A Box Shaped Around an Awkward Object

Spoons are surprisingly hard to pack well. They are long and narrow, the bowl is wider and deeper than the handle, and polished metal scratches easily if it rubs against another spoon or the box wall. A generic gift box usually leaves the spoon rattling inside, or forces the maker to stuff tissue around it until it stops moving.

A box made for the spoon solves this from the start. The inside length matches the spoon with a few millimetres to spare, the width allows for the bowl, and an insert with a shaped cut-out cradles the spoon so the bowl sits in its own recess and the handle lies flat. When the lid comes off, the spoon is exactly where it should be, facing up and centred.

Styles for Single Spoons and Sets

For a single spoon, a slim two-piece box with a lift-off lid or a sliding drawer box both work beautifully. A drawer box has a pleasing reveal as the tray slides out, and it suits gifts. A lift-off lid shows the whole spoon at once, which is good for silverware where the engraving or pattern is the main feature.

Sets of spoons, such as a pair of serving spoons, a set of coffee spoons or a salad server set, need a wider box with a multi-slot insert. A book-style box with a magnetic flap gives a premium feel for heirloom sets. For craft makers who sell wooden spoons at markets, a simple tuck end carton with a window, or a kraft sleeve around the handle, keeps costs sensible while still looking finished.

Measuring Spoons for a Custom Box

Lay the spoon flat and measure three things: the full length from tip of bowl to end of handle, the widest point of the bowl, and the height from the table to the highest point, which is often the curve of the handle or the depth of the bowl. Add 3 to 5 mm to the length and width for clearance, plus the thickness of any insert walls.

For sets, lay the spoons out side by side the way you want them displayed and measure the total width including the gaps between them. If the spoons differ in length, such as a teaspoon beside a tablespoon, the box is sized to the longest spoon and the insert positions each one.

Ornate handles need a little extra thought. Apostle spoons, spoons with a decorative finial or souvenir spoons with an enamel crest on the handle are taller at the end than in the middle, so the box depth has to suit that highest point. If you are unsure, send one spoon to us and we will measure it ourselves; it is quicker than going back and forth over a few millimetres.

Inserts That Protect Polished and Carved Spoons

Silver and stainless spoons need a soft contact surface. Foam inserts covered in velvet or satin cradle the spoon and prevent scratches, and they look luxurious when the box is opened. A shaped cut-out with a small finger notch at the side of the handle lets the recipient lift the spoon out easily without touching the polished bowl.

Wooden spoons are tougher but can mark if they rub against coarse card, and oils from the finish can transfer to paper. A card insert with a smooth coated surface, or a simple paper wrap, is usually enough. For enamel or ceramic spoons, which can chip, a foam insert with a snug fit is the safer choice. Full sets go into the longer cutlery boxes with slotted inserts.

Materials and Finishes for Spoon Packaging

Rigid boxes made from greyboard wrapped in paper give the most substantial feel and are the natural choice for silverware, engraved gifts and limited editions. Folding cartons in white or kraft board are lighter and more economical for everyday cutlery ranges. Kraft suits the look of hand-carved wooden spoons, while a smooth black or navy wrap flatters polished metal.

Foil stamping a logo or a short message, such as a name or a christening date, on the lid turns the box into part of the gift. Embossing adds texture. A matt lamination keeps a clean look and resists fingerprints, which matters because people tend to handle spoon boxes closely when they are choosing a gift.

Inside the lid is a good spot for a short care note, particularly for wooden spoons that need occasional oiling or silver that should be kept away from damp. A line or two printed on the underside of the lid, or a small card slipped beneath the insert, helps the recipient look after the spoon and keeps your name with it every time they reach for the instructions.

Who Buys Custom Spoon Boxes

Silversmiths and jewellers use them for christening, anniversary and commemorative spoons, where the box is often kept for years. Woodworkers and craft makers use them to lift hand-carved spoons from a market table into a gift worth giving. Kitchenware brands use them for premium utensil ranges sold in department stores and online, and gift shops use them to package souvenir and collectable spoons.

Coffee roasters sometimes include a branded measuring spoon in a gift set, and a small fitted box keeps it neat inside a larger hamper. Restaurants and hotels occasionally order boxed spoons as branded gifts for guests or staff.

Wedding planners and favour makers also order small spoon boxes, usually for a single teaspoon or a honey dipper given to each guest. In that case the box is often tied with ribbon and finished with a printed tag, and the quantity matches the guest list exactly, so it helps to confirm numbers before the custom quote is prepared.

Spoon Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering spoon boxes.

How do I stop a silver spoon from scratching in the box?

Use a foam insert covered in velvet or satin, with a cut-out shaped to the spoon. The spoon sits still and only touches soft material.

What should I measure on a spoon?

Measure the full length, the widest part of the bowl and the height from a flat surface. Add a few millimetres for clearance and any insert walls.

Can one box hold spoons of different lengths?

Yes. The box is sized to the longest spoon and the insert holds each spoon in its own slot.

Which box style suits a christening gift?

A drawer box or a two-piece rigid box with a foil-stamped lid. A name or date foiled on the lid makes the box part of the keepsake.

Are there cheaper options for wooden spoons sold at markets?

A kraft tuck end carton with a window, or a simple printed sleeve around the handle, keeps costs down while still looking finished.

Can the spoon be removed easily from the insert?

We add a small finger notch beside the handle so it can be lifted out without touching the polished bowl.

Can I print an engraving-style message on the lid?

Foil stamping or debossing a short message on the lid gives an engraved look. Keep text short and at a readable size.

Do spoon boxes work for online orders?

Rigid and folding boxes can both be posted inside a small mailer. The insert keeps the spoon in place during transit.

Can you box a salad server set?

Yes. A wider box with a two-slot insert holds a pair of servers side by side, and a book-style box adds a premium touch.

What if the insert cut-out is the wrong shape when delivered?

If boxes made to your approved proof arrive faulty, misprinted or damaged, report it within 10 days for a reprint or refund.
