Custom Lip Balm Labels

from £0.25 a labelPriced per job · low minimums

Custom lip balm labels have to say a lot on a surface not much wider than your thumb. We print wrap-around labels for standard tubes, slim sticks and round tins, sized to the millimetre so the seam lines up and the twist base still turns freely.

A Tiny Label With a Big Job

Lip balm is a pocket product. It lives in coats, handbags and car door pockets, gets rubbed against keys and coins, and is reached for with sticky fingers. A label that peels at the seam or smudges after a week makes even a lovely balm look cheap. That is why the material and the fit matter more here than on almost any other label.

The space is also tight. A standard tube gives you a strip roughly the height of the barrel and just over its circumference, and into that you need a brand name, a flavour, the ingredients list, the net weight and any legal wording. Good lip balm label design works with the curve: the front face carries the brand and flavour, while the information panel wraps round to the back where it is read by turning the tube.

For kitchen-table batches and full flavour ranges alike, we cut labels that fit your exact tubes and print them sharply enough for the small print to stay legible. p1 Makers with a candle line too use the same wrap-around approach on our candle labels page.

Sizing Labels for Tubes, Sticks and Tins

Tubes vary more than people expect. Even two tubes sold as the standard size can differ by a millimetre in diameter, which is enough to leave a gap or an overlap at the seam. The safest method is to measure the circumference with a strip of paper, mark where it meets, and add a small overlap of two or three millimetres. Height should stop short of the twist base and the cap line so neither catches the label edge.

Slim sticks need a narrower, longer label. Round tins take a circular lid label and sometimes a band around the side. Oval and square tubes are possible too; send a sample and we will cut a matching shape. p1 The guide to measuring a product explains circumference on small round items.

Materials That Survive a Pocket

White gloss vinyl is our most requested lip balm label stock. It resists oils, water and handling, and its slightly flexible face hugs a tight curve without lifting at the edges. Clear vinyl lets a coloured tube show through, giving a no-label look that suits minimalist brands. Metallic silver or gold vinyl adds shine for gift ranges.

Paper labels have their place. Uncoated or textured paper suits a natural, hand-poured brand, and kraft paper gives a rustic look. Paper is less resistant to oil, so we usually suggest a laminate over the top if the balm will be carried around rather than sold as a gift. Gloss laminate brightens colours; matt laminate gives a soft, modern finish and is easier to read under shop lighting. p1 Clear and metallic stocks are shown on our vinyl stickers page.

Fitting Ingredients and Legal Wording

Cosmetic products sold in the UK need certain information on the pack, and lip balm is no exception. Most makers include the product name, the net weight, the ingredients in the standard naming format, the responsible person's details, a batch code and a best-before or period-after-opening symbol. That is a lot for a small label, so plan the layout before the creative design.

Keep the ingredients panel to a clean, single-colour block in a font with open letterforms. Very small text prints best in solid black on white rather than a tint or a reversed colour. If space really runs out, part of the information can go on an outer box or a backing card. We check text size on your free proof and point out anything likely to fill in when printed.

Leave a small blank area for the batch code if you write or stamp it by hand. A matt laminate takes a pen mark better than gloss. p2 The same compliance layout appears on our product labels for cosmetics.

Designing a Flavour Range on Small Labels

Most balm brands sell several flavours, and colour is the fastest way to tell them apart on a counter display. A shared template with one colour block that changes per flavour keeps the range consistent while making each one easy to spot. Simple flavour icons, such as a mint leaf or a slice of orange, help too, especially for younger customers and gift shoppers.

Because we print digitally, different flavour designs can be printed in the same run without extra setup, so you can order a mixed batch rather than committing to large quantities of one flavour.

Think about the display too. Many shops sell balm from a small counter box, where customers see only the top third of each tube. Put the flavour colour and name high on the label so they show above the edge of the display, and keep the brand mark close to the cap. If you sell gift sets of three or four flavours, ask us about a matching backing card or a small printed box so the set looks finished rather than bundled. Sample a couple of finishes on your first order if you are unsure; the difference between gloss and matt on a tiny curved label is easier to judge in the hand than on a screen.

Rolls or Sheets for Application

If you label by hand, sheets are easy to manage and store flat in a drawer. If you use a small hand-cranked or semi-automatic applicator, rolls are quicker; tell us the core size and which way the label should unwind so it feeds correctly.

Apply labels at room temperature onto clean, dry tubes. Balm residue on the outside of the barrel stops adhesive bonding, so wipe tubes before labelling, and press the seam firmly at the end. Labelling before filling is easier for some makers, after filling for others; both work as long as the surface is clean. p1 Roll formats are described on our roll labels page.

Wrap a Paper Strip Round the Tube and Mark the Seam

Lip balm tubes that are sold as the same size differ by a millimetre, and on a label this small that is the gap at the seam. Wrap a strip of paper round your actual tube, mark where it meets, measure it flat and add 2 to 3 mm for the overlap; then measure the height between the cap line and the twist base. Send those two figures, the number of flavours and say if you label before or after filling.

Set the ingredients panel in solid black on white before you design the front, because that block decides how much room is left. Choose vinyl for a pocket product and paper only with a laminate. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day, from £0.25 a label, with the minimum set per job so a market stall can mix flavours.

The free proof shows each label on its cutting line with the seam marked. Printing takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the labels reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery. Makers who box a balm for gifts usually add our lip balm cartons with a hang tab in the same print.

Lip Balm Labels Questions

What buyers ask before ordering lip balm labels.

How do I measure my lip balm tube for a label?

Wrap a strip of paper round the barrel, mark where it meets and measure it flat. Add two or three millimetres for overlap. For the height, measure between the cap line and the twist base.

Which material holds up best to handbags and pockets?

White or clear vinyl with a laminate. It resists oil, water and rubbing far better than paper.

Can six lip balm flavours run in one label order?

Yes. We print digitally, so several flavour designs run together in one batch, each in its own quantity, and each is proofed on its own cutting line. Sheets can even mix flavours if you label small batches by hand.

Will the ingredients list be readable at such a small size?

It can be, if it is set in solid black on a light background in a clear font. We check the smallest text on your free proof and flag anything that may fill in.

Do you make clear labels for coloured tubes?

Yes. Clear vinyl lets the tube colour show through. White ink can be printed under coloured areas so they stay bright.

Can you supply labels on rolls for an applicator?

Yes. Tell us the core size and the unwind direction your applicator needs.

Why are my labels peeling at the seam?

Usually because of balm residue on the tube or a label that is too short to overlap. Clean tubes before applying and allow a small overlap.

Can I write batch codes on the label?

Yes. Leave a small blank panel, and choose a matt laminate, which takes ink from a pen or stamp more easily than gloss.

Do you cut labels for tins as well as tubes?

Yes. We cut circular lid labels and side bands for round tins and pots.

How soon could I have labels for a craft fair?

Allow 4–7 working days for production after proof approval, plus 2–3 working days for free tracked UK mainland delivery. Leave a few days spare to apply the labels before the fair opens.

What if a batch prints with an error?

Let us know within 10 days of delivery and we will reprint or refund the affected labels. A quick photo of the error helps us check it against the approved proof.
