Custom Knife Boxes
Custom knife boxes keep a blade fixed in place, protect its edge and present the knife the way its maker intended, whether that is a single chef's knife or a full block set. We build long rigid and folding boxes with foam or card inserts, printed or foil stamped with your mark, for knife makers, kitchenware brands and cutlers.

What a Knife Box Has to Do
A knife box has a harder job than most product packaging. It has to stop a very sharp edge from cutting through the box, stop the blade from moving and chipping against anything hard, and keep the customer's fingers safe when they open it, which asks more of the box than a cutlery set box does. At the same time, it is usually the first thing someone sees of a knife that may have taken hours to grind and finish, so it has to look the part.
The answer is almost always an insert that holds the knife by its handle and spine, with the edge suspended in a channel or pressed into a firm material that will not be sliced by small movements. Around that insert, the outer box provides rigidity and the brand presentation.
Knives are also long and thin, which makes the box prone to bending if it is made from light board. A box that flexes in transit lets the blade shift, so the structure needs to be stiffer than a box of the same size holding something soft.
Rigid, Folding or Corrugated Construction
Rigid boxes made from thick greyboard wrapped in printed or textured paper are the premium choice. They feel substantial in the hand, they do not bend, and they can be kept as a storage case, the same build as our rigid boxes with fitted inserts. A two-piece lift-off lid, a magnetic flap or a hinged lid all suit a chef's knife or a pocket knife collector's piece.
Folding cartons in heavy boxboard suit kitchen knives sold in volume through homeware shops. They ship flat, cost less to store and can still carry a smart printed finish. A card insert with a cradle shape holds the knife in place inside.
For posting knives to customers, an E-flute corrugated mailer with an insert gives good crush protection. Many makers send a rigid presentation box inside a plain or printed corrugated shipper, so the display box arrives without scuffs.

Inserts That Hold Blades Safely
Firm foam cut to the outline of the knife is the most secure insert. The handle and spine sit snugly in the cavity, so the knife cannot move in any direction, and the edge is held clear of the box walls. Black foam looks sharp against polished steel, and a flocked surface adds a velvet finish for high-end pieces.
Card inserts are a good fit for folding cartons. A die-cut cradle, often with a tab that clips over the handle, holds the knife securely enough for shelf display and transit in an outer case. They also print well, so you can add a line drawing of the blade profile or care instructions directly on the insert.
Whatever the insert, a blade guard or edge protector sleeve adds a second layer of safety, especially for knives that will be handled in shops. We can size the cavity to allow for the guard.
Sizing Custom Knife Boxes Around the Blade
Measure the overall length from tip to the end of the handle, the widest point of the blade, usually at the heel, and the thickest point of the handle. Add enough space for the insert walls around the knife, typically 15 to 25 mm on each side for cut foam inserts, less for card.
Single knife boxes for paring and utility knives are short and narrow. Chef's and bread knives need much longer boxes, often over 350 mm. Sets with multiple knives either sit side by side in a wide box or in a stepped insert, with each knife in its own pocket.
If you also include a sharpening steel, a whetstone or a sheath, measure each and tell us how they should sit relative to the knife. Getting the full layout right at the start avoids a second round of proofs.
Branding a Knife Box
Many knife makers prefer restraint. A black or dark grey box with a blind embossed or foil stamped maker's mark looks confident and lets the steel speak. Kitchenware brands selling through shops often go for full colour artwork with a photograph of the knife in use, product details on the side panels and a barcode on the base.
Inside the lid is a good place for a short story about the steel, the grind or the maker, along with care instructions. A small printed card tucked under the insert can carry warranty details or a reminder to hand wash and dry the blade.
Texture is another way to signal quality. A rigid box wrapped in a fine linen-effect paper or a dark textured stock feels different from smooth board the moment someone picks it up. Paired with a single foil mark, it can look more expensive than a fully printed design while costing less to set up.
For kitchen shops, the side panels do much of the selling. Blade length, steel type, handle material and dishwasher guidance answer the questions customers ask most, and they save staff time on the shop floor.
Shipping Knives Responsibly
Sellers posting knives directly to customers often use couriers that require an age check on delivery. Leave a clear panel on the plain outer shipping box for any delivery label your courier needs, and keep the product description on the outer box discreet so it does not advertise the contents in transit.
Make sure the knife cannot be pulled out of its insert without opening the box properly, and use a tamper-evident seal or tape on the outer shipper. Those small steps protect both the customer and your business.
For trade orders going to retailers, pack boxed knives in an outer case with dividers, so each retail box stays square and unmarked. A box with a crushed corner is hard to sell at full price, however good the knife inside.
Measure Tip to Handle End and Tell Us the Edge Is Live
A knife box is sized from three measurements and one warning. Measure the overall length from the tip to the end of the handle, the blade at its widest point, usually the heel, and the handle at its thickest, and say if the edge is sharpened, because a live edge changes how the insert is cut so the blade sits on its spine. For a set, lay the knives out as the customer should see them and photograph them beside a ruler. Mention a sharpening steel, a guard or a cloth if they travel in the same box.
With those details, the box style, the insert type and the quantity, a custom quote comes back by email within one working day, low minimums quoted per job so a bladesmith's small batch is fine. The free design proof shows the insert layout and the artwork. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and free tracked UK mainland delivery follows in 2 to 3 working days. Report misprints or damage within 10 days for a reprint or refund. Makers who sell a block or board with their knives often add a larger cookware box in the same wrap.

Knife Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering knife boxes.
How do you stop a sharp edge cutting through the box?
The insert holds the knife by its handle and spine so the edge sits clear of the walls. Firm foam or a card cradle keeps it from moving, and a blade guard adds another layer of protection.
Is foam or card better for knife inserts?
Foam is the most secure and suits premium rigid boxes. Card cradles work well in folding cartons and can be printed with care instructions.
What length box does a 200 mm chef's knife need?
Usually around 360–380 mm overall, depending on the handle length and insert. Send us the tip-to-handle measurement and we will size it exactly.
Can you fit a sharpening steel in the same box?
Yes. Give us the steel's dimensions and we will add a pocket beside or below the knife in the insert layout.
Can a knife box have a window?
Folding cartons can have a film-lined window showing the blade. Make sure the knife is held firmly by the insert so it cannot touch the film.
How should I post knives to customers?
Put the presentation box inside an outer shipper, keep the outside discreet and leave space for any delivery label your courier needs. A tamper-evident seal adds security.
Can you emboss my maker's mark?
Yes, blind embossing or foil stamping on the lid suits a maker's mark well. Send vector artwork for the cleanest result.
Can I order boxes for a small batch of knives?
Low minimums are quoted per job, so small batches are welcome. Your custom quote arrives by email inside one working day.
Can the box hold a set of knives?
Yes, we can lay out several knives side by side or on stepped levels, each in its own cavity. Stepped levels keep a three-knife set in a narrower box, while side by side shows every blade at once when the lid lifts.
Will a foam insert keep a knife safe if the box is kept as a storage case?
Yes. Rigid boxes with a foam insert are often kept for storage, with the knife returned to its cavity after use, and the foam holds the blade clear of the walls each time. Remind customers to make sure the blade is clean and dry before it goes back in.
What if a rigid knife box arrives dented?
Report it with a photo within 10 days and we reprint or refund it. A dented rigid box can press the insert against the blade, so set it aside rather than packing a knife in it.
