The Hardest-Working Sheet in a Deli

Walk behind the counter of any busy deli or sandwich shop and you will find a stack of deli paper within arm's reach. It is used dozens of times an hour: to wrap a baguette, to pick up a pastry, to interleave slices of salami so they peel apart easily, to line a tray of olives or a basket of chips. It is so ordinary that it is easy to overlook.

That ubiquity is exactly why printing it makes sense. Every sandwich wrapped in branded paper carries your name out of the shop, onto an office desk or a park bench. When a customer unwraps lunch, your logo is the first thing they see, and when they post a photo of a great sandwich, the paper is in the shot.

Branded paper also makes a small business look established. Matching paper, bags and labels show the kind of care customers associate with quality food.

Printed paper also helps staff. When a shop sells several sandwich types, a sticker on the branded wrap or a different paper colour for vegetarian options makes orders easy to tell apart at the pass and reduces mix-ups at a busy lunchtime. Many customers order these alongside our printed butcher paper, printed in the same colours.

What Deli Paper Is Used For

Deli paper is thin and flexible, with a grease-resistant surface. It is versatile enough to handle most front-of-house food jobs, with the heavier cheese paper taking over at the cheese counter:

  • Wrapping sandwiches, wraps, baguettes and paninis for takeaway.
  • Interleaving sliced meats and cheeses so slices separate cleanly.
  • Lining baskets and boards for chips, burgers and sharing platters.
  • Picking up pastries, cakes and cookies from a display cabinet.
  • Wrapping cheese wedges, pâté and other deli counter items.
  • Lining boxes and trays for catering platters.

Sizes and Formats of Custom Deli Paper

Deli paper is usually supplied as pre-cut sheets in a pack, which makes it quick to pull one sheet at a time from a dispenser or the counter. Sheet size depends on the job, and the printed food basket liners are cut to a basket rather than a sandwich. Small sheets suit pastries and interleaving; medium sheets wrap a sandwich or line a basket; large sheets wrap baguettes or line catering trays.

Measure the largest item you wrap regularly. A sheet should go around it with enough overlap to fold the ends under or twist them closed. For interleaving, a sheet just slightly larger than the slice is enough. Many businesses use two sizes: one for wrapping and one for interleaving or picking up.

If you line baskets, measure the basket's base and sides and choose a sheet that drapes over the edge a little for a neat finish.

Packing matters as much as size. Sheets supplied flat in neat packs sit in a counter dispenser or a shallow tray and come away one at a time. Interfolded packs, where each sheet is folded into the next, pop up like tissues and suit very busy counters where staff need a sheet in one quick movement with gloved hands.

Printing on Thin Paper

Deli paper is thin, so print designs need to suit the material. Repeating patterns of a small logo, an icon or a simple motif work best, because however the sheet is folded, some of the design will always show; the chequered deli paper is the classic example. A single large logo in the centre can disappear into a fold.

One or two colours are the norm. They print cleanly on thin paper, dry quickly and keep the cost reasonable. Classic choices include a black or red logo on white, or a single dark colour on natural brown paper. Leave plenty of white space; heavy ink coverage can make thin paper stiff.

Food-contact grade paper is available on request. Tell us how the paper will be used so we can recommend the right grade.

If you want the design to suit both wrapping and interleaving, keep the pattern small and evenly spaced. A tight repeat looks good on a small sheet between slices of cheese and still reads clearly as your brand when a large sheet is wrapped around a baguette.

White, Brown or Coloured

White deli paper looks clean and crisp and shows coloured print brightly. It suits modern sandwich bars and cafes with a fresh, bright look. Natural brown paper has a rustic, artisan feel that suits bakeries, butchers, cheese shops and traditional delis.

Coloured papers, such as a pale pink or green, can match a brand colour and look different from the white paper used by everyone else, as the print and finish options compared page shows.

The grease resistance comes from the paper itself, so the sheet holds up to oily fillings, dressings and cured meats without going see-through or soggy in the time it takes to eat.

Ask for a sample pack of each colour if you are choosing between them, and wrap a real sandwich in each before deciding.

Who Orders Branded Deli Paper

Our printed deli paper is used by delis, sandwich shops, cafes, bakeries, butchers, cheesemongers, burger and street food vendors, caterers, farm shops and food halls. Hotels and corporate canteens use it for grab-and-go sandwiches, and event caterers use it to line platters and boards, often with burger wrapping paper for the hot items.

Food trucks and market traders like branded paper because it does a lot of branding work in a small space, without the need for printed boxes or bags for every item.

Pubs serving sandwiches and sharing boards at lunchtime also use it to line boards and baskets, which looks smarter than plain paper and makes clearing tables quicker.

Cheesemongers and charcuterie sellers often use branded paper for every wedge and pack they sell, so a customer's fridge at home ends up full of your name.

Wrap One Sandwich in a Plain Sheet to Find the Right Size

Deli paper sizes look alike on a list and behave very differently at the counter, so test one before ordering. Take a plain sheet of about 300 x 300 mm, wrap your biggest sandwich or line your usual basket and see whether the corners meet with a fold to spare. If a baguette hangs out, step up to the 380 x 500 mm sheet; if you only interleave pastries, the 200 x 250 mm sheet is plenty. Count how many sheets a busy day uses, and say if anything oily sits on the sheet for long, since that decides the paper grade.

Send the sheet sizes, paper colour, logo and the number of sheets you get through, and a custom quote arrives by email within one working day, minimums low and quoted per job so a small cafe can start without a huge stock. A free proof shows the pattern repeat at actual size on a sheet. Printing and cutting take 4 to 7 working days after approval and free tracked delivery reaches UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days. Sandwich bars that also sell cakes often add glassine sheets for pastries to the order.

Deli Paper Questions

What buyers ask before ordering deli paper.

What is deli paper made from?

It is a thin paper with a grease-resistant surface, made to wrap and separate food without going soggy. The treatment is in the paper itself rather than a coating, so the sheet stays flexible and folds cleanly.

Can deli paper be used for cold meats?

Yes, interleaving sliced meats and cheeses is one of its main uses. A sheet between slices stops them sticking together.

Can sliced meats sit directly on the printed sheet?

Food-contact grade paper is available on request. Tell us how you use it, for interleaving, wrapping or lining, and we recommend the right grade and note it on the quote.

What design works best on deli paper?

A repeating pattern of a small logo or icon works best, because it shows however the sheet is folded. Keep the repeat spacing tight enough that one full logo lands on every wrapped item.

How many colours can be printed?

One or two colours are typical on thin paper and give the cleanest result. Heavy ink coverage can make the sheet stiff.

Should I choose white or brown paper?

White looks crisp and fresh and shows colour brightly. Brown has a rustic, artisan look that suits bakeries, butchers and traditional delis.

Can I order more than one sheet size?

Yes, many businesses order a smaller interleaving sheet and a larger wrapping sheet in the same design. Each size is quoted separately but shares the same artwork and proof.

Will grease show through the paper?

The grease-resistant surface holds up to oily fillings and dressings for the time it takes to eat, without turning see-through or soggy. Very wet items left wrapped for hours will eventually mark it, which is normal for a single-use sheet.

How soon can I have printed deli paper?

It is printed and cut in 4 to 7 working days after proof approval, then delivered free and tracked to UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days. Reorders use the approved artwork, so only a quantity is needed.

How much does custom deli paper cost?

The price depends on sheet size, paper, colours and quantity. Expect a custom quote for your deli sheets within one working day.

What if the print is faint or the sheets are damaged?

Report it within 10 days with a photo and we reprint or refund the affected paper. Damp packs can curl, so check the outer boxes for water marks when the delivery lands.
