Custom Static Clings

from £0.25 a clingPriced per job · low minimums

A static cling holds onto smooth glass by itself, with no adhesive, so it can be peeled off, repositioned and stuck back up as often as you like. We print custom static clings for shop windows, opening hours, offers and notices that need to change without leaving sticky residue behind.

How a Cling Stays Up Without Glue

Static cling is a soft, thin plastic film with a slightly tacky, very smooth surface. When you press it against glass and squeeze out the air, it grips the surface through a combination of static charge and the vacuum created between two flat, clean faces. Nothing chemical is involved, which is why it lifts away cleanly and can be put back up again.

That makes clings different from vinyl stickers. A sticker uses adhesive and is designed to stay where it lands; trying to move it usually stretches or tears it, and removing it often leaves marks on the glass. A cling is meant to be temporary or movable. It suits anything you might want to change, take down at the end of a promotion or store away until next time.

The trade-off is that clings need a smooth, non-porous surface. They work on glass, mirrors, glossy plastic and polished metal, but not on painted walls, wood or textured surfaces. For painted walls, our printed wall decals are the better choice.

Popular Uses for Window Clings

Shopfronts are the obvious home for clings. Opening hours, card payment signs, a sale banner or a new product announcement can all go up on the door or window and come down when they are no longer needed. Because they do not damage the glass, they are popular with tenants whose leases restrict permanent signage.

They are also used on the inside of vehicle windows for parking permits and fleet notices, on glass partitions in offices to label meeting rooms, on fridge doors in cafés and on mirrors in salons and gyms. Schools and nurseries use them for safety notices on glass doors, and estate agents use them to brand display windows between listings.

Hospitality venues find clings especially handy because their messages change so often. A pub can put up a match-day offer on Friday and take it down on Monday, a restaurant can promote a set menu for a few weeks, and a café can swap its specials board without scraping glass. Because the same cling can go back up next time, a small library of reusable signs builds up quickly.

Clear, White and Inside-Facing Clings

The choice of film depends on where the cling will be read from. Clear cling lets the glass show through around your design, so the graphic looks painted onto the window. It works best for designs with a strong outline and dark or saturated colours, because pale colours on clear film can look faint against daylight.

White cling has an opaque white base, so colours look as bright as on paper. It suits photographs, full panels and anything that needs to be seen against a busy background. A white base can also be printed under selected areas on clear film to make logos and text pop.

For signs placed on the inside of a window but read from the street, the design is printed in reverse on the film, so it reads correctly through the glass. This protects the print from rain and passers-by and keeps it in place where it cannot be peeled off from outside. Our clear static clings for glass page covers the see-through film in more detail.

Designing Clings That Read From a Distance

Window graphics are read by people walking past, often from a few metres away and at an angle. Large, simple lettering with strong contrast beats small text every time. Opening hours, for example, should be readable without stopping, so allow generous line spacing and avoid thin decorative fonts.

Consider what is behind the glass. A dark shop interior makes white and bright colours stand out, while a bright interior or a reflective window may need a white-backed cling for the design to be visible. If you are not sure, send a photo of the window and we can suggest the best film.

Die-cutting to the shape of the design, rather than leaving a rectangle, gives a cleaner look on clear film. Simple outlines around a logo or a speech bubble shape around an offer work well.

Think about the view from inside as well. A face-out cling on clear film shows its blank reverse to the room, which is fine on a back door but noticeable on a café window where customers sit. Printing a simple design on the second side, or choosing a white cling, keeps the inside view tidy. If you need a design that stays put for good, adhesive custom vinyl stickers are the permanent alternative.

Sizes for Doors, Windows and Vehicles

Clings can be printed from a small round sign the size of a coaster up to large window panels. For doors, a strip across eye level for opening hours or a narrow band at handle height for a safety marker is common. Larger clings are easier to fit in two or three pieces, as a single big panel can trap air and be awkward to handle on a ladder.

Measure the glass you have rather than the frame, and leave a margin around the cling so it does not curl over seals or beading. For vehicles, check where the cling will sit relative to wipers, tints and heated screen lines. For painted door panels, printed car door magnets do the same removable job.

If your window has a frosted band or a manifestation strip already, plan the cling around it rather than over it. Clings do not grip well on textured or etched glass, so position them on the clear areas. Sending a quick photo with rough measurements is usually the fastest way to agree a size that suits the space.

Fitting and Reusing Your Clings

Clean the glass first and dry it thoroughly. Peel the cling from its backing, place it at the top edge, and smooth it down from the centre outwards with a soft cloth or squeegee to push out air bubbles. A light mist of water on the glass can help you slide it into position before smoothing.

To store a cling for reuse, put it back on its original backing sheet and keep it flat, away from heat and dust. Dust on the cling surface is the main reason it loses grip, and a quick rinse in clean water and a careful dry usually brings it back. Clings for car windows can be paired with long-lasting custom car stickers for details that stay on all year.

Static Clings Questions

What buyers ask before ordering static clings.

Do static clings leave marks on glass?

No adhesive is used, so a cling lifts away cleanly from smooth glass. At most you may need to wipe the glass where dust has collected around the edges.

Can I put a cling on the inside of my shop window?

Yes. We print the design in reverse so it reads correctly from the street through the glass, and it is protected from weather and passers-by.

Will a static cling stick to a painted wall?

No, clings need a smooth, non-porous surface such as glass, mirrors, glossy plastic or polished metal. For walls, a vinyl sticker is the better option.

Should I choose clear or white cling?

Clear cling makes the graphic look painted onto the glass and suits bold designs. White cling keeps colours bright and works better for photographs or busy backgrounds behind the window.

How many times can I reuse a cling?

Many times, as long as it is kept clean and stored flat on its backing sheet. Dust is what weakens the grip, and rinsing it in clean water often restores it.

Can you print our opening hours on a cling?

Yes, it is one of the most common uses. Send us your hours and logo and we will lay them out clearly for a door or window.

Can clings be used on car windows?

Yes, they are often used for parking permits and fleet notices on the inside of vehicle windows. Check the position against tints and heated screen lines first.

Can a cling be cut to the shape of my logo?

Yes, die-cutting around the outline gives a neater look on clear film than a plain rectangle.

How do I avoid bubbles when fitting a cling?

Clean the glass, position the cling from the top edge and smooth from the centre outwards. A light mist of water lets you slide it into place first.

What if my clings arrive damaged?

Report any misprint or damage within 10 days of delivery and we will reprint or refund them.
