The Sheet Under Every Burger
Walk into most pubs, diners and burger bars and the food arrives in a basket or on a tray lined with paper. That liner has a practical job: it stops grease and sauce running through a wire basket onto the table, keeps food off a surface that is washed rather than sanitised between every order, and makes clearing tables quicker because the paper goes straight into the bin. Without one, baskets need scrubbing after every use and staff spend longer at the sink.
It also has a second job that many venues overlook. A liner is in front of the customer for the whole meal. It appears in photos of the food, it sits under their hands while they eat, and it is the last thing they see when the plate is cleared. A plain white or chequered sheet does the practical work. A printed liner does the same work and keeps your name in view throughout. Venues that wrap their burgers as well usually order burger wrapping paper in the same pattern.
Greaseproof Paper and How It Behaves
Food basket liners are made from greaseproof paper, which is treated so oil sits on the surface rather than soaking straight through. That matters for chips, fried chicken, onion rings and anything coated in sauce. Standard greaseproof grades suit most menus. Heavier grades hold up better under very wet or saucy food, such as loaded fries or wings, where a thin sheet can go translucent and tear when the customer picks food off it.
White greaseproof shows colour printing clearly and looks clean. Natural brown greaseproof gives a rustic, street-food feel and hides marks well. Food-contact grade paper is available on request, and you should state the food it will hold when you ask for a quote so we can suggest the right grade. The grades are the same as on our printed fish and chip paper page, which explains the weights.
- Standard greaseproof for burgers, sandwiches and dry fried food
- Heavier greaseproof for saucy wings and loaded fries

Sizing Liners for Your Baskets
The liner should cover the base of the basket and rise up the sides, with a little overhang at the rim so it can be folded neatly or left to flare. Measure the inside length and width of the base and add twice the depth of the basket wall for each dimension, plus a small margin. Oval baskets take a rectangular sheet trimmed to fit the longest and widest points.
Many venues use more than one basket: a small one for sides, a standard basket for burgers and a large sharing platter. A sheet cut for the largest basket can be folded for smaller ones, but it looks untidy. Two or three liner sizes printed with the same design keep every plate looking deliberate.
If you are unsure, send us a photo of each basket next to a tape measure, or simply post one to us. Baskets bought from catering suppliers often have slightly sloping sides, and a sheet cut for the base alone can look skimpy once it reaches the rim. We would rather size it properly once than have your team folding and tucking every sheet during a busy Friday service. Our guide to measuring for packaging covers sloping sides and overhang.
Designs That Work Under Food
A liner is mostly covered by food, so the design should still make sense when you can only see the edges and corners. All-over patterns are popular for exactly this reason: a repeating logo, a chequerboard in your colours, a hand-drawn illustration of your menu or a map-style pattern all look good whatever part is showing. A large central logo, by contrast, disappears under the first burger.
Some venues use the liner as a menu or newsletter, printing upcoming events, a short story about the kitchen or a game for children around the border. Keep anything important near the edges. Inks are applied to one side, and the printed side normally faces down or up depending on whether food sits directly on the ink; tell us how you plan to use the sheet and we will advise. Upload the pattern through the free proof request and we will show it with the centre covered.
Printing Choices and Colours
Greaseproof paper is thin and slightly translucent, so printing on it looks different from printing on board. Strong colours with good contrast work best. Very pale tints can disappear, and large solid areas can look slightly mottled because the paper absorbs ink unevenly. One or two spot colours are the most common choice and give crisp results at a lower cost than full colour.
Black, red and dark green on white greaseproof are classic diner combinations. White ink is not normally used on brown paper, so for natural sheets choose a dark brand colour that reads clearly against the brown. We will show you the expected look on the free design proof and suggest adjustments if a colour is likely to fade into the paper. The paper and ink options page shows how colours sit on white and brown greaseproof.
Beyond Baskets: Boards, Trays and Takeaway
The same liners work on wooden serving boards, slate platters and enamel trays, where they protect the surface and make cleaning faster. Steakhouses and gastro pubs often use printed liners under sharing boards to add a branded touch without changing their crockery.
For takeaway, a liner placed in the base of a burger box or a fries tray catches grease and keeps the box looking clean. If you also use wrapping paper for burgers, matching the pattern on both creates a consistent look from counter to table to doorstep.
Delivery-only kitchens can get extra value from a liner by folding a printed sheet over the top of the food before the lid closes. It keeps chips warm, catches condensation and gives the customer a flash of your branding before they see the food itself. Lighter sheets for sandwiches and pastries are covered on our printed deli paper page.
Post Us a Basket, or a Photo Beside a Tape
Basket liners go wrong at the rim, so the most useful thing to send is the basket itself, or a photo of it beside a tape measure showing the base and the wall height. We size the sheet to cover the base, climb the sloping sides and leave a small overhang at the rim, and three sizes in one pattern cover sides, mains and sharing platters. Say which foods are saucy, because loaded fries and wings want the heavier greaseproof grade.
Keep the design as a repeat pattern or an edge border so it still reads with a burger on top. Send the basket sizes, paper colour, artwork and weekly covers, and a custom quote comes back by email within one working day, with sheets from £0.25 and minimums quoted per job. Production takes 4–7 working days after approval and the reams arrive by free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses in 2–3 working days. Misprinted or damaged sheets reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Chips served in cones rather than baskets use the same paper in our printed cone holders for fries.

Food Basket Liners Questions
What buyers ask before ordering food basket liners.
How big should a basket liner be?
Measure the inside base of the basket and add twice the wall height in each direction, plus a small overhang. That gives full coverage with a neat edge at the rim.
Will grease soak through the printed side?
Greaseproof paper holds oil on its surface for the length of a meal. Very wet or saucy food benefits from a heavier grade, which we can suggest when quoting.
Which side should face the food?
That depends on your design and how you serve. Tell us your use and we will advise on print side and paper grade for your menu.
Why do big logos not work on liners?
A single central logo is hidden by the food. All-over patterns or edge designs remain visible however the basket is filled.
Can I print on brown greaseproof?
Yes. Dark inks such as black, deep red or green show well on brown. Pale colours tend to disappear on natural paper.
Can one design come in several sizes?
Yes. Many venues order two or three sizes with the same pattern so side baskets, mains and sharing boards all match.
Can liners be used on wooden boards?
They work well on wooden boards and slates, protecting the surface and making cleaning quicker between services. Cut the sheet a little smaller than the board so the edge of the wood still shows.
Will a 300 mm liner cope with a wet pulled pork bun and slaw?
On the standard grade, for the length of a meal, yes, but slaw dressing and barbecue sauce together push it, so for that menu we suggest the heavier greaseproof. Food-contact grade paper is available on request for either weight. Tell us the dishes and we pick the grade.
How many sheets come in a ream, and how much shelf space do they need?
Sheets are cut to size and packed flat in reams of a few hundred, depending on the size and grade. A 300 x 300 mm ream is roughly 40 mm deep, so a week of covers for a busy pub sits on one shelf near the pass. We can split a run into smaller packs for several service points.
Can I print a children's game on liners?
Yes, activity borders and simple puzzles are popular in family restaurants. Keep them near the edges so they are not covered by food.
What if a batch is misprinted?
Report misprints or damage within 10 days of delivery and we will reprint or refund the affected sheets. Check a sheet from each ream against the proof when the delivery arrives.
