Custom steam iron boxes are retail cartons built to protect a heavy, oddly shaped appliance and sell it from a crowded shelf. We make them for steam irons, travel irons and garment steamers, with inserts that hold the soleplate, cord and accessories securely.

The Packaging Challenge of an Iron

An iron is awkward to pack. It is heavy for its size, it has a pointed nose and a flat, easily scratched soleplate, a handle that sticks up, a water tank that may be fragile, and a cord that has to go somewhere. Steam generators add a separate base unit and hose. Garment steamers add a tall pole or a hand-held unit with attachments. All of that has to arrive at the customer's home undamaged after travelling through warehouses and delivery vans.

At the same time, the box has to sell the product on a shelf beside several competing irons that all look broadly similar. The customer is comparing wattage, steam output, soleplate type and features, so the box needs to show those clearly alongside an attractive product image.

Online sales add another layer. An iron bought online may travel in its retail box alone, with just a shipping label stuck on top, or inside an outer carton. If it travels alone, the retail box must be strong enough to survive the courier network without an outer layer. Telling us how your irons are sold helps us choose the right board and insert from the start. p2 Hair dryers share the same problem of a heavy body and a cord, covered on our hair dryer packaging page.

Box Constructions That Work

Most iron boxes fall into a few proven constructions: p0 Larger appliances are shown on our appliance boxes page.

  • Tuck-end carton with crash-lock base: quick to pack and strong underneath
  • Carton with carry handle: easy for shoppers to pick up from a shelf
  • Window carton: shows the iron's colour and soleplate
  • Shipper carton: a plain outer box for online orders
  • Two-piece box: suits premium irons and steam generators
  • Corrugated retail box: for heavier steam generator stations

Inserts That Hold Everything in Place

The insert does most of the protective work. A die-cut corrugated or card insert can cradle the iron on its heel, keeping the soleplate off the box walls and the nose away from the corners. A separate compartment can hold the coiled cord, measuring cup and instruction leaflet so they do not rattle against the iron.

For garment steamers, the insert usually separates the main unit from the pole sections and attachments. Steam generators need a deeper insert that holds the base station and iron side by side. Moulded pulp inserts are another option for heavy appliances, offering good shock absorption. We design the insert around your product, so a sample of the iron is the best starting point.

A well-designed insert also makes packing faster on the production line, because each part has one obvious place to go. p2 Moulded pulp options are described on our moulded pulp packaging page.

Board Strength

Small travel irons can sit in a strong folding boxboard carton, but most full-size irons need corrugated board. E-flute gives a smooth printing surface and good strength for standard steam irons, while B-flute or double wall board suits heavy steam generators and boxes that will be stacked high in warehouses.

For retail boxes that need sharp photography, a printed litho sheet laminated onto corrugated board gives the best image quality with corrugated strength underneath. This is the usual approach for appliance packaging that sits on a supermarket or department store shelf.

Stacking strength matters more than many brands expect. Appliance boxes are often stored on pallets several layers high, and a box that bows under the weight of those above it can crush its contents or arrive looking battered on the shop floor. Choosing the right flute and board grade for your product weight and your stacking height avoids that problem, and it is worth discussing both when you ask for your custom quote.

What to Show on the Box

Shoppers want to compare features quickly, so plan the panels carefully. The front should carry a clear product photo, the brand and the model name, plus two or three headline features such as wattage, steam output or soleplate type. Side panels can carry feature icons and a short list of what is in the box. The back is the place for detailed features, a lifestyle image and any technical information.

Keep the most important features in the same position across your whole range, so a shopper comparing your basic and premium models can see the difference at a glance. Space for barcodes, safety markings and multilingual text should be planned from the start rather than squeezed in at the end. p1 Panel planning for comparison shopping is the same on our cookware boxes page.

Finishes for Appliance Packaging

Gloss lamination makes product photography vivid and protects the box from scuffs in transit and on the shelf. Matt lamination gives a more premium, understated look and suits higher-end brands, often with a spot UV highlight on the product image. Foil on the logo can lift a premium model above the rest of the range.

Handles, either die-cut into the top flaps or added as a plastic clip handle, make heavier boxes easier to carry out of a shop, which matters for steam generators in particular.

Consider the unboxing too. A tear strip on the top flaps or a clear opening point makes the box easy to open without a knife, which protects the product inside from accidental cuts. Printing a short set-up guide on the inside of the lid, such as how to fill the water tank before first use, is a small touch that reduces calls to your customer service team.

For gift-led ranges, such as compact travel irons or premium steamers, a slightly richer finish and a cleaner front panel can position the product as something worth giving rather than a purely practical purchase. A matt finish with a single foil accent on the brand name is often enough to make that shift without adding much cost to each box. p3 Spot UV and foil are compared in the guide to print and finish options.

Say Whether the Retail Box Travels Alone

An iron box is specified by its journey. One that sits inside an outer carton on a pallet can be folding board with a litho sheet; one that goes to an online customer with a label stuck on the lid has to be corrugated and its insert has to take a drop on its own. Tell us which, then send a sample iron or its dimensions with the cord, cup and leaflet, and the packed weight.

Decide the three headline features for the front and keep them in the same place across the range so shoppers compare models at a glance. Leave space for barcodes and multilingual text from the start. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day with the minimum set per job, so a new appliance brand can run a first model short.

The free proof shows every panel and the insert with the iron on its heel. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the flat boxes reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery. Brands with a kettle or toaster in the range usually add our toaster boxes in the same layout so the shelf reads as one family.

Steam Iron Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering steam iron boxes.

How do you protect the iron's soleplate?

A die-cut insert cradles the iron on its heel so the soleplate stays off the box walls and cannot be scratched in transit. A poly sleeve over the soleplate adds a second layer.

Where does the cord go?

We can design a separate compartment in the insert for the coiled cord, measuring cup and leaflet. Coil the cord the same way every time so it fits.

Which board is best for a steam generator?

Heavier steam generators need B-flute or double wall corrugated board, often with a moulded pulp or corrugated insert. Send the packed weight and we specify the grade.

Can we get photo-quality print on a corrugated box?

Yes. A litho-printed sheet laminated onto corrugated board gives sharp photography with corrugated strength.

Can the box have a carry handle?

We can add a die-cut handle in the top flaps or a clip handle, which helps shoppers carry heavier boxes. Die-cut handles are reinforced on corrugated boxes.

Do you make boxes for upright garment steamers?

Yes. Tall boxes with inserts separate the base unit from the pole sections and attachments.

Can we add a window to show the iron?

A window can show the iron's colour and design. We position it so the insert still protects the product.

Can you design inserts from a product sample?

A sample is the best starting point. We design the insert around the real product so it fits first time.

Do you leave space for barcodes and safety markings?

Yes. We plan panels for barcodes, markings and multilingual text from the start.

Can we keep one layout across our whole iron range?

We recommend it. Keeping features in the same position makes it easy for shoppers to compare models.

How long does an order take?

The make time is 4–7 working days counted from proof approval, and free tracked shipping to the UK mainland takes another 2–3 working days. Allow extra time if a retailer must approve the artwork.
