A Paper Built for Heavy, Wet Work

Ordinary wrapping paper tears the moment it meets a joint of beef or a pack of chops. Butcher paper is made from long-fibre kraft pulp, heavier than the deli paper used for sandwiches, which gives it real wet strength, so it can be folded tightly around a rack of lamb, taped, chilled and carried home without splitting. It is thick enough to absorb a little moisture from the meat without turning soggy, and it holds a crease well, which makes neat parcels quick to wrap during a busy Saturday rush.

In BBQ kitchens, the same paper plays a different role. Pitmasters wrap brisket, pork shoulder and ribs in unwaxed butcher paper part way through a long cook. Unlike foil, the paper lets some steam escape, so the bark stays firm while the meat keeps cooking through the stall. When the meat comes out, it often rests in the same paper before being sliced and served on a fresh sheet, which is where printed paper really earns its place on the table.

Pink, Brown or White Butcher Paper

Brown kraft is the traditional look in UK butchers and farm shops, the same tone as our kraft food wrapping paper. It has an honest, rustic feel and hides small marks from the block. Pink or peach butcher paper is the colour associated with American-style BBQ, partly because blood and juice show less against it, and it has become a recognisable signal on smokehouse menus. White butcher paper looks clean and modern, shows printing most brightly and suits delis and fine food counters that sell cured meats and charcuterie alongside fresh cuts.

All three can be printed. One or two colours of food-contact ink suit butcher paper best, because the surface is absorbent and fine full colour images soften on it. A strong, simple logo repeated across the sheet reads clearly whichever way the parcel is folded.

Sheets or Rolls for Your Counter

Most butchers and farm shops prefer pre-cut sheets stacked by the scale, because they are fast to grab and give a consistent parcel size. BBQ restaurants often prefer printed sheets cut to the size of their serving trays, much like printed food basket liners, so the paper lines the tray exactly with the logo sitting in the middle. Rolls suit kitchens that wrap large cuts in varying sizes and use a dispenser on the prep bench.

Think about how you work during the busiest hour. If staff wrap the same few cuts all day, sheets at two sizes will be quicker than a roll. If they handle whole briskets one minute and a single sausage pack the next, a roll on a cutter bar gives the flexibility they need.

  • Counter sheets for steaks, chops, mince and sausages
  • Large sheets for joints, whole birds and briskets
  • Tray liners cut to your serving trays or boards
  • Rolls for dispensers in prep kitchens

Custom Butcher Paper Printing Ideas

The simplest and most effective design is a repeating pattern of your logo, as on printed greaseproof paper, spaced so at least one full logo shows on every wrapped parcel. Some butchers add their phone number or a web address in the pattern, which turns every parcel into a reminder of where to order next time. A BBQ restaurant might include a cut chart of a cow or pig, a hashtag or a short line about their smoking style.

On tray liners you have more freedom, because the sheet is seen flat on the table. A border with your name, a central space for the food and a few lines about your wood or your suppliers make good use of the space. Keep the centre clear of heavy ink coverage, since that is where the meat and sauce will sit.

Weights and Treatments

Butcher paper comes in a range of weights, and for cuts going into the freezer the coated freezer paper with a moisture barrier is the better choice. Lighter grades are fine for wrapping small cuts and for lining trays, while heavier grades are better for big joints with bones that could poke through, and for BBQ wrapping where the paper is handled while hot and wet. For meat that will be frozen at home, ask about a coated freezer-grade paper instead, which resists moisture better over weeks in the freezer.

If you are wrapping brisket in the smoker, use unwaxed and uncoated butcher paper only. Waxed or coated papers are made for cold use and should not go into a smoker or oven. We will confirm the right grade for your use when we send your custom quote, and food-contact grade paper is available on request.

Who Orders Printed Butcher Paper

Independent butchers use printed paper to stand apart from supermarket trays and cling film, and a neatly folded paper parcel suits the feel of a traditional shop. Farm shops use it to signal that the meat came from their own herd, with a printed product label on the parcel giving the cut and weight. BBQ restaurants, street food trucks and burger joints use it as tray liners and wrapping for takeaway portions. Meat box delivery companies use it to wrap each cut inside an insulated box, which makes the delivery feel as if it came from a real counter rather than a warehouse.

Caterers and event BBQ teams are another growing group. At a wedding or a corporate barbecue, printed paper lining long serving boards gives the table a relaxed, generous look and carries the caterer's name in front of every guest. For these jobs we usually suggest wide sheets or a roll, so the paper can run the full length of a board without joins.

Match the Sheet to Your Biggest Everyday Cut

The sheet size is the decision that saves the most waste. Take the joint you wrap most often on a Saturday and wrap it in a plain sheet, then measure how much paper you actually used with the folds. That is the size to print; a sheet much bigger wastes paper on every chop, and one too small gets doubled up. BBQ kitchens should measure the inside of the serving tray instead and have liners cut to that. Then choose the weight: a lighter grade for tray liners and small cuts, a heavier one for bone-in joints and hot brisket.

Send the logo, the sheet or roll sizes and a rough monthly usage, and a custom quote arrives by email within one working day, minimums quoted per job. The free design proof shows the repeat so you can see that a full logo lands on every parcel. Printing takes 4 to 7 working days once you approve it and the bundles arrive on free tracked UK mainland delivery in 2 to 3 working days. Counters that also sell burgers and sausages often print the same pattern on smaller burger wrapping sheets so the shop looks consistent.

Butcher Paper Questions

What buyers ask before ordering butcher paper.

Can I wrap brisket in your printed butcher paper?

Yes, as long as you choose unwaxed, uncoated butcher paper, which is made to breathe in the smoker. Waxed or coated papers should be kept for cold wrapping only.

Why do BBQ restaurants use pink butcher paper?

Pink or peach paper is the colour linked with American-style BBQ, and juices show less against it than on white. It has become a recognisable part of the smokehouse look.

Will the ink rub off onto the meat?

We print with food-contact inks on the outer face. For direct contact with raw meat, many butchers wrap with the printed side out, and food-contact grade paper is available on request.

Is printed butcher paper strong enough for bone-in joints?

Choose a heavier grade for bone-in cuts and whole birds. The long-fibre kraft resists tearing when wet and holds a tight fold.

Should I order sheets or a roll?

Sheets are faster at a counter that wraps similar cuts all day. A roll on a dispenser suits kitchens that wrap many different sizes.

Can you cut tray liners to fit my trays?

Yes. Send us the inside size of your trays or boards and we cut printed liners to fit, with the logo placed where it will be seen.

How many colours can be printed on butcher paper?

One or two colours work best because the paper is absorbent. Bold logos and simple patterns stay crisp, while fine photographs soften.

Can butcher paper be used for meat that will be frozen?

Standard butcher paper is fine for a short time in the fridge. For freezing, a coated freezer-grade paper protects the meat better, and we can print that too.

Can I reorder the same paper when stock runs low?

Yes. We keep your artwork and paper choice on file, so a repeat order only needs a quantity. Allow 4 to 7 working days for production and 2 to 3 working days for free tracked delivery, and reorder before your last bundle is opened.

Can I add my phone number to the print?

Yes. A phone number or web address in the repeat pattern helps customers reorder, especially for meat boxes and special orders.

How is a 500 x 500 mm printed counter sheet priced?

By paper weight, the number of ink colours and the quantity, with one colour on brown kraft the most economical. Larger sheets and rolls are priced the same way. Send the size and a monthly usage figure and we email a custom quote within one working day.
