Custom Transfer Stickers

from £0.25 a stickerPriced per job · low minimums

Custom transfer stickers are cut vinyl lettering and logos supplied on a carrier tape, so only the design itself is left on the surface with no background or border. Shops, salons, offices and van fleets use them for clean, painted-on looking graphics on glass, vehicles and smooth walls.

What Sets a Transfer Sticker Apart

A normal sticker is a printed shape with a background, so even a clear sticker leaves a visible edge. A transfer sticker is different from a printed vinyl sticker. The design is cut from coloured vinyl, the waste around each letter is removed, and the remaining pieces are held in place by a sheet of application tape. You press the tape onto the surface, rub it down and peel the tape away, leaving only the letters and shapes behind.

The finished result looks as though it was painted on. There is no film between the letters, nothing to catch dirt and no outline to give away that it is a sticker. That is why transfer stickers are the standard choice for shop window lettering, opening hours, door signs and van livery.

Transfer stickers are also cost-effective compared with signwriting or etched glass. Lettering can be changed when opening hours, phone numbers or branding change, simply by removing the old vinyl and applying new. For businesses in rented premises, that flexibility is a real advantage.

Where Transfer Stickers Are Used

Anywhere you want clean, professional lettering on a smooth surface, a transfer sticker is likely to be the simplest answer, with magnetic car door signs for vehicles that change hands:

  • Shop and café windows with names, logos and opening hours
  • Office glass doors and partitions
  • Vans, cars and trailers for fleet branding
  • Salon and clinic mirrors and reception walls
  • Boats, motorbikes and helmets
  • Laptops, flight cases and equipment
  • Event signage and temporary wayfinding

Vinyl Types and How Long They Last

Transfer stickers are cut from self-adhesive vinyl, and the grade depends on where the sticker goes. Standard calendered vinyl works well for flat surfaces such as windows and walls and for medium-term use, while vans and curved panels want the cast vinyl used on our custom car stickers. Cast vinyl is thinner and more conformable, so it follows curves and rivets on vehicles and resists shrinking over time, which makes it the better choice for van lettering.

Colours range from standard solid shades to metallics, frosted etch-effect vinyl that mimics sandblasted glass, and reflective vinyl for night visibility on vehicles. Etch-effect is popular on office partitions and glass doors, where it adds privacy and branding at the same time.

Outdoor life depends on the vinyl, the surface and how much sunlight it gets. We will recommend a vinyl on your custom quote once we know where the sticker will be applied.

Inside or Outside the Glass

For windows, you can apply lettering to the outside of the glass to be read normally, or to the inside, reversed, so it reads correctly from the street. Inside application protects the sticker from weather, cleaning and anyone picking at the edges, and is the usual choice for shopfronts, with clear static clings the option for lettering that changes often.

If the sticker goes on the inside, the artwork is mirrored and the adhesive is applied to the front of the vinyl, a format often called face-adhesive or reverse cut. Tell us which side of the glass you plan to use so we prepare the file correctly. Getting this wrong is the most common reason a window sticker reads backwards.

Glass doors that are read from both sides, such as office partitions, can carry a double-sided design where two layers are applied back to back, or a frosted etch-effect panel that reads well from either direction. For vehicles, application is always to the outside of the panel, and the vinyl grade matters far more than on a window.

Design Rules for Cut Vinyl

Because transfer stickers are cut rather than printed, the design needs to be made of solid shapes in one colour per layer. Gradients, photographs and fine textures cannot be cut, so send the artwork as a vector file through Design Your Box if you can. Multi-colour designs are possible by layering colours, but each colour is a separate piece that must be lined up during application.

Very thin lines and tiny text are hard to cut and weed and can lift over time. As a rough guide, keep strokes reasonably bold and avoid lettering much smaller than a few centimetres tall on windows that will be read from the street. Script fonts with hairline joins are best thickened slightly.

Send your logo as a vector file if you have one. If you only have an image, we can redraw simple shapes, and your free proof will show the cut lines so you can check every letter.

Think about contrast against what sits behind the glass. White lettering reads clearly against a dark shop interior, but can vanish against a bright white display. Gold or black may work better depending on your fit-out. If you are unsure, apply a paper mock-up to the window and step back across the street to see how it reads.

On vans, keep the message short: name, service and phone number or web address. People read a moving vehicle in a couple of seconds.

Applying Transfer Stickers Neatly

Clean the surface with a mild detergent and dry it fully, then wipe with isopropyl alcohol to remove any residue. Measure and mark the position with masking tape, as you would before fitting a printed bumper sticker to a car. For small stickers, a dry application works: peel the backing, press the sticker down from the centre outwards with a squeegee, then peel the transfer tape back slowly at a sharp angle.

Larger graphics are easier with a wet application, where a light spray of water with a drop of washing-up liquid lets you slide the vinyl into position before squeegeeing the water out. Leave it to bond before removing the tape. Avoid applying in very cold conditions, as adhesive bonds poorly below room temperature.

For multi-colour designs, apply the base layer first, then line up the next colour using the small registration marks we include on each sheet. Take your time with alignment; once the vinyl has bonded, repositioning is difficult.

Stand Across the Street and Measure the Window Before You Size the Lettering

Window lettering is sized from the pavement, not the desk. Stand where a passer-by would, on the other side of the road if the shop faces one, and judge how tall the letters need to be to read at that distance; then measure the glass panel, allowing for the frame and any existing signage. Decide which side of the glass the vinyl goes on; inside application is cut reversed and lasts longer. Check the logo for thin strokes and gradients, since cut vinyl needs solid shapes, and tell us the background colour so white lettering does not vanish into a white display.

Send the design, the finished size, the vinyl colour and where it will be applied, and a custom quote comes by email within one working day with a free design proof showing the cut lines and dimensions. Production takes 4 to 7 working days from approval and free tracked delivery reaches UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days, with minimums quoted per job from a single window to a fleet and prices from £0.25 depending on size and vinyl. Shops that also run a van usually add magnetic signs for the vehicle to the same order.

Transfer Stickers Questions

What buyers ask before ordering transfer stickers.

What is the difference between a transfer sticker and a normal sticker?

A transfer sticker has no background; only the cut letters and shapes stay on the surface. A normal sticker has a printed background and a visible edge. Transfer stickers look painted on.

Can transfer stickers go on the inside of a window?

Yes, we cut them reversed with adhesive on the front so they read correctly from outside. This protects them from weather and cleaning. Tell us which side of the glass you will use.

Which vinyl is best for a van?

Cast vinyl is usually best because it conforms to curves and rivets and resists shrinking. Calendered vinyl suits flat surfaces. We recommend a grade on your quote.

Can a transfer sticker have several colours?

Yes, by layering separate colours of vinyl. Each colour is cut and applied in turn using registration marks. Gradients and photos cannot be cut.

What is etch-effect vinyl?

It is a frosted vinyl that looks like sandblasted glass. It is popular on office doors and partitions. It adds privacy and branding together.

How small can the lettering be?

Very small text and thin lines are hard to cut and may lift. Keep strokes reasonably bold. Your proof shows the cut lines so you can check readability.

Should I apply wet or dry?

Small stickers apply well dry. Large graphics are easier wet, which lets you slide them into place. Avoid applying in very cold conditions.

Can I remove transfer stickers later?

Most vinyl can be removed with gentle heat from a hairdryer and slow peeling. Any adhesive residue can be cleaned off with a suitable remover. Removal is easier on glass than painted surfaces.

Can you work from a logo image rather than a vector?

We can redraw simple logos for cutting. A vector file gives the best result. The proof will show the final cut shape.

How quickly can I get window lettering for a new shop?

We price each custom transfer stickers job individually and email the custom quote within one working day. Production takes 4–7 working days after approval and free tracked UK mainland delivery takes 2–3 working days.
