Custom Folded Hang Tags for Clothing and Gifts

from £0.25 a tagPriced per job · low minimums

Custom folded hang tags are printed cards scored down the middle so they open like a small booklet, giving you four panels instead of two. Fashion labels and gift brands use the extra space for a short brand story, care notes, materials and a price, all on a tag that still looks neat hanging from a sleeve or a bottle neck.

Four Panels Instead of Two

A flat hang tag gives you a front and a back. That is enough for a logo and a price, but brands with something to say quickly run out of room. A folded tag doubles the space without making the tag look bigger on the garment. The front carries the brand, the inside opens to a short message or product detail, and the back holds the price, size and barcode.

Shoppers pick up a folded tag and open it almost by reflex, which is a moment of attention a flat tag rarely gets. Small fashion labels often use the inside to say who made the piece or how it was made, and gift brands use it for a personal note or care instructions.

That curiosity is useful. A shopper who opens the tag has already stopped browsing for a second, and a short, honest line inside about the fabric or the maker can be the nudge that turns a look into a purchase. Brands often pair them with clothing hang tags so the whole order arrives in one look.

Fold Styles and Shapes

Folded tags come in a few common constructions, each suited to different products.

Side folds are the safe default for clothing; the others are worth it when the product or story needs them. For a simpler single-panel shape, our printed round hang tags hang just as neatly.

  • Side fold, opening like a greeting card, the most common style for clothing.
  • Top fold, opening upwards, which hangs evenly from a hole in the fold.
  • Tri-fold with three panels, for products with more information such as homeware or accessories.
  • Die-cut shapes such as rounded corners, arches or a logo outline, folded along a central score.
  • Folded tags with a pocket or slot that holds a spare button or a small card.

Choosing Card and Finish

Folded tags need a card that scores and folds cleanly without cracking along the spine. A heavy uncoated board gives a tactile, natural feel that suits independent fashion labels and handmade goods. Smooth coated board gives sharper colour and suits brands with photographic or illustrated designs. Kraft card has a rustic look that works well for homeware, candles and knitwear.

Finishes add character. Soft-touch lamination feels luxurious, foil blocking makes a logo catch the light, and blind embossing adds texture without colour. Edge painting in a contrast colour looks particularly good on thick tags.

Duplex board, two layers bonded together, lets you have one colour outside and another inside. A black outer with a cream inner, for instance, gives a dramatic reveal when the tag is opened and needs no extra print. Our board and finish choices page shows the card weights and coatings we offer.

Sizing and Hole Position

Size the tag to the product. A tag on a T-shirt or scarf can be small and discreet; a tag on a coat or a large gift can be bigger and still look balanced. Think about the folded size, since that is what hangs on the product. Most clothing brands use a folded size somewhere between a business card and a slightly larger rectangle.

The hole or eyelet position decides how the tag hangs. For a side fold, put the hole near the top of the spine so it hangs closed. For a top fold, a hole through both layers in the middle keeps it straight. Metal eyelets reinforce the hole on heavier card and give a finished look, and we can supply tags pre-strung with cotton cord, ribbon or safety pins.

Check the tag against the product before you approve. A tag that looks right on screen can feel too heavy on a fine silk top or too small on a chunky knit. If you have an old tag of a similar size, hang it on the garment to judge proportion. Our guide to measuring products for custom packaging has sizing tips that apply to tags too.

What to Print on Each Panel

Plan the panels before you design. The front should do one job: carry your brand clearly. The inside left often holds a short brand line or a few sentences on how the piece was made. The inside right can list fabric, care symbols and country of origin if you supply it. The back is the working panel, with size, price, style code and a barcode for the till.

Variable data printing lets each tag carry a different size, style code or barcode within one order, which saves sticking labels on later. If prices change often, leave the price area blank and add a sticker or handwrite it, keeping the printed tags useful for longer.

Care symbols should follow the standard set your garments use, and fibre content wording follows legal rules for textiles. Supply the exact text and symbols you need, and we will make sure they sit clearly on the panel rather than squeezed into a corner. Care and fibre details can also go on custom garment labels for care details sewn into the seam.

Gift Brands and Non-Clothing Uses

Folded tags are not just for clothing. Candle makers hang them from jar necks with ingredients and burning notes inside. Gift shops use them on hampers with a space to write a message. Bakers tie them to cake boxes with flavour and allergen details. Jewellery makers use small folded tags to tell the story of a stone or the meaning of a design.

For gift use, leave one inside panel blank with a few printed lines, so the buyer can write a message. It turns the tag into a gift card and adds value at very little cost.

Florists and plant shops use folded tags as care cards too, tied to a pot with watering and light notes inside, which saves customers searching online once they get home. Plant and gift shops sometimes prefer the shape of our leaf shaped hang tags.

Folded Hang Tags Questions

What buyers ask before ordering folded hang tags.

Will the card crack along the fold?

Not with the right board and scoring. We crease the card before folding so it opens cleanly. Very thick boards may need a double score, which we handle as standard.

Can each tag show a different size?

Yes. Variable data printing lets us change sizes, style codes and barcodes on each tag within one order.

Where should the hole go on a side fold tag?

Near the top of the spine, so the tag hangs closed and opens naturally. The proof shows the exact position.

Can you supply tags already strung?

Yes. We can attach cotton cord, ribbon or safety pins so tags are ready to hang straight from the box.

What should go inside the tag?

A short brand line, how the piece was made or care notes work well. Keep it brief; shoppers read a few sentences, not a page.

Is kraft card a good choice for clothing?

Kraft suits natural, handmade and outdoor brands. For bright colours or photographs, a smooth white board will print better.

Can I leave the price blank?

Yes. Many brands leave a blank price area for a sticker or handwriting so the tags stay usable when prices change.

Can folded tags have a die-cut shape?

Yes. Rounded corners, arches and logo outlines all work as long as the fold line is straight and runs through the shape cleanly.

Do metal eyelets add much to the cost?

They add a small amount per tag. They are worth it on heavy card and on products handled a lot in store, where holes can tear.

Can gift brands use folded tags as message cards?

Yes. Leaving an inside panel with printed lines turns the tag into a gift card that buyers can write in.

Can I order a small run for a market stall?

Yes. Minimums are low and quoted per job, so small makers selling at markets and fairs are welcome.
