Custom Lip Gloss Boxes With Shade Swatches

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom lip gloss boxes are slim cartons cut to the length of a gloss tube, printed so a shopper can see the shade, the finish and your brand before the seal is broken. Indie beauty brands use them to make a small tube look like a finished product on a shelf, in a subscription box or in an unboxing video.

A Tiny Box Doing a Big Job

Lip gloss tubes are narrow and light, and on their own they look much the same as every other tube on a counter. The carton is where a brand builds character. It carries the name, the shade, the finish and the ingredient list, and it protects the wand and cap from being knocked loose in transit. It also gives a gloss priced at a premium the weight it needs to justify that price.

For a start-up, the box is often the first thing a stockist or influencer judges. A well cut carton with clean print and a crisp shade swatch tells them the brand is serious. A loose, generic box suggests the opposite, however good the formula inside.

The box also does practical work. A snug carton stops the wand from twisting open, which is the most common cause of leaking glosses in the post. A tamper-evident seal gives retailers confidence that nothing has been tested and returned. Brands with eyeshadows and palettes as well use our makeup boxes for the full range.

Showing the Shade Before It Is Opened

Shoppers buy gloss by colour, and they hate opening a box to find the shade is not what they expected. There are a few ways to show it on the carton. Shades shown together at the till sit in our cosmetic display boxes for the counter.

  • A printed swatch on the front and end panels, colour-matched to the gloss on the proof.
  • A die-cut window that shows the actual tube, ideal when the tube itself is clear and the product is visible.
  • A colour band or full-colour flood across the box in the shade colour, popular for ranges with bold colours.
  • Shade name and number printed on the end flap, so stock can be read when boxes sit side by side on a shelf.
  • A metallic or holographic swatch for shimmer and glitter glosses, which flat print struggles to show.

Getting the Fit Right for Gloss Tubes

Gloss tubes vary widely. Some are short and chunky with a wide cap, others long and slender, and doe-foot wands come in different lengths. Measure the tube with the cap fitted, at its widest point and its full height. We add only a millimetre or two of clearance so the tube does not rattle, which also stops the box from looking oversized on the shelf.

If the tube has a wide cap and a narrow body, a simple card insert with a hole for the body keeps it centred and upright. For premium sets of two or three glosses, a fitted insert with slots holds each tube separately. Send us a sample tube if you can; it is the quickest way to get a perfect fit first time.

Tubes filled by hand are sometimes slightly taller once the wand is pushed home, so measure a filled, capped tube rather than an empty one from the supplier catalogue.

Board, Print and Finishes for Beauty Shelves

Most lip gloss boxes are made from a smooth white folding board, which takes fine print and accurate colour. For a natural or clean-beauty look, kraft board with white or single-colour print is an option. Rigid boxes are worth considering for gift sets and limited editions, where the box is kept on a dressing table afterwards.

Finishes make a noticeable difference on such a small surface. Soft-touch lamination gives a velvety feel that customers pick up on immediately. Spot gloss on the logo or swatch adds contrast against a matt background. Foil blocking in rose gold, silver or holographic is popular for brand names and shade names. Embossing works well on a logo but needs a little more panel area than you might think, so keep it simple on very slim boxes.

Colour on a small box is unforgiving. A brand pink that looks right on a large poster can look muddy on a narrow panel, so we recommend checking the proof against the gloss itself in daylight before approving.

Range Planning for Indie Brands

Most brands launch with a handful of shades and add more later. Planning the box design as a system makes that easy. Keep one layout and change only the swatch colour, shade name and perhaps the box flood colour for each shade. All shades in the same box size can then print together, which brings the cost per shade down considerably and keeps the range looking consistent.

When you add new shades, send the new swatch colours and names and we will slot them into the existing layout. Keep a physical sample of each existing shade box so new prints can be compared under the same light. If you also sell lip liners or lipsticks, matching cartons in a related size make a counter display look like one brand. Liners sold alongside use our lip liner boxes in the same board.

Labelling Details Beauty Products Need

Cosmetic packaging in the UK has legal labelling requirements, and the box is usually where they live because the tube itself is too small. Leave room for the ingredients list, the responsible person's name and address, the batch number, the period after opening symbol and the net quantity. Your compliance adviser will confirm the exact wording; we simply make sure it fits and is legible.

A batch code area can be left blank and stamped later, or printed per run if each batch has its own box order. A barcode on the base or back panel helps stockists. We check on the proof that small text is not printed below a readable size. Very long ingredient lists sometimes move to ingredient labels for the base.

Post Us a Tube With the Wand Fitted

Gloss tubes are measured with the wand and cap in place, because the cap is often wider than the tube and the box has to clear it. Post us one tube, or measure the cap diameter and the full height closed, and tell us how many shades you sell; one carton size with a swatch panel per shade is the usual answer. Decide if the swatch is printed, which needs a Pantone reference per shade, or shown through a small window, which needs no colour matching at all. Choose the board and the finish next, and plan the legal panel early, because the ingredients list takes more room than most brands expect on a slim carton. Artwork is the master design plus a shade list, sent as vector files, and the free proof shows every shade version flat with folds and glue areas marked. A custom quote comes by email within one working day, minimums are quoted per job for a launch, and cartons are produced in 4 to 7 working days after approval with free tracked UK mainland delivery. Shops with peg walls use our hang tab lipstick boxes for pegs.

Lip Gloss Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering lip gloss boxes.

How accurately can you match the shade swatch?

We match from a Pantone reference or a physical sample as closely as print allows and show it on the proof. Shimmer shades are hard to print flat, so a metallic swatch can help.

Should my gloss box have a window?

A window works well when the tube is clear and the colour is visible. For opaque tubes, a printed swatch is more useful to shoppers.

Can all my shades print in one run?

Yes, if they share a box size. We change the swatch, shade name and colour flood for each version and print them together, which keeps the price per shade down.

Will the box stop the gloss leaking in the post?

A snug carton stops the cap twisting loose, which is the main cause of leaks. For extra security, add a card insert or a small seal sticker.

Is there room for the legal labelling?

Yes. We lay out ingredients, responsible person, batch and period after opening symbols on the side and back panels and check the text is legible on the proof.

Which finish makes a small gloss box feel premium?

Soft-touch lamination with a foil logo is the usual combination on a slim carton. A spot gloss on the swatch adds contrast against the matt background and makes the shade read as wet. Keep foil lines bold because the box is small.

Can you make hang tab boxes for peg displays?

Yes. A hang tab with a euro slot lets stockists hang glosses on display pegs. Tell us if your stockists need this.

Can I order gift sets of two or three glosses?

Yes. We make cartons and rigid boxes with fitted inserts that hold each tube separately for gift sets and launch collections.

Do you need a sample tube?

It helps a great deal. Gloss tubes vary, and a sample lets us fit the box perfectly the first time. Measurements with the cap on also work.

Can I add new shades later in the same design?

Yes. We keep your layout on file and add new shade versions to a future run, so the range stays consistent as it grows.

What is the smallest order for a new launch?

Minimums are low and quoted per job, so a first collection of a few shades is very achievable. Ask for a custom quote with your quantities.
