Why Sandwich Shops Wrap in Paper

Paper is quick. A skilled member of staff can wrap a sub in a few seconds, fold the ends and tuck it into a bag, which is faster than boxing it. Paper also adapts to the sandwich: a slim bagel, a fat club sandwich and a long baguette all wrap in the same sheet with a slightly different fold.

Paper holds a sandwich together while it is eaten. Customers peel the paper back bit by bit and hold the rest, keeping fingers clean and fillings in place. For hot sandwiches and toasties, paper lets a little steam escape so bread stays toasted rather than sweaty.

Plain paper does all this. Printed paper does it while putting your logo in front of the customer at lunchtime, and in front of anyone sitting near them.

Paper also suits the way sandwiches are bought. Office workers often collect lunch for colleagues, and a bag of wrapped sandwiches is light, flat and easy to carry. Boxes take more space in a bag and on a desk, while a wrapped sandwich can be eaten at the desk with the paper acting as a plate. Burger bars doing the same job use the printed burger wrapping paper in a smaller square.

Greaseproof, Deli and Kraft Papers

Greaseproof paper resists oil and moisture from fillings such as mayonnaise, dressings, cured meats and melted cheese. It keeps the outside of the wrap clean and the print sharp. It is the standard choice for most sandwich shops.

Lighter deli paper is thinner and more flexible, which suits fast wrapping and cold sandwiches. Brown kraft-style greaseproof gives a natural, artisan look, popular with bakeries and independent delis. For grilled and toasted sandwiches, a slightly heavier sheet holds heat and stands up to the warmth without tearing.

We can supply food-contact grade sheets on request. Tell us the fillings and whether sandwiches are served hot or cold and we will suggest a weight.

Sheet Sizes for Subs, Baguettes and Wraps

Sheet size depends on what you wrap. A standard sliced-bread sandwich needs a smaller sheet than a footlong sub or a filled baguette. Too small and the ends are left open; too large and staff waste time folding excess paper.

Most shops use one or two sheet sizes. A square sheet of around 300 x 300 mm handles sandwiches, bagels and wraps. A longer sheet, such as 300 x 400 mm or 380 x 380 mm, wraps subs and baguettes. Very long baguettes may need a 300 x 500 mm sheet.

If you are unsure, wrap your three most common sandwiches in plain paper cut to different sizes and note which works best. That simple test saves money and staff time. Our guide to measuring products for packaging covers soft items that change shape.

  • Square sheets for sandwiches, bagels and wraps
  • Long sheets for subs and baguettes
  • Extra-long sheets for footlong rolls
  • Small sheets as liners for baskets and boards

Designing a Repeat Pattern

Because the paper is folded in different ways every time, a single logo in the middle may end up hidden inside the fold. A repeating pattern, with the logo appearing several times across the sheet, keeps the brand visible however the sandwich is wrapped.

Simple, bold patterns print best on greaseproof paper. One or two colours, such as a dark logo on white or a white logo on kraft, look clean and keep costs down. A playful pattern of sandwich ingredients, a checked design or a typographic repeat of your name are all popular approaches.

Leave enough space between elements that the paper still looks light rather than cluttered. Our free design proof shows the pattern at full sheet size, so you can judge the spacing.

Think about the colour of your fillings, too. A bright red pattern next to a tomato and mozzarella sandwich can look busy, while a dark green or navy pattern frames most fillings well. If your shop is known for one hero sandwich, a pattern inspired by its ingredients can be a gentle nod to regulars. One-colour and two-colour repeat patterns are compared in the print and finish options guide.

Wrapping Technique and Speed

The way staff wrap matters as much as the paper. A common method is to place the sandwich diagonally on a square sheet, fold the near corner over, roll, and tuck in the sides. Long subs are wrapped by rolling lengthways and twisting or folding the ends.

A branded sticker or label to seal the wrap, perhaps with the sandwich name, makes busy lunchtime orders easier to sort. We can print matching stickers to sit alongside the paper. For click and collect orders, a sticker with a name area is particularly useful.

Store paper flat in a dry cupboard near the wrapping station, so staff can grab a sheet without stopping.

Train new staff on one standard wrap and stick to it. Consistent wrapping makes the brand look professional, keeps sandwiches secure in delivery bags and means the pattern appears in roughly the same place each time, which is the point of printing the paper.

For hot sandwiches, wrap loosely enough to let steam out at the ends. A tightly wrapped toastie softens quickly, and customers notice the difference. Oily fillings are better on the heavier greaseproof paper for oily fillings.

Beyond Sandwiches

The same printed sheets often find other uses in a sandwich shop or deli. They line baskets for chips and pastries, wrap cookies and slices of cake, and cover serving boards for platters. Some shops use them as tray liners for eat-in customers, which adds the brand to the table.

Catering orders benefit too. Platters of wrapped sandwiches look neater and more professional when every sandwich is wrapped in the same branded paper, and it makes it easy for guests to take one each. The guide to how custom pricing works explains why one sheet size on a bigger run costs less than two.

Wrap Your Three Best Sellers in Plain Paper First

Sheet size is the decision that saves or wastes the most on wrapping paper, and it only takes ten minutes to get right. Cut plain paper to the three sizes you are considering, wrap your three best-selling sandwiches in each, and have the person who does most of the wrapping tell you which one folds without a fight. A 300 mm square covers most sandwiches and wraps; subs need the 300 x 400 mm sheet, and a footlong needs the long sheet. Order the size that wins and add a second only if the subs demand it.

Tell us the sheet size, the paper, the print colours and the quantity, and a custom quote follows by email within one working day, with minimums kept low and quoted per job and simple items from £0.25. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after you approve the proof and paper is delivered by free tracked courier to UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days; sheets that arrive misprinted or water-damaged are reprinted or refunded if reported within 10 days. Burritos and larger wraps use the bigger burrito wrapping paper in foil-lined sheets.

Sandwich Wrapping Paper Questions

What buyers ask before ordering sandwich wrapping paper.

Which paper stops mayonnaise and dressing soaking through?

Greaseproof paper resists oil and moisture, keeping the outside of the wrap clean and the print sharp.

What size sheet wraps a footlong sub?

A sheet of around 300 x 500 mm wraps most footlong subs, with enough paper to fold or twist the ends.

Will my logo be hidden in the folds?

Not with a repeat pattern. The logo appears several times across the sheet, so it is visible however the sandwich is wrapped.

Is the paper suitable for hot toasties?

Yes, a slightly heavier greaseproof sheet holds heat and lets a little steam escape so the toast stays crisp.

Can I use the paper to line baskets?

Yes, many shops use the same sheets for basket and board liners, which keeps branding consistent.

Should I choose white or kraft paper?

White shows colours brightly and looks fresh. Kraft-style paper gives a warm, artisan look popular with delis and bakeries.

Can you print stickers to seal the wraps?

Yes, matching stickers with a name or sandwich label area are a handy addition for busy lunch service.

Does paper that touches a hot toastie need to be food-contact grade?

Yes, because the paper is in direct contact with the food and the heat draws fat into the sheet. Food-contact grade paper can be supplied on request; tell us the fillings and whether they are served hot so the right stock is specified.

How quickly can a new shop get printed paper for opening day?

After proof approval, printing takes 4 to 7 working days and free tracked delivery to the UK mainland takes 2 to 3 working days, so plan for both.

What if the print is patchy on some sheets?

Report it within 10 days with a photo and we will reprint or refund the affected paper.

How many colours should the pattern use?

One or two colours print crisply on greaseproof and keep costs down. Full colour is possible but rarely needed.
