to hand over, and a printed box saves them hunting for wrapping paper.
For print-on-demand mug sellers and personalised gift shops, a consistent box also keeps your packing bench simple. One style, one fold, one insert, repeated for every order, means fewer mistakes when the orders pile up. The same construction without the handle cut-out is our standard tuck end cartons cut to size.
Measuring a Mug Correctly
Measure three things: the widest point of the body, the full width including the handle, and the height from base to rim. Most standard 11oz mugs are around 82mm across the body and roughly 95mm tall, with the handle adding about 35mm. A 15oz mug is usually taller, close to 115mm, while latte mugs are taller and narrower again.
For the internal box size, take the width including the handle as one side, the body diameter plus a little clearance as the other, and the height plus a few millimetres for the tuck flap. If you plan a card insert, add its thickness on every wall. Send us a mug if you can; measuring from the real item is always more reliable than a product listing.
Some sellers prefer a square box with the handle sitting in a corner. It packs more efficiently into outer cartons and looks tidy, though it leaves a little more empty space around the body that an insert should fill.
Double-check the base too. Some mugs have a foot ring that sits wider than the lower body, and a few artisan pieces lean slightly, which can change the height you need. If you are unsure where to measure, follow our steps for measuring a mug with its handle.

Window, Insert and Handle Cut-Out Options
A window lets the mug's own design do the selling, which is useful for printed mugs where the artwork changes from batch to batch. A die-cut shape on the front panel, such as a circle or an arch, frames the mug without exposing the rim. We can add a clear film behind it to keep dust out.
Inserts hold the mug in place. A simple card cradle with a hole for the body and a slot for the handle works for retail. For postal sends, a corrugated insert or a double-wall box gives more cushioning. Some sellers use a fold-over card divider that wraps the mug from both sides and slips in with no glue. Handles that must not touch the board are held by card inserts that hold the handle.
- Die-cut window with optional clear film
- Card cradle insert with a handle slot
- Corrugated insert for postal orders
- Hang tab for peg display
- Thumb notch for easier opening
Packing Mugs for the Post
Selling online changes the brief. A retail mug box is built to look good on a shelf, but parcels get dropped, stacked and thrown into cages. If most of your mugs ship direct to customers, think of the printed box as the inner layer and plan a second line of defence around it.
The most common set-up is a fitted retail box inside a slightly larger corrugated shipper, with crumpled paper or a card wrap filling the gap. Another route is a single corrugated mug box printed on the outside, which saves on packing time and materials but gives up some of the shelf polish. For high volumes, a mailer-style box with a built-in cradle can do both jobs at once.
Whichever route you choose, run a drop test before ordering in bulk. Pack a mug as a customer would receive it, drop it from waist height onto a hard floor a few times, then check the rim and handle. It takes ten minutes and tells you far more than any specification sheet.
Board, Print and Finish for Printed Mug Boxes
Printed mug boxes for retail are usually made from folding boxboard around 350gsm, which holds a crisp fold and takes full colour print well. For heavier stoneware or postal use, E-flute corrugated board adds strength without making the box bulky. Kraft board suits handmade pottery and gives a natural brown look that pairs nicely with one-colour print.
Full colour CMYK printing handles photographs of the mug in use, patterned designs and gradients. A matt lamination gives a calm, modern finish; gloss makes bright illustrations pop. Foil on a logo or a spot UV highlight lifts gift ranges without adding much to the job.
Keep in mind that a mug box often carries practical text: capacity, care instructions such as whether it is dishwasher or microwave safe, and a barcode for retail. Leave space for those on a side panel so the front stays clean.
Mug Boxes with Logo for Gift Shops and Merch
Mug boxes with logo printing turn a plain product into branded merchandise. Football clubs, cafés selling their own mugs, museums and corporate merch teams all use them, and the box often gets kept long after the mug comes out. A simple layout with the logo on the front and a short brand line on the back usually works better than covering every panel.
If you sell several mug designs in the same shape, one box with a window and a sticker for the design name keeps stock simple. If each design deserves its own identity, print variations of the same template and we will run them together where the board and finish match.
Post a Boxed Mug to Yourself First
The cheapest test of a mug box is one parcel. Order a small first run, pack a few mugs the way your packer will, post one to your own address and see how it arrives; that tells you more than any specification sheet. Before that run, measure the mug across the body, across the widest point including the handle, and the full height, and tell us whether the handle sits inside the box footprint or in a cut-out. Decide if the box is for the shelf, with a window, or for the courier, without one. Artwork is usually a logo and a colour for the front and sides with care instructions on the base, sent as vector files; the free proof shows every panel with the handle cut-out drawn in. A custom quote comes by email within one working day, minimums are low and quoted per job, and boxes are made in 4 to 7 working days after approval with free tracked delivery on the UK mainland. Mugs that only ever travel by courier use our mug shipping boxes for couriers.

Mug Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering mug boxes.
Do I need a box for an 11oz mug or a 15oz mug?
They need different boxes because the 15oz is noticeably taller. Send both sets of measurements if you sell both and we can quote two sizes in the same order.
Will the handle fit inside a square box?
Yes, a square box can hold a mug with the handle tucked into a corner. We size it from the full width including the handle so nothing presses on the joint.
Is a window box strong enough for posting?
A window weakens one panel a little. For postal orders we suggest placing the windowed retail box inside a plain shipper, or choosing a corrugated box without a window.
Can you make an insert that holds the handle?
Yes. A card cradle with a slot for the handle stops the mug turning inside the box. It also keeps the rim off the box walls.
Which board suits handmade stoneware?
Stoneware is heavier than standard ceramic, so E-flute corrugated or a thicker kraft board is a safer choice. We can advise once we know the mug weight.
Can I print care instructions on the box?
Yes. Most sellers put dishwasher and microwave guidance on a side or back panel. We check the text size on the proof so it stays legible.
Can one box design cover several mug patterns?
A window box with a small design-name sticker works well for that. The box stays the same and only the sticker changes.
Can mug boxes be ready before a craft fair weekend?
Usually, if you plan ahead. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after you approve the proof, and free tracked delivery to the UK mainland adds 2 to 3 working days, so allow around two working weeks before the fair.
What does a mug box cost?
Simple tuck boxes start from £0.25 per unit, with the final figure depending on size, board, finish and quantity. You get a custom quote by email within one working day.
Can you make a box for two mugs?
Yes. A wider tuck box or a two-piece box with a card divider holds a pair of mugs, which suits couples' gifts and matching sets.
What if some mug boxes arrive crushed?
Send photos within 10 days of delivery. Crushed or misprinted boxes are reprinted at no charge, or refunded if you prefer.
