Custom BOPP Labels for Wet and Chilled Products

from £0.25 a labelPriced per job · low minimums

Custom BOPP labels are printed on a thin plastic film rather than paper, so they shrug off water, condensation and oily fingers that would wrinkle or tear a paper label. They are the go-to choice for drinks, sauces, chilled foods, cosmetics and cleaning products that spend time in fridges, bathrooms or ice buckets.

What BOPP Actually Is

BOPP stands for biaxially oriented polypropylene. In plain terms, it is a polypropylene film that has been stretched in two directions during manufacture, which makes it strong, stable and smooth. As a label material, that means it does not absorb water, does not stretch or bubble when a bottle sweats in the fridge, and gives a clean, crisp print surface.

Paper labels are cheaper and perfectly good for dry goods like jars of tea, boxed products and shipping cartons. The trouble starts when moisture gets involved. A paper label on a bottle of juice pulled from a chiller cabinet soaks up condensation, darkens, wrinkles and eventually peels. A BOPP label on the same bottle looks exactly as it did when it was applied.

BOPP also resists many oils, which is why it is popular for cosmetic and bath products. Hand creams, massage oils and shower gels inevitably get on the outside of the container, and a film label wipes clean rather than staining. Brands often pair them with printed product labels so the whole order arrives in one look.

White, Clear and Metallic Films

BOPP labels come in three main film types, each giving a very different look:

If you are unsure which to pick, order a small mixed run. Seeing white and clear versions of the same design on your actual bottle, under your own kitchen or shop lighting, settles the question far faster than looking at a screen. Clear film is also used for clear wrap-around bottle labels, where the no-label look runs all the way round.

  • White BOPP: an opaque white film that makes colours bright and true. The most versatile choice for printed designs on any container colour.
  • Clear BOPP: a transparent film that makes the design look printed directly onto glass or plastic, the so-called no-label look. Popular for drinks, cosmetics and premium sauces.
  • Metallic or silver BOPP: a mirrored film that gives a metallic sheen wherever ink is not printed, or under translucent colours. Striking on spirits, candles and beauty products.

Getting the Clear Label Look Right

Clear labels can look stunning, but they need careful artwork. Coloured inks on clear film are translucent, so they take on the colour of the product behind them. A pale yellow design on a clear bottle of dark sauce will almost disappear. To keep colours bright on clear film, we print a layer of white ink behind the coloured areas, which acts like a primer. Your proof will show where the white layer sits.

Clear labels look best on smooth containers and on products where the contents add to the look, such as a bottle of gin with botanicals or a jar of brightly coloured preserves. They show every bubble and crease, so they suit automated or careful hand application.

If your containers are frosted or textured, a white or metallic film usually looks more professional than clear. The white underlay trick is the same one used on clear vinyl stickers, and the proof marks it the same way.

Containers and Surfaces

BOPP is flexible enough to wrap around round bottles and jars, and it sits flat on square or oval containers. Very tight curves, such as on small vials or lip balm tubes, need a thinner film and careful sizing so the edges do not lift. Squeezable bottles and tubes need a film that can flex without cracking or creasing, and we can advise on the right grade.

Adhesive matters as much as the film. A permanent adhesive suits most bottles and jars. For chilled and frozen products, a cold-temperature adhesive grips even when the container is cold or slightly damp at the time of labelling. Products that are stored in ice or wet environments benefit from a stronger adhesive that copes with long immersion.

Tell us what your container is made of, whether it will be chilled or frozen, and whether it will be labelled by hand or by machine.

A matt clear film can also look very refined on frosted bottles, so ask for a sample if you are considering that combination. Curved and tapered containers are discussed on the custom product labels page, with a note on label height against the taper.

Sizing a BOPP Label

For wrap-around labels on round bottles, measure the circumference and decide whether the label should meet at the back or leave a gap. Leaving a few millimetres between the ends gives room for slight variation in application. The label height should sit within the flat part of the bottle, below the shoulder and above the base curve.

For front and back labels, measure the flat panel of the container and leave a small margin so the label is not right at the edge. Rounded corners on the label help prevent lifting, especially on squeezy bottles.

If you apply labels by machine, tell us the roll core size, outer diameter and which way the label should unwind. Getting this right means the rolls run smoothly on your labeller from the first one. If you are unsure of the size, wrap a paper strip around the container and follow the steps in the product measuring guide for round items.

Print and Finish Options

Digital printing suits short runs and multiple designs, such as a range of flavours or scents. Every label can be different without extra setup, so small brands can launch several products together. For longer runs of a single design, we can quote other print methods that bring the unit cost down.

A gloss laminate gives a shiny, durable surface and makes colours vivid. A matt laminate feels more premium and reduces glare under shop lights. Hot foil, spot varnish and embossing can all be added to BOPP labels for a premium product, and they pair especially well with clear and metallic films.

Variable data, such as batch numbers, dates or individual serial numbers, can be printed directly onto each label in digital runs.

Think about where the label will be handled most. A shower gel bottle is gripped with wet, soapy hands every day, so a durable laminate matters more than a delicate foil. A gin bottle on a back bar is handled less often but seen under bright lighting, which rewards foil and fine detail. Matching the finish to the product's daily life keeps labels looking good until the last drop. Rolls for a labelling machine are described on the roll labels page, including core sizes and wind direction.

Choose the Film From the Surface It Sticks To

Decide the container before the artwork, because the film choice follows from it. Clear BOPP on clear glass or PET gives the no-label look but needs white ink behind every colour. White BOPP on dark bottles or kraft pouches prints brightest and needs no underlay. Metallic BOPP suits a logo-only label on premium jars. Squeezy bottles and anything that flexes need the thinner film so the label does not wrinkle when the bottle is squeezed.

Tell us the container and its material, the label size, how many designs you run and how you apply them, by hand or machine, and we send a quote by email within one working day. The free proof shows the label flat and marks the white ink areas on clear film. Labels are printed in 4 to 7 working days after approval and arrive by tracked courier at no charge to UK mainland addresses; faults reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Jar brands that need a lid label as well usually add round jar lid labels in the same film.

BOPP Labels Questions

What buyers ask before ordering BOPP labels.

Are BOPP labels waterproof?

BOPP film does not absorb water, so it stays intact through condensation, chilling and splashes. Choosing the right adhesive for wet or cold conditions completes the picture.

When should I choose BOPP over paper labels?

Choose BOPP for anything that gets wet, chilled, oily or handled a lot. Paper labels are fine and cheaper for dry goods.

Why do clear labels need white ink?

Coloured inks are translucent on clear film and take on the colour of the product behind. A white layer under the design keeps colours bright.

Will BOPP labels stick to cold bottles?

Use a cold-temperature adhesive for chilled or frozen products. It grips even if the container is cold when labelled.

Can I run six sauce flavours on BOPP labels in one order?

Yes. Flavours that share a size and film print together, so six designs on the same 80 by 60 mm white BOPP label cost close to one design in the same total quantity. Tell us the quantity per flavour and we split the rolls so each flavour arrives separately labelled.

Do BOPP labels work on squeezy bottles?

Yes, with the right film grade. We suggest a flexible film and rounded corners so the label flexes with the bottle.

Can I get labels on rolls for my labelling machine?

Yes. Tell us the core size, maximum roll diameter and unwind direction, and we will wind the rolls to suit.

Do metallic BOPP labels look like foil?

Metallic film gives a mirrored sheen across any unprinted area, which looks similar to foil and can be combined with coloured inks.

Can batch numbers be printed on each label?

Yes, variable data such as batch numbers and dates can be printed in digital runs.

How long do custom BOPP labels take?

Allow 4–7 working days after proof approval for printing and finishing, then 2–3 working days for free tracked mainland UK delivery.
