Custom Clear Static Clings for Windows

from £0.25 a clingPriced per job · low minimums

Clear static clings are thin vinyl films that hold onto glass by static rather than adhesive, so they go up in seconds and peel off without leaving any residue. Shops, cafés and offices use clear static clings for offers, opening hours and notices that change from month to month.

How a Cling Sticks Without Glue

A static cling is made from a soft, flexible vinyl that clings to smooth surfaces such as glass, mirrors and glossy panels. Press it on with a little pressure, smooth out the air and it stays put. When it is time for a change, lift a corner and peel it away. There is no sticky layer, so the glass is left clean and the cling can be stored on its backing sheet and used again.

This makes clings the sensible choice for anything temporary. A sale that runs for two weeks, a new menu, a notice about new opening hours or a sign welcoming card payments can all be changed without scraping the window or hiring a fitter. For landlords who do not allow permanent signage, clings are often the only practical option.

Clings also suit businesses that rent space for short periods, such as pop-up shops, market halls and exhibition stands. The graphics go up on the first morning and come down on the last evening with nothing left behind, so there is no dispute over the deposit. A cling that needs to stay put for a year is better made as a removable vinyl sticker, which has adhesive but still peels cleanly.

Clear Film and Printing Choices

On clear film, the areas you do not print stay transparent, so the design appears to float on the glass. This suits logos, lettering and outline graphics where you want customers to still see into the shop. Bright colours look vivid against a dark interior, while pale colours can fade into the background in bright daylight.

To make colours more solid on clear film, we can print a white layer underneath the artwork. White backing turns a translucent print into an opaque one, so reds stay red and text stays crisp whichever way the light falls. Without it, the print behaves more like stained glass, glowing when lit from behind.

  • Clear film with full-colour print for a floating effect
  • White underlay behind the artwork for solid, opaque colour
  • Reverse printing so the design reads correctly from outside when the cling is applied inside the glass
  • Double-sided printing with a message readable from both inside and outside

Inside or Outside the Glass

Most clings are fitted inside the window, which protects them from rain, dirt and people picking at the edges. For this, the artwork is printed in reverse on the face that touches the glass, so it reads correctly from the street. Applying a cling outside is possible on sheltered doors, but it will need cleaning and may not last as long in bad weather.

Think about what the cling will face. A south-facing window with strong sun can fade bright inks over time, so for long-term notices, choose darker colours or plan to replace the cling now and then. Clings on fridge doors, display cabinets and glass partitions inside a building last much longer as they are away from sunlight.

Sizes and Shapes for Clear Static Clings

Clings can be cut to almost any size up to the width of the film, and to a custom shape following the outline of a logo or lettering. Small round or square clings work for card payment signs, accessibility notices and opening hours on a door. Larger panels suit sale announcements and window displays. Very large graphics can be split into panels that butt together on the glass.

Measure the glass you want to cover and the viewing distance. Text on a door seen from a metre away can be modest; text on a window seen from across the road needs to be several times larger. We will suggest a minimum text height on your proof.

For a whole shopfront, it often works better to use several smaller clings than one large one. Smaller pieces are easier to handle when fitting, easier to store and can be rearranged as offers change. A clear logo cling can stay in place all year while the message panels around it come and go. Cut shapes follow the same rules as our die-cut stickers in custom shapes, with a 3 mm bleed around the outline.

Who Uses Window Clings

Independent shops use them for sales, new arrivals and events. Cafés and restaurants put menus, offers and opening times on the door. Estate agents and letting agents use clings on the window to frame property listings. Gyms, salons and clinics use them for frosted-look privacy bands with a logo. Car dealers use small clings on windscreens for prices and features, as they peel off cleanly before a test drive and leave no film on the glass for the driver to look through.

Offices and schools use them on glass partitions for room names, directions and safety markings, and retailers often keep a set of clings for recurring events that can be stored and brought out again. Opticians and gyms often pair window clings with wall decals inside the shop so the message continues past the door.

Fitting and Storing Clings

Clean the glass first with a mild window cleaner and dry it thoroughly. Peel the cling from its backing, place it from the top edge downwards and smooth it with a soft cloth or a card, working from the middle to push out air bubbles. A light mist of water on the glass makes positioning easier, as the cling can be slid into place before it grips.

When you take a cling down, put it back on its original backing sheet and store it flat, away from heat. Kept this way, a cling can be reused many times. Avoid folding it, as creases do not always smooth out.

If a cling starts to lose its grip after many uses, wash it gently in lukewarm water with a drop of washing-up liquid and let it dry flat. Dust and grease on the surface are usually the cause, and a quick clean restores most of the cling's hold. If bubbles are a worry, the finish comparison guide explains why a matt film hides small ones better than gloss.

Decide Which Side of the Glass Before Artwork

A cling printed for the inside of a window is mirrored, so the wording reads correctly from the street, and it carries the print on the sticky side. One printed for the outside is not mirrored and takes a laminate against rain. Choosing late means re-setting the file, so tell us the side first. Inside is better for shopfronts with passing traffic; outside only when the inside of the glass is covered by blinds or shelving.

Then send the size, shape and artwork, and a quote arrives by email within one working day. The free proof shows the cling as it will read from the viewing side, with any white underlay marked. Clings are printed in 4 to 7 working days after approval and delivered by tracked courier, included for UK mainland addresses; faults reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Cafés that change their window message with the seasons keep a few white static clings for promotions in the drawer and swap them over.

Clear Static Clings Questions

What buyers ask before ordering clear static clings.

Do static clings leave marks on the glass?

No, they hold by static rather than glue, so they peel off cleanly. Clean the glass first so they grip well.

Can I reuse a static cling?

Yes, put it back on its backing sheet and store it flat. Kept away from heat and folds, it can be used many times.

Should the cling go inside or outside the window?

Inside is best, as it is protected from weather. We print in reverse so it reads correctly from the street.

Why would I need a white underlay?

On clear film, colours look translucent. A white layer behind the artwork makes them solid and easy to read in any light.

Can clings be cut to a custom shape?

Yes, we can cut around a logo, lettering or any outline. Simple shapes are easiest to apply.

Will a cling stick to a painted wall?

No, clings need a smooth, glossy surface such as glass, mirrors or glossy panels. They will not grip textured or matt surfaces.

How big should my text be?

It depends on the viewing distance. We suggest a minimum text height on your proof based on where the cling will be seen.

Do clings fade in the sun?

Strong direct sun can fade bright inks over time. Darker colours last longer in south-facing windows.

How much do clear static clings cost?

Prices start from £0.25 depending on size, print and quantity. Email us the details and a custom quote for clear static clings arrives within one working day.

How do I avoid air bubbles?

Mist the glass lightly with water, place the cling from the top and smooth from the centre outwards with a soft cloth or card.

Can a cling be printed on both sides?

Yes, double-sided clings show one message to the street and another to people inside.
