Custom Cheese Paper for Cheesemongers and Delis
Custom cheese paper is a breathable, coated wrap that keeps a cut wedge from drying out while letting it release moisture, so it does not sweat the way it would in cling film. We print it with your logo and cut it to the sheet sizes you use at the counter.

Why Cheese Needs Its Own Paper
Cheese is alive in a way most foods are not. Once a wheel is cut, the exposed face keeps losing and gaining moisture, and the rind keeps breathing. Wrap a wedge tightly in plastic film and the moisture has nowhere to go: the surface turns tacky, flavours dull and some cheeses pick up a plasticky taste within days. Wrap it in plain paper and it dries out and cracks. Proper cheese paper sits between the two. It holds in enough moisture to stop the cut face drying, but lets enough air through to stop it sweating.
That is why good cheesemongers use it for every cut, and why customers who have bought from one rarely go back to cling film. Printing it with your name turns a technical necessity into a piece of branding that lives in the customer's fridge for a week or two.
Paper also makes the wedge look cared for. A neatly folded parcel in printed paper, sealed with a small label, tells the customer this was cut to order by someone who knows cheese. It is the same reason a good butcher wraps meat in paper rather than dropping it in a bag: the wrapping is part of the service. Brands often pair them with printed butcher paper so the whole order arrives in one look.
How Custom Cheese Paper Is Made
Most professional cheese paper is a two-layer sheet: an outer paper layer that takes print and gives the wrap its strength, and an inner layer with a light wax or polymer coating that faces the cheese. The coating controls how much moisture passes through. Single-layer waxed papers are also available, and they suit hard cheeses and shorter storage times at a lower cost.
The paper should fold crisply around a wedge and stay folded without tape, which is a big part of how a cheesemonger works quickly at a busy counter. Food-contact grade papers and coatings are used for the inner face, and we can supply product information for your records on request. Sandwich counters use a plainer coated sheet, which we print as wax paper sheets for sandwiches.
- Two-layer coated paper: the professional choice for soft, semi-soft and blue cheeses
- Single waxed paper: economical, best for hard and aged cheeses
- Kraft outer layer: rustic look, takes one or two colour print well
- White outer layer: brighter print for full colour logos and patterns

Matching the Wrap to the Cheese
Soft cheeses such as brie and camembert style rounds release more moisture and benefit most from a two-layer coated paper that breathes steadily. Blue cheeses need breathing room too, and many cheesemongers wrap them in their own sheet so the mould does not spread to other wedges in a customer's fridge. Hard and aged cheeses like cheddar and parmesan styles are more forgiving and do well in a single waxed sheet. Goat's cheese logs and washed-rind cheeses have their own quirks, and some shops use a slightly heavier coating for them.
In practice, most counters use one main paper for everything and keep a second for blues or very soft cheeses. Two colours of print, or the same design on two papers, help staff grab the right sheet without thinking. Pastries and pies sold at the same counter use greaseproof paper for pastry counters rather than cheese paper.
Sheet Sizes for a Cheese Counter
Cheese paper is usually supplied in flat sheets because they are quicker to use than a roll and keep the counter tidy. Measure the largest wedge you routinely cut and allow enough paper to fold around it with a good overlap. A small sheet suits 100 to 200 g cuts and tasting pieces, a medium sheet handles most everyday wedges, and a large sheet covers whole small rounds and big family cuts.
If you also sell cheese boards, hampers or gift boxes, a pre-cut square sized to the box makes packing faster. Interleaving sheets for sliced cheese are another option for delis that slice to order.
Online cheese clubs posting wedges need a slightly different approach. Each piece is wrapped individually, then packed with ice packs in an insulated box. A sheet that folds snugly with little excess paper keeps the parcel compact and stops loose ends catching on the ice packs. We can suggest sizes once you tell us your typical wedge weights. Cold meats cut beside the cheese are wrapped in deli paper for cold meats, which can share the same artwork.
Printing Your Name on the Paper
A repeat pattern works best on cheese paper, because the sheet is folded and only part of it shows on the finished parcel. A diagonal repeat of your logo, a simple line drawing of a cow, goat or sheep, or a stripe with your shop name are all popular. One or two colours look classic and keep the ink coverage light, which helps the paper fold smoothly. Print goes on the outer layer only, never the coated face that touches the cheese.
Leave space for a price or product sticker if you label wedges. Many shops print a small blank panel within the repeat for that, so the label sits neatly rather than over the logo. Shops that change artwork rarely often add printed labels for the parcel to carry the variety name.
Cheesemongers, Delis and Dairies
Our cheese paper goes to specialist cheesemongers, delis with a cheese counter, farm dairies selling direct from the farm shop, farmers' market traders and online cheese clubs that post wedges in insulated boxes. Restaurants with a cheese trolley use it to store opened cheeses overnight, and caterers use it to wrap pieces for cheese tables at events. Some artisan makers wrap their own small rounds in printed paper before boxing them for retail. Dairies that also bake sell to the same shops as our round baking paper for bakeries.
Work Out Your Most Common Cut First
Cheese paper is sized by the wedge, so weigh and measure the cut you sell most, usually a 200 to 250 g piece, and let that set your main sheet size. A second, larger sheet for whole small cheeses and a smaller one for tasting pieces usually cover the rest of the counter. Decide the construction next: a single coated sheet for hard cheeses that move quickly, two-layer paper for soft and blue cheeses that need to breathe. Artwork is a repeat pattern or a logo scattered across the sheet, so send a vector file and tell us how dense you want the repeat; we show it at full size on a free proof. The quote comes by email within one working day and minimums are modest, which suits a single shop. Sheets are printed 4 to 7 working days after you approve the proof and arrive flat in boxes on free tracked UK mainland delivery. Faulty print reported within 10 days is reprinted or refunded. Papers for the rest of the deli counter are on our other food wrapping papers page.

Cheese Paper Questions
What buyers ask before ordering cheese paper.
Why not just wrap cheese in cling film?
Cling film traps moisture against the cut face, so the cheese sweats, turns tacky and can pick up a plastic taste. Cheese paper lets it breathe while stopping it drying out.
Is two-layer paper worth the extra cost?
For soft, semi-soft and blue cheeses, yes, because it manages moisture more evenly. For hard cheeses a single waxed sheet often does the job at a lower price.
Is the print on the side touching the cheese?
No. We print only the outer layer. The coated inner face that touches the cheese is left unprinted.
Should blue cheese have its own paper?
Many cheesemongers wrap blues separately so the mould does not spread in a customer's fridge. A second print colour helps staff pick the right sheet.
What sheet sizes do cheese counters use most?
A small sheet for tasting pieces, a medium one for everyday wedges and a large one for small rounds. We cut to any sizes you choose.
Does the paper stay folded without tape?
Yes. Good cheese paper creases crisply and holds its folds. A printed label or sticker can seal the parcel neatly.
Can I leave a space for price labels?
Yes. We can build a small blank panel into the repeat so your price or product label sits cleanly.
Will cheese paper pick up smells stored near a strong cheese?
It can, because the paper is designed to breathe. Keep sheets flat in their box, in a cool dry place away from the cheese fridge and from strong-smelling stock such as onions or smoked meats. Take out a day's supply at a time.
How long will a reorder of cheese paper take to reach my shop?
We keep your artwork on file. Production takes 4 to 7 working days once the proof is approved, followed by 2 to 3 working days for free tracked UK mainland delivery.
Can I get matching gift box liners?
Yes. Pre-cut squares sized to your cheese boxes or hampers can be printed in the same design.
What happens if the print is faulty?
Email photos of the faulty sheets within 10 days of delivery and we reprint or refund the affected quantity. Check a few sheets from each box when they arrive. The print file is kept so a reprint does not need a new proof.
