A Tag Shape That Tells the Story

Most hang tags are rectangles. They work, but they look the same as every other tag on the shelf. A tag cut in the shape of a leaf says something about the product before anyone reads a word: this is about plants, gardens, nature or something grown. For a garden centre, a houseplant shop or a natural skincare brand, that instant connection is valuable.

Leaf tags are also simply nicer to handle. The curved outline and pointed tip feel more considered than a square corner, and customers often keep them, tucking them into a pot or pinning them to a noticeboard as a reminder of a plant's name or care routine.

Because the shape is cut with a custom forme, you can choose the style of leaf too: a simple rounded leaf, a pointed tropical leaf, an oak or maple outline, or a stylised version of the leaf in your own logo. Brands that want a plainer shape for most products pair the leaf with standard clothing hang tags.

Where Leaf-Shaped Hang Tags Work Best

Leaf tags suit a wider range of products than you might think.

If your range crosses several of these, one leaf shape in different colours can identify product types while keeping a family look. Hampers that need a parcel tag rather than a product tag use our printed shipping tags with string.

  • Houseplants and garden plants: plant name, light and watering needs on the back.
  • Herbs and seedlings at markets: variety names and growing tips.
  • Natural skincare and soaps: tied around jars, bottles or soap bars.
  • Tea, honey and preserves: hung from the neck of a jar or tin.
  • Gift bags and hampers: a branded tag with a message space.
  • Garments and accessories: for brands with a botanical or outdoor identity.

Card Weights and Paper Choices

Hang tags need a sturdy card so they do not bend or tear at the hole. A thick uncoated card gives a natural, tactile feel that suits plant and botanical brands. A smooth coated card gives brighter colours and sharper detail if your design includes photography or fine illustration.

Kraft card gives a rustic, earthy look that pairs well with green or black print. Coloured card in shades of green allows a single colour print, such as white or dark green, to look striking without full colour costs. For tags that will live outdoors, such as in a garden centre where plants are watered daily, ask about a water-resistant coated stock or a synthetic material so the tag lasts.

Thicker tags can be made by laminating two sheets of card together, giving a premium, rigid tag with print on both sides. The card weights and finishes guide explains uncoated, coated and kraft stocks.

Printing Both Sides

A leaf tag has two faces, and both are worth using. The front usually carries your logo or the product name, with a simple design that works within the leaf outline. The back is ideal for practical information: plant care symbols, a short description, ingredients, a price or a QR code linking to more detail.

Leaf veins can be printed or embossed onto the tag to make the shape more convincing. A foil-stamped vein in gold or copper on green card looks particularly elegant on gift products. Keep important text inside the safe area away from the cut edge and the hole, as the leaf's tapering shape leaves less room near the tip and stem.

If you need different information on each tag, such as plant names or prices, we can print variable text across a run so each tag is specific to its product. Upload the artwork through the free proof request and we will fit it inside the leaf outline.

Sizing, Holes and Strings

The hole is usually punched at the stem end of the leaf, so the tag hangs naturally with the tip pointing down. A reinforced hole, with a small card or metal eyelet, stops the tag tearing off when a customer pulls it to read the back.

Tags can be supplied loose or pre-strung with cotton string, jute twine, coloured ribbon or elastic loops. Jute twine suits rustic and botanical brands, while satin ribbon suits gifts and skincare. For plants, a plastic loop or a pick that pushes into the soil can replace the string entirely.

Leaf tags need to be big enough to read but small enough not to overwhelm the product. On a small pot herb, a tag the size of a playing card is plenty. On a large houseplant or a gift hamper, a longer tag gives more room for care information and branding.

Think about how much text goes on the back. Care symbols take less space than written instructions, so a simple icon set can let you use a smaller tag. If you have a range of products with very different amounts of information, two sizes of the same leaf shape keep things tidy. Tags that need more room for care notes can open out as folded hang tags with an inside panel.

Using Tags to Sell, Not Just to Label

In a plant shop, the tag is often the only salesperson a customer meets. Shoppers pick up a pot, turn the tag over and decide in a few seconds whether the plant suits their windowsill. A tag that answers the obvious questions, such as how much light, how often to water and whether it is safe around pets if you have checked that information, removes the doubt that stops a sale.

Write care notes in plain language. 'Bright spot, no direct sun' is more helpful than a botanical description, and a short personality line, such as 'forgiving if you forget to water', makes a plant feel approachable for beginners. Keep the Latin name for those who want it, but do not lead with it.

For gifts and natural products, the tag can carry a short origin story or a handwritten-style message. Leave a small blank area if you sell gifts, so staff or customers can add a name. A QR code linking to a care video or reorder page extends the tag's usefulness long after the plant has gone home. Jar labels to match the tag sit under labels and stickers for small brands.

Draw the Leaf Outline Before the Text

A leaf tag is cut from a custom forme, so the first thing to settle is the outline: a rounded leaf, a pointed tropical one, an oak or the leaf from your own logo. Only then fit the text, as the tip and stem leave less room than a rectangle. Count what goes on the back; care symbols fit a 50 x 90 mm tag, written instructions may need the 70 x 130 mm one. Say if the tags will be watered daily, as that calls for a coated or synthetic stock.

Send the shape, the size, the card, the quantity and any string you want fitted, and a custom quote comes back by email within one working day, with tags from £0.25 and low minimums quoted per job. The free proof shows the outline, the hole and both printed sides. Production takes 4–7 working days after approval and tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses is free, taking 2–3 working days. Misprinted or damaged tags reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Plainer tags for the rest of the range are often added as round hang tags in the same card to the order.

Leaf-Shaped Hang Tags Questions

What buyers ask before ordering Leaf-Shaped hang tags.

Can the tag be cut in the shape of my logo leaf?

Yes, we can cut a custom leaf shape based on your logo, as long as the outline is not too intricate to cut cleanly. Very fine serrations are smoothed slightly so the edge does not tear.

Will tags survive watering in a garden centre?

Standard card will soften when wet. For outdoor or watered plants, ask about a water-resistant coated stock or synthetic material.

Can each tag have a different plant name?

Yes, variable printing lets us print different names, prices or care notes on each tag in a run. Send the list as a spreadsheet with the quantity per name.

Where is the hole punched?

Usually at the stem end, so the tag hangs with the tip pointing down. We can move it if you prefer.

Can tags come with string attached?

Yes, we can supply them pre-strung with cotton, jute twine, ribbon or elastic loops. Pre-strung tags save a lot of time at the potting bench.

Can I print care symbols on the back?

Yes, light, watering and temperature symbols save space and are easy for customers to read at a glance. We can set a standard icon row that repeats across the range.

Can leaf veins be embossed?

Yes, embossed or foil-stamped veins make the leaf shape more realistic and add a premium feel. Embossing works best on the thicker uncoated card.

Which card suits a botanical skincare brand?

Thick uncoated or kraft card with a single colour print and a jute or cotton string gives a natural, considered look. A foil vein in copper lifts it for gift ranges.

Can I use leaf tags on clothing?

Yes, leaf tags suit fashion and accessory brands with a botanical or outdoor identity. Add a reinforced hole, since garment tags are pulled more often than plant tags.

What if the tags arrive with misprints?

Report any misprints or damage within 10 days, and we will reprint or refund the affected tags. Check a few from each bundle against the proof on arrival.
