Custom Freezer Paper

from £0.25 a sheetPriced per job · low minimums

Custom freezer paper has a plastic-coated side that goes against the meat or fish and a plain paper side that faces out, so it holds in moisture, keeps out freezer air and gives you a surface to print your name on. Butchers, farm shops, fishmongers and home cooks who buy in bulk use it to wrap cuts that will spend weeks in the freezer.

How Freezer Paper Differs From Other Wraps

Butcher paper, greaseproof paper and freezer paper look similar on a roll, but they do different jobs. Butcher paper is breathable and suits fresh meat that will be cooked within a day or two. Greaseproof resists fats but is not made to keep out air over weeks. Freezer paper adds a thin plastic coating on one side, which acts as a moisture and air barrier and protects food from freezer burn.

Freezer burn happens when moisture escapes from the surface of frozen food and cold, dry air takes its place. The meat dries, discolours and loses flavour. Wrapping tightly in coated paper, with the coated side touching the food, slows that process right down, and the paper outer layer protects the coating from tearing when packs are stacked in a chest freezer.

The paper side has another benefit: you can write on it. Cut, weight and packing date can be marked with a pen, which is why freezer paper is still preferred over film by many butchers and households. For a matching set, the same artwork also works on our printed butcher paper.

Who Wraps With Freezer Paper

Traditional butchers use it for customers buying meat to freeze, especially for bulk orders such as half lambs, beef boxes and freezer packs. Farm shops and farms selling direct use it to wrap their own beef, pork, lamb and game, where branded paper reinforces the farm's name every time a pack is taken from the freezer.

Fishmongers wrap fillets and whole fish for freezing, and game dealers use it for venison and birds. Hunters and smallholders who process their own meat buy freezer paper in bulk, and some cooks use it for freezing baked goods, pastry and portions of cooked food.

For many of these businesses, the paper is the last thing the customer sees of them for weeks. A chest freezer full of packs printed with a farm name is a quiet reminder every time someone reaches in for dinner, and it makes reordering the obvious next step when the freezer runs low. That is a big part of why direct-selling farms invest in printed paper rather than plain stock. Counters that also wrap sandwiches and cooked meats use the lighter deli paper for counter wrapping.

Printing Custom Freezer Paper

We print on the uncoated paper side, which is the side that faces outwards once the pack is wrapped. A repeating pattern of your logo, name and perhaps a short line such as a farm address or website works best, because the pattern shows on every pack whatever size the sheet is cut to. One or two colour print is the usual choice; it keeps costs sensible and reads clearly against white or kraft paper.

Leave space for writing. Some customers print a small box in the repeat labelled for cut, weight and date, which makes it easy for staff to fill in details at the counter and for customers to find the right pack later. Water-based inks are used on the paper face, and the print stays away from the coated food-contact side.

Food-contact grade coated paper is available on request, and we will confirm the specification on your quote. One-colour print on white coated paper is compared with full colour in the print and finish options guide.

Sheets or Rolls

Freezer paper comes in two main formats. Pre-cut sheets are quick to grab at a busy counter and suit standard cuts such as steaks, chops and mince portions. Rolls on a dispenser let staff tear off exactly the length they need, which suits larger joints, whole fish and mixed packs.

Sheet sizes are usually chosen to fit the most common cuts, with one larger size for joints. Rolls come in several widths; a wider roll handles big joints in one sheet, while a narrower roll suits portions. If your counter staff do most of the wrapping, ask them which size they reach for most often before you order.

Interleaved sheets are a third option for burger patties and portioned steaks. A sheet between each piece stops them freezing into one block, so customers can take out exactly what they need. Printed interleaving is less common, but plain coated sheets can be supplied alongside your branded wrap. Our guide to how custom pricing works explains why rolls and sheets are priced differently.

Wrapping Tips for Better Freezing

Always put the coated side against the food. The paper side faces out, where it can be written on and handled. Press out as much air as possible and fold the edges tightly; the classic butcher's fold, rolling the long edges together and tucking the ends underneath, gives a neat parcel with minimal air inside.

Seal the final fold with freezer tape, which stays sticky at low temperatures where ordinary tape lets go. Mark the cut and date on the paper side before the pack goes into the freezer, because writing on frosted paper is much harder.

For fish and very moist meat, a quick wrap in film before the freezer paper adds an extra layer of protection against moisture loss, though many butchers find the coated paper alone is enough for normal storage times. For fats and pastry that only need a short time in the fridge, printed greaseproof paper for short storage is the lighter choice.

Choosing Paper Colour and Weight

White freezer paper looks clean and clinical and shows print crisply. Kraft or brown freezer paper has a more rustic look that suits farm shops and traditional butchers. Heavier papers are more resistant to tearing on sharp bones, which matters for chops, ribs and game; lighter papers are easier to fold tightly around small portions.

If you wrap a lot of bone-in cuts, mention it, and we will suggest a heavier sheet. A tear in the coating lets air in and undoes the point of using freezer paper.

Think about the look of the counter as well. Kraft paper with a dark green or burgundy logo feels traditional and suits a high street butcher, while white paper with a bold modern mark fits a newer farm brand selling online. Either way, keep the repeat bold enough that it reads after the paper has been folded around an irregular joint. Paper weights and the coating are described on the board and finish page.

Count Your Cuts Before Choosing Sheets or Rolls

Freezer paper is bought wrong more often than it is printed wrong. A butcher who wraps two hundred standard portions a day is better served by pre-cut sheets that a counter hand grabs one at a time; a farm shop boxing a mixed lamb pack with joints of every size needs a roll. Keep a tally for a week of what you wrap and at what sizes, and that tally tells you the sheet size or the roll width. Send it with the paper colour, the quantity and your logo.

A custom quote comes by email within one working day, with minimums low and quoted per job so a single farm can order branded paper without overstocking, and prices from £0.25 for small sheet packs. The free proof shows the repeat pattern before printing. Production follows approval and takes 4 to 7 working days, and free tracked UK mainland delivery gets the paper to the counter in 2 to 3 working days; packs that arrive misprinted or damaged are reprinted or refunded if reported within 10 days. Cheese that goes in the same chiller is wrapped in the two-layer cheese paper that lets the rind breathe.

Freezer Paper Questions

What buyers ask before ordering freezer paper.

Which side of freezer paper touches the meat?

The coated side always goes against the food. The plain paper side faces out, where it can be printed and written on.

Can I write on printed freezer paper?

Yes, the paper side takes ballpoint and marker well. We can include a small write-on box in the repeat for cut, weight and date.

Does the print go on the food side?

No, we print only on the uncoated outer face. The coated side that touches the food is left unprinted.

Is freezer paper the same as butcher paper?

No. Butcher paper is breathable and suits fresh meat, while freezer paper has a coating that keeps air and moisture out during freezing.

Will sharp bones tear the paper?

Lighter papers can tear on sharp bones. For chops, ribs and game we recommend a heavier coated sheet.

Should a butcher's counter order freezer paper in sheets or on a roll?

Sheets, if most of the day is standard cuts such as steaks, chops and mince, because a counter hand grabs one without reaching for a cutter. A roll suits farm shops and fishmongers wrapping joints and whole fish of every size, and many counters keep both.

Can you print our farm name and address?

Yes, a repeating logo with your farm name and a short address or website line is the most common design.

Is the paper suitable for food contact?

Food-contact grade coated paper is available on request. Mention it when you ask for a quote and we will confirm the specification.

Is there a small minimum for a single butcher?

Minimums are low and quoted per job, so a single shop or farm can order a sensible quantity.

Which tape should I use to seal packs?

Use freezer tape, which keeps its grip at low temperatures. Ordinary tape often lets go once frozen.

What if the print is faint or smudged?

Report it within 10 days with a photo and we will reprint the order or refund you.
