Where QR Code Stickers Earn Their Place

A QR code is only useful if it is in front of someone at the moment they want the information. On a restaurant table, that moment is when diners sit down and want to see the menu or order. On a product, it is when a customer wants instructions, ingredients or a video showing how to use it. In a shop window after closing time, it is when a passer-by wants to know your opening hours or browse online.

Stickers make this easy because they go anywhere. They can be added to tables you already own, to packaging you have already printed, to till points, delivery bags, business cards, equipment and vehicles. There is no need to reprint a whole menu or box just to add a link.

Because a sticker costs little and takes seconds to apply, it is also an easy way to test an idea. A cafe can try table ordering on a few tables before committing, or a product brand can add a recipe link to one batch of packaging and see how many people scan it. If the idea works, a larger run can follow; if it does not, very little has been spent. p2 Round versions for jar lids follow our circle stickers page for diameter advice.

Making Sure the Code Actually Scans

The single most important thing about a QR code sticker is that it works. A code that fails on the first try is often abandoned, and people may assume your link is broken. Scan reliability depends on size, contrast, a clear border and print sharpness.

As a rule of thumb, the code should be at least 20 mm square for close scanning, such as on a product, and larger for anything scanned from further away. A table sticker read from a seated position works well at 40 to 50 mm. A window sticker read from the pavement may need 100 mm or more. Keep a quiet zone of plain background around the code roughly the width of four of its small squares, and print dark code on a light background rather than the other way round. p1 Contrast rules for small print are the same as on our product labels page.

  • Minimum 20 mm square for close range
  • 40 to 50 mm for table and counter stickers
  • 100 mm or more for windows and walls
  • Dark code on a light background with a clear border
  • Test on several phones before approving the proof

Static or Dynamic Links

A static QR code points directly at a fixed web address. If that address changes, the sticker becomes useless. A dynamic code points at a short redirect link that you control, so you can change where it goes later without reprinting. For anything with a long life, such as table stickers or product packaging, a dynamic link is usually the safer choice.

We print whatever code you supply, so set up the link and generate the code on your side before sending artwork. If you only have a web address, we can create a static code from it, but we will remind you that changing the address later means new stickers.

Dynamic links have another benefit: most link services show how many times a code has been scanned and when. That makes it easy to compare a table sticker with a window sticker, or one product line with another, and to move stickers to wherever they perform best. It also lets you point the same sticker at a changed menu, a new product page or a temporary offer without touching the physical label. p2 Codes on roll labels for packaging lines are covered on our roll labels page.

Materials for Indoors, Outdoors and Packaging

Paper stickers are inexpensive and work well on dry indoor surfaces such as boxes, bags and paperwork. White vinyl stickers resist water, spills and wiping, which makes them the right choice for restaurant tables, bar tops and anywhere that is cleaned often. Clear vinyl lets the surface show through around the code, which looks neat on glass and coloured packaging, but the code itself still needs a white backing layer to scan reliably.

For windows, choose a sticker that reads from the inside or the outside depending on where it is mounted. Stickers fixed inside a window and read from the street are printed in reverse on clear vinyl with a white layer behind the code. A laminate over the top protects against scratches and UV fading for outdoor use.

Designing Around the Code

The code itself should stay simple, but the sticker around it can carry your brand. Add your logo, a short call to action and your brand colours. A call to action matters more than people expect; scan for the menu, scan to pay or scan for the how-to video tells people why they should take out their phone.

Stickers can be die-cut to custom shapes, such as a circle, a speech bubble or your logo outline, as long as the code itself remains a square with its border intact. Avoid placing a large logo in the middle of the code unless you have tested it thoroughly, as it can reduce how reliably the code reads. p1 The guide to print and finish options shows how matt and gloss laminates affect glare.

Restaurants, Shops and Product Brands

Restaurants and cafes use QR code stickers on tables for menus and ordering. Pubs use them at the bar for drink lists and event pages. Retailers place them on shelf edges to link to product information and on receipts or bags to invite customers to join a mailing list. Product brands add them to packaging for set-up guides, recipes, refill ordering or authenticity checks. Trades and service businesses stick them on vans and equipment for booking pages.

Event organisers use them on badges and signage for schedules and maps. Estate agents add them to window cards, linking to full property details.

Packaging brands often combine a QR code sticker with an existing label rather than replacing it. A small round sticker on the lid of a jar or the flap of a box can link to recipes, refill orders or a care guide, while the main label stays unchanged. It is a practical way to add digital content to stock you have already printed. p2 Window stickers read from the street use our static clings for glass where no adhesive is wanted.

Generate the Code Yourself and Scan It Twice

We print whatever QR code you send, so the link behind it is yours to set up. Use a dynamic redirect for anything that lives longer than a season, table stickers and packaging above all, so the destination can change without a reprint. Generate the code, scan it on two different phones, and send the image at full size, together with the surface it will sit on and the distance it will be read from.

That distance sets the size: 20 mm for a product in the hand, 40 to 50 mm on a table, 100 mm or more in a window. Add a call to action beside the code, because scan for the menu earns far more scans than a bare square. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day, from £0.25 a sticker.

The free proof shows the sticker at actual size and we scan the code on it; scan it yourself before approving. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after that and the stickers reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery. Restaurants that also brand the bill often add our die-cut stickers in the logo shape for the receipt.

QR Code Stickers Questions

What buyers ask before ordering QR code stickers.

What is the smallest QR code that will scan reliably?

About 20 mm square for close range scanning, such as on a product. Larger sizes are needed for anything scanned from a distance.

Will a QR code scan through a laminate?

Yes. Both gloss and matt laminates scan well. Matt is better in bright light because it reduces reflections.

Can I change the link after the stickers are printed?

Only if you use a dynamic code that points to a redirect you control. A static code always goes to the same address.

Which material is best for restaurant tables?

White vinyl with a laminate. It resists spills and frequent wiping far better than paper.

Can the sticker be a custom shape?

Yes. The sticker can be die-cut to almost any shape, as long as the code itself stays square with a plain border.

Can I put my logo in the middle of the code?

It is possible but can reduce scan reliability. If you do it, test the code carefully on several phones before approval.

Can I order stickers that read from outside a window?

Yes. We reverse print on clear vinyl with a white layer behind the code so it reads from the street when fixed inside the glass.

Do you check the code before printing?

We scan the code on the proof. You should also test it on your own phone before approving.

Can each sticker have a different code?

Unique or sequential codes may be possible on request. Mention it in your enquiry so we can confirm.

How quickly can I have table stickers for a new menu?

Production takes 4 to 7 working days after you approve the proof, then 2 to 3 working days for free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses. Set up the menu link before the stickers arrive so they work on day one.

What if the stickers do not scan when they arrive?

If stickers printed to your approved proof arrive faulty, misprinted or damaged, report it within 10 days for a reprint or refund. Check first that the link behind the code is still live.
