What Greaseproof Paper Does Better Than Plain Wrap

Ordinary kraft or bleached paper soaks up fat within minutes, turning see-through and soft. Greaseproof paper is made from finely beaten pulp that is pressed so tightly the fibres leave very few gaps, which means oil sits on the surface rather than wicking through. That gives a sausage roll, a doughnut or a portion of chips a clean outer layer for the walk back to the office or the bench outside.

It is also thin and pliable. You can fold it around a wrap, twist the ends of a sweet treat, or lay it flat under a pastry in a box without it springing back. Because it is light, it adds almost nothing to the weight of a takeaway order, and it stacks flat behind the counter in a small footprint.

Printed greaseproof paper turns that everyday sheet into a piece of branding the customer handles for the whole meal. A logo repeat, a short line about your shop, or a simple pattern in your house colours is seen at every bite, and it often ends up in photos posted from the table.

There is a practical side too. A wrapped item is easier to hold while walking, keeps warmth in a little longer, and gives the customer something to wipe their fingers on once the food is gone. Those small comforts are why so many counters keep a stack of sheets within reach of the till. Cold items such as cheese and cured meats use the lighter coating on our wax paper sheets for cold items.

Sheets, Bags and Rolls: Picking a Format

Most of our customers start with flat sheets because they suit the widest range of foods. Bakeries use them to line trays and wrap pastries, while burger and kebab shops fold them into a pocket around the bun. Sheets come cut to size and packed in reams, so staff can pull one at a time.

Bags make more sense when the same product goes out all day. A flat greaseproof bag slips over a croissant or a slice of tray bake in one movement, which speeds up the queue. Roll stock is used by delis and larger kitchens that cut lengths to suit each order. Brands often pair them with printed deli paper so the whole order arrives in one look.

  • Flat sheets: lining baskets and trays, wrapping sandwiches, burgers and pastries
  • Flat or block-bottom bags: doughnuts, cookies, sausage rolls, single cakes
  • Rolls: delis and production kitchens cutting their own lengths
  • Interleaving sheets: separating burger patties, cheese slices or brownies in a box

Printed Greaseproof Paper: Inks, Coverage and Layout

Greaseproof paper takes water-based inks well, and we normally print one or two colours across the sheet. A spot colour matched to your brand gives the cleanest result on this thin stock. Heavy flood coverage is possible, but lighter designs with plenty of white space tend to look sharper and keep the paper supple.

Think about how the sheet will be folded. A logo placed dead centre often disappears inside the fold of a wrap, so many shops choose an all-over repeat that shows wherever the paper creases. If you want one large mark, tell us which way the sheet will be used and we will place it on the proof where it stays visible.

White greaseproof shows colour most brightly. Natural brown greaseproof gives a rustic look that suits artisan bakers and burger joints, though light inks print more softly on it. Your free design proof shows the artwork on the stock you choose before anything goes to press. Our one colour and full colour compared guide shows how each looks on brown and white paper.

Sizing Sheets for Real Food

Measure the food, then add enough paper to fold or tuck. A burger bun of around 110 mm across needs a sheet of roughly 300 x 300 mm to wrap fully, while a sheet of 250 x 200 mm is plenty for lining a small basket of chips. For tray lining, measure the inside base of the tray and take a few millimetres off each side so the paper lies flat.

Bakeries often order two sizes: a small sheet for single items handed over the counter, and a larger one for lining the trays in the display. Keeping the range to two or three sizes keeps stock simple and lets you use the same print design on each. Burger bars usually order the squares pre-cut as burger wrapping paper cut to size.

Matching Paper Weight to the Menu

Greaseproof paper comes in a few weights, and the right one depends on what you serve. Light sheets around 30–35 gsm are thin enough to scrunch around a pastry and are the usual choice for bakery counters. Heavier sheets around 40–45 gsm feel firmer, hold a fold well around a loaded burger and resist tearing when a customer pulls at the corner.

Very wet foods, such as pulled pork with sauce or curry-topped chips, can still push moisture through any thin paper eventually. For those, a heavier sheet or a sheet inside a box or tray is the better plan. Many takeaways use printed greaseproof as a liner inside a carton, so the box takes the weight and the paper keeps the branding close to the food.

If you are unsure, ask for a small mixed sample of plain weights before you commit to printing. Wrapping your own best seller in each one is the quickest way to decide. The gsm figures are explained in our paper weights explained guide.

Bakeries, Chippies and Market Stalls

Independent bakeries are the biggest group, followed closely by fish and chip shops, burger bars and street food traders. Cafés use printed sheets under toasted sandwiches and cakes on the plate, which brightens a simple dish and saves on washing up for takeaway orders.

Market traders like greaseproof paper because it packs flat in a van and works for almost anything sold hot. Butchers and delis use it to wrap cooked meats and pies. Event caterers order short runs with an event logo for one-off occasions such as food festivals and corporate barbecues. Cafés wrapping cold sandwiches use the lighter sandwich wrapping paper for cafés.

Wrap One Portion and Watch for the Logo

Greaseproof sheets are sized by the wrap, so before ordering, take a plain sheet of the size you have in mind, wrap your most common item, a burger, a sandwich, a slice of cake, and see where the fold lands. If the centre of the sheet disappears inside the fold, the logo should sit in a corner or as a repeat pattern instead. Settle the sheet size that way, and if you also want bags, measure a filled bag. Choose the paper colour, white for bright print and brown for a natural look, and the weight by the food: heavier sheets for hot, oily items. Artwork is a vector logo or a repeat tile, and the free proof shows the sheet at full size with the repeat spacing. A custom quote comes by email within one working day, low minimums are quoted per job so a small café can test printed sheets, and production takes 4–7 working days after approval with free tracked UK mainland delivery. Faulty print reported within 10 days is reprinted or refunded. Circles for cake tins are cut as our round baking paper for tins.

Greaseproof Paper Questions

What buyers ask before ordering greaseproof paper.

Will printed greaseproof paper still resist grease?

Yes. The ink sits on the surface and does not change how the paper is made, so oil is still held back. We keep ink coverage sensible so the sheet stays thin and flexible.

Can I use greaseproof paper for hot food straight from the fryer?

It is widely used for chips, battered fish and hot pastries. For very wet or saucy food, a heavier sheet or a double wrap works better, and we can advise on weight when we quote.

Is greaseproof paper the same as baking paper?

Not quite. Baking paper usually has a silicone coating for oven use, while standard greaseproof relies on its dense fibres. We offer a silicone-coated option if you need sheets that go into the oven.

Which paper colour should I choose?

White shows inks brightly and looks clean on a plate. Natural brown suits rustic bakeries and burger bars but softens lighter colours, which the free proof will show you before printing.

How do I stop my logo hiding inside the fold?

Choose a repeat pattern, or tell us how staff fold the sheet. We will place the logo on the proof so it lands on the visible face of the wrap.

Can you make greaseproof bags as well as sheets?

Yes, flat bags and block-bottom bags are both available. Bags are quicker at a busy counter when you sell the same item all day.

Is it food-contact grade?

Food-contact grade paper is available on request. Mention the food you will wrap when you ask for a quote and we will confirm the right stock.

How small an order can a café place?

Minimums are quoted per job and are kept low, so a single shop can order a trial run. Send your size and design and the custom quote will show the options.

Can I order printed sheets in two sizes with one design?

Yes. Many bakeries print a small counter sheet and a larger tray liner from the same artwork. We scale the repeat so the pattern looks right on both.

What if some sheets arrive with print faults?

Photograph the faulty sheets and send the photos within 10 days of delivery, and we reprint or refund the affected stock. Check a few sheets from each ream when the order arrives. The file is kept so a reprint does not need a new proof.
