Labels for Lids, Sides and Necks

A preserve jar offers three places for a label, and the best-looking jars often use two. The side label is the main one, carrying the name of the preserve, your brand and the details a buyer needs. A round lid label sits on top of the metal cap and is what customers see first when jars are lined up on a table or in a crate. A neck tag or a small band over the lid adds a finishing touch and can double as a tamper seal.

Farm shops and market stalls often display jars from above, so a printed lid label can do more selling than the side label. A simple circle with the brand mark and the flavour name in large type works well. If your jars are covered with a fabric or paper topper tied with string, a smaller round label on the topper replaces the lid label.

Keep the look consistent across the range. One layout, with the flavour name and an accent colour changing from jar to jar, makes a stall or shelf look organised. Many customers order these alongside our printed jar labels, printed in the same colours.

Sizing to Your Jar

Preserve jars come in a few common shapes. Hexagonal jars have flat facets, and a label sized to one or two facets sits neatly without wrinkling; the guide to measuring your product shows how to find the flat area on a curved jar. Round jars with straight sides take a wider wrap-around label, while jars with shoulders or a waist need the label kept to the straight section. Measure the flat or straight area of your jar, from just below the shoulder to just above the base, and the width you want the label to cover.

For round jars, measure the circumference with a strip of paper and decide whether the label wraps fully or covers the front only. A front-only label is easier to apply by hand and leaves the back of the jar clear so the colour of the preserve shows through. Lid labels should be a few millimetres smaller than the flat top of the cap so they do not catch the rim.

If you sell the same preserve in two jar sizes, such as a standard jar and a small taster, we can scale the same design to both.

  • Standard round jam jar: side label around 90 x 50 mm
  • Hexagonal jar: label sized to one or two facets
  • Small taster jar: side label around 60 x 35 mm
  • Lid labels: 50 to 70 mm diameter depending on cap size

Choosing a Label Stock That Copes

Jars get handled with sticky fingers, wiped down, stored in fridges once opened and occasionally dropped into a sink. Uncoated paper labels look charming and are easy to write on, which suits makers who add dates or batch details by hand, but they can mark if they get wet, which is where the polypropylene BOPP labels come in. Coated paper resists light splashes and shows colours more brightly.

For chutneys and pickles that live in the fridge, or jars washed after filling, a polypropylene film label is more practical. It does not tear, resists moisture and oil, and keeps colours sharp. Textured papers with a laid or watercolour finish give a traditional, handmade feel and suit preserves sold as gifts.

Clear film labels let the colour of the jam show through the label itself, which looks striking with deep red berries and amber marmalade.

What to Print on a Preserve Label

A preserve label usually needs the product name, your business name and address, the net weight, the ingredients with allergens emphasised, and a best before date. If you sell from a stall or shop, the rules on what must appear can differ by how and where you sell, so check with your local trading standards team if you are unsure, as you would for any printed product label.

Leave a blank area on the label for the best before date and batch number, so you can write or stamp them in as each batch is made. That way one print run lasts across many batches. A short serving suggestion, such as pairing a chutney with cheese, helps new customers and makes the jar feel more personal.

Design Tips for a Traditional Product

Preserves sell on tradition and trust, and the most successful labels tend to be simple: a clear name, a little illustration of the main fruit or vegetable, and an honest description. Hand-drawn lettering or a classic serif font suits the category, while bright, modern designs can help a brand look different in a deli full of gingham; the print and finish options compared page shows how foil sits on textured paper.

Colour coding helps customers find their favourite at a glance. Strawberry in red, apricot in orange and green tomato chutney in deep green may sound obvious, but it works. Keep the background consistent so the range looks like a family.

If you sell at markets, a lid label with your logo printed large helps people remember where they bought the jar when they finish it.

Rolls or Sheets

Labels on sheets are easy to apply by hand and suit small batches. Labels on rolls work with a hand applicator or a labelling machine and are faster for larger production days, as our custom roll labels page explains. Tell us how you plan to apply them and we will supply the right format, with the correct roll direction if you use a machine.

If you apply labels by hand, a jar holder made from a folded cloth or a rubber mat keeps the jar steady and the label straight.

Order a few extra sheets or a slightly longer roll than you think you need. Labels go wonky, jars get relabelled after a smudge, and it is frustrating to run out halfway through a batch with jars cooling on the side.

Label a Cold Jar From Your Last Batch Before You Order a Run

The quickest way to get a preserve label right is to try one on a real jar from the last batch, cooled and dry. Cut a paper rectangle to the size you have in mind, hold it on the jar and see whether it sits inside one or two facets of a hexagonal jar or on the flat band of a round one without wrinkling at the edges. Check that the ingredients and allergen text fit at a readable size, and leave a blank panel if dates are written by hand. Say if jars are stored chilled once opened, which moves the stock from paper to polypropylene.

Send the jar size, the label shapes, the stock and the number of designs, and a custom quote comes by email within one working day, labels from £0.25 each on simpler sizes, minimums low and quoted per job; every design is proofed free so spelling, weights and allergen text can be checked. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and free tracked delivery reaches UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days. Makers who tie a tag round the lid often add small round hang tags to the same order.

Preserve Jar Labels Questions

What buyers ask before ordering preserve jar labels.

Can I write dates on the labels?

Yes. Uncoated and coated papers take pen well, and we can leave a blank panel for the best before date and batch number.

Which stock suits jars kept in the fridge?

Polypropylene film resists moisture and condensation far better than paper. It is the best choice for chutneys and pickles stored chilled.

Do I need a lid label as well?

It is optional, but lid labels are very effective on stalls where jars are seen from above. They also tie the range together.

How do I size a label for a hexagonal jar?

Measure one or two flat facets and size the label to sit within them. A label that crosses edges can wrinkle.

Can one design cover several flavours?

Yes. Keep the layout identical and change the flavour name and accent colour. Each version is proofed separately.

Can the colour of the preserve show through?

Clear film labels let the jam show through the label, which looks striking with deeply coloured preserves. Print white under the text so it stays readable against dark fruit.

Rolls or sheets for hand labelling?

Sheets are easiest for hand labelling small batches. Rolls suit a hand applicator or a labelling machine.

Why do my labels peel on fresh jars?

Labels stick poorly to warm or damp glass. Let jars cool and dry fully before labelling.

What information should the label include?

Usually the name, your business details, net weight, ingredients with allergens emphasised and a best before date. Check with trading standards if you are unsure what applies to you.

What is the starting price for preserve jar labels?

Labels start from £0.25 each on simpler sizes and quantities. Special stocks and foil are quoted per job.

What if a label run arrives misprinted?

Tell us within 10 days of delivery with a photo and we reprint or refund. Check the allergen text on the first sheet or roll before labelling a batch, since that is the line that matters most.
