Small Sheet, Big Impression
In a burger bar or diner, fries often arrive in a wire basket, a metal tray or on a wooden board. Without a liner, hot oil marks the basket, salt and crumbs collect in the mesh and the presentation looks bare. A printed sheet of greaseproof paper underneath fixes all of that in one step, and it does so for a fraction of the cost of any other branded item on the table.
It is also one of the few pieces of branding a customer sees for the whole meal. While they eat, the liner is right in front of them, printed with your logo, a pattern, a short line about your food or even a game for kids. It ends up in photos of the meal, which spreads your name further than you might expect from a sheet of paper.
For takeaway, liners also line cardboard trays and boxes, keeping grease off the board and making the food look neater when the box is opened.
Burger bars, diners and chip shops are the main users, along with pubs serving food in baskets and fast-casual chains with trays. Street food traders use printed liners in boxes and boats to stand out at busy markets, and event caterers use them for festival and stadium food.
The same paper also works under fried chicken, fish, onion rings, nachos and sandwiches, so many restaurants use one liner design across their whole menu.
Greaseproof Paper and How It Behaves
Greaseproof paper is made to resist oil soaking through, which is exactly what you need under hot fries. It stays intact under chips straight from the fryer, does not turn transparent as quickly as ordinary paper and keeps baskets cleaner for longer between washes.
There are a few grades to choose from. A lighter greaseproof paper is economical and fine for quick service, where food is eaten within minutes. A heavier grade holds up better under large portions, loaded fries with sauces or meals that sit on the table for longer. Food-contact grade paper is available on request, and we will specify it on your custom quote when food sits directly on the liner.
Plain white paper gives the brightest print, while brown kraft-style greaseproof gives a rustic look that suits smokehouses, pubs and street food.

Printed Fries Paper Liners That People Notice
Because a liner is mostly covered by food, the design needs to work around the edges and peek through between chips. All-over patterns are a popular choice: repeating logos, newspaper-style prints, checks or illustrations all look good partially covered. A central logo is likely to vanish under a pile of fries, so place key branding near the edges where it stays visible.
Some restaurants use the liner as a menu or message board, printing a short story about their beef, a list of sauces or a social media handle. Family restaurants print simple puzzles or colouring for children. Whatever you choose, keep it readable at a glance; nobody reads small print under a burger.
We print with inks suited to greaseproof paper, and colours look slightly softer than on coated card. Your proof shows the design on the paper you choose. Our guide to print and finish options explains how print differs from card to paper.
Fitting Baskets, Trays and Boards
Liners come in square or rectangular sheets, and the right size depends on what you serve on. For baskets, the sheet should be large enough to line the base and come up the sides, with a little overhang at the top that frames the food. For flat trays and boards, the liner is usually cut slightly smaller than the surface so it sits neatly without hanging over.
Measure the base and the height of the sides of your baskets, or the length and width of your trays. If you use several sizes, one sheet size can often line two of them if folded slightly differently. Send us your measurements and we will suggest the most economical sheet size. Cone and basket service can be paired with our printed fries cone holders.
- Small basket or cone holder: a square sheet that folds into the basket corners.
- Standard burger basket: a larger square or rectangle that lines base and sides.
- Serving tray: a rectangle cut to sit just inside the tray edge.
- Wooden board: a smaller rectangle placed under the fries portion only.
- Takeaway box: a liner cut to the base of your box.
Designing for the Pass, Not Just the Table
Liners are handled hundreds of times a shift, so the design should help the kitchen as well as the customer. If you serve several basket sizes, a subtle corner mark or a different border colour for each liner size stops staff grabbing the wrong one in a rush. It sounds minor, but in a busy service it saves wasted sheets and keeps portions looking consistent.
Orientation matters too. A liner with a logo that only reads one way will be placed upside down half the time. All-over patterns and designs that read from any direction look right however the sheet lands in the basket, which is one reason they are so popular with high-volume diners.
Some restaurants print two versions: a standard design for everyday service and a second one for promotions, events or a new menu item. Because liners are cheap and used quickly, swapping designs is an easy way to keep regulars interested without changing any other packaging. Burger restaurants often run the same campaign on custom burger wrapping paper.
Storage and Ordering Tips
Liners come flat and stacked, ready to use, and take up little space. Store them in a dry place away from the fryer, where heat and steam can make the paper curl. A dispenser or a simple tray near the pass keeps them clean and quick to grab.
Order based on how many covers you serve, plus a margin for wastage. Because liners are used for every order, many restaurants find it easier to order regular top-ups rather than a single huge batch. Low minimums make this practical. Our guide to how pricing works explains why larger runs cost less per sheet.
How It Works

Fries Paper Liners Questions
What buyers ask before ordering fries paper liners.
Will grease soak through the liner?
Greaseproof paper resists oil, so it stays intact under hot fries. A heavier grade is better for large or saucy portions.
Where should I put my logo?
Near the edges or as an all-over pattern, because the centre is usually covered by food. That way your branding stays visible throughout the meal.
Can the same liner be used for burgers and chicken?
Yes, many restaurants use one liner design across their whole menu for fries, burgers, chicken and fish.
What size liner fits a standard burger basket?
Most standard baskets take a sheet of around 300 x 300 mm. Measure your basket base and sides to be sure.
Is the paper suitable for direct food contact?
Food-contact grade paper is available on request, and we will specify it on your custom quote.
Can I print a kids' puzzle on the liner?
Yes, simple puzzles, mazes or colouring designs are popular in family restaurants.
Do colours print as brightly as on card?
Colours look slightly softer on greaseproof paper than on coated card. Your proof shows the expected result.
Can I use brown paper for a rustic look?
Yes, brown kraft-style greaseproof suits smokehouses, pubs and street food brands.
How should I store liners in a busy kitchen?
Keep them dry and away from the fryer. A dispenser near the pass keeps them clean and easy to grab.
Can I order liners for takeaway boxes too?
Yes, we cut liners to the base of your takeaway boxes so food looks neat when opened.
What if liners arrive damaged?
Report any damage or misprint within 10 days with a photo, and we will reprint or refund.
