What a Counter Display Does for a Beauty Brand
Most beauty products are bought on impulse rather than from a list. A lipstick shade catches someone's eye while they wait to pay, a mini serum looks like an easy add-on, a nail colour matches the outfit they are wearing. A counter display box exists to be in that spot, at eye level and within reach, with the product facing forwards and the brand name printed big enough to read from a step away.
Shelf space in a salon, pharmacy or boutique is tight, and owners say yes to displays that look tidy and take up little room. A well-made unit with a clean header and neat compartments is far easier to place than a loose tray of stock. It also does the selling when staff are busy, because the product, price point and brand story are all printed on the card in front of the customer.
For an independent brand pitching to stockists, a printed display is often the difference between a buyer taking a trial order and passing. It shows the product has been thought through as a retail line, not just as something sold online.
Choosing a Display Style
The right shape depends on the product's height and how many units the retailer wants out at once. These are the formats we make most often for beauty lines: Bath products sold the same way are shown on the bath bomb display boxes for counters page.
- Tear-away lid display: ships as a closed carton, then the top tears off along a perforation to leave an open tray with a raised back panel. Good for lip balms and polishes that arrive at a shop ready to go straight on the counter.
- Stepped display: two or three tiers so the back row sits higher than the front, which suits tall items such as mascaras and lip gloss wands.
- Header card display: a flat tray with a tall printed backboard carrying your logo and a short message. The backboard can be die-cut to a custom shape.
- Display with an insert: a card insert with cut-outs holds each tube or bottle upright and stops units falling over as shoppers pull from the front.
- Lidded display: a tuck lid closes the unit between shifts or protects stock in transit, then folds back behind the header during trading hours.

Sizing Cosmetic Display Boxes Around the Product
Start with one finished unit in its own packaging, if it has any. Measure the widest point and the height, then decide how many rows and columns the retailer needs. A lipstick in its own carton might need a 22 mm square cell; a nail polish bottle often needs closer to 35 mm. Allow a millimetre or two of clearance per cell so units lift out without the insert tearing.
Next, think about the front lip. A low front, around a third of the product height, shows off the shades while still stopping things sliding out. For minis and sachets that lie flat, a deeper tray with a sloping front works better.
Finally, check the counter. Many retailers have only the space beside a card machine to spare, so a compact footprint with a tall header usually beats a wide, low tray. If you know the stockist, ask them for the space they can give you before we quote. Gloss tubes and small sticks use the tray sizes from our lip gloss boxes and display trays.
Board, Print and Finish
Most counter units are made from a stiff folding boxboard, often with a white surface for bright colour reproduction. For heavier glass bottles or a deep tray, we suggest E-flute corrugated with a printed white liner; it is a little thicker but holds its shape under weight and survives being moved between shelves.
Print is full colour throughout, so shade swatches, model photography and ingredient callouts all reproduce well. Beauty buyers notice finishing, so think about where it pays off. A soft-touch matt lamination gives a velvety feel and hides fingerprints. Spot gloss on the logo picks it out under shop lighting. Foil blocking in gold, rose gold or silver works well on a header, but keep it to a few key elements so the display does not look busy.
The inside of the tray can be printed too. A block colour or a subtle pattern inside the compartments looks finished when stock runs low, rather than showing bare grey board.
If your products already sit in printed cartons, match the display to them rather than inventing a new look. Use the same brand colours, the same typeface and the same finish, so the counter unit and the products inside read as one family. A display that clashes with its own stock looks like an afterthought, whereas a matched set makes a small brand look established on a crowded counter.
Getting the Artwork Right for Retail
A display is read in two seconds, so the header should carry three things at most: your brand name, what the product is and one reason to pick it up. Long ingredient lists belong on the individual product packaging, not the display.
Leave space for a price sticker if the shop sets its own prices, and add a barcode panel on the outer carton if the unit is ordered as a single stock line. If you sell through several retailers, a neutral design without shop-specific wording means one print run can serve them all.
We send a flat proof showing every panel and fold line. Check it with a real product in hand: confirm the shade names line up with the right cells and that nothing important falls onto a crease.
Ask the Stockist for Their Counter Space First
The best cosmetic display is the one a retailer actually puts out, so before we size anything, ask your main stockist how much counter space they can give you. A footprint of 150 x 120 mm with a header up to 200 mm tall is accepted almost everywhere; a wider tray gets moved to a lower shelf. Then count the units you want on show, usually 12 to 24, measure one product including its cap, and send both numbers with the style you prefer.
A custom quote comes by email within one working day, with minimums quoted per job so a limited shade range or a new stockist can be tested with a short run. The free proof shows the die-cut front, the header and the insert together. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval, displays ship flat on free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days, and any that arrive misprinted or damaged are reprinted or refunded if reported within 10 days. Polishes that need a fitted insert are covered on the nail polish boxes with bottle inserts page.

Cosmetic Display Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering cosmetic display boxes.
How many lipsticks can one cosmetic display box hold?
That depends on the footprint the retailer can spare and the size of your lipstick cartons. A compact counter tray usually holds two rows, but we can design deeper or wider units. Send us one product and the space available and we will lay out the cells for you.
Will the display stand up to glass nail polish bottles?
Yes, if the board is chosen for the weight. For glass bottles we often suggest E-flute corrugated or a doubled-up base, plus an insert that holds each bottle in its own cell so they do not knock together.
Can the display ship to the shop already filled?
It can. A tear-away lid style closes fully for transit, so you can pack it with stock, ship it and let the retailer tear off the top on arrival. Make sure your outer shipping carton is sized to fit the closed display.
Can the header card on a lipstick display follow the shape of the logo?
Yes. The header is die-cut, so it can follow a logo outline, a product silhouette or a simple arch, as long as the shape keeps enough board at the base to stand up. The cut line is drawn on the proof so you can see it before anything is made.
Is it possible to print inside the compartments?
Yes, the inside of the tray can be printed in full colour. Many brands use a block of their brand colour so the display still looks smart when it is half empty.
What finish works best under shop lighting?
Soft-touch matt cuts glare and feels premium, while a spot gloss on the logo catches bright spotlights. Foil blocking catches light well but is best kept to the logo and a few words.
Can I order one design for several different stockists?
Yes, and it is usually the most cost-effective approach. Keep the artwork brand-led rather than shop-specific and leave a blank area for each retailer's own price sticker.
Do you make displays for sachets and sheet masks?
We do. Flat items work best in a deeper tray with a sloping front so shoppers can flick through them. Tell us the sachet size and how many you want visible and we will size the tray.
How quickly can I get displays for a stockist launch?
After you approve the free proof, production takes 4 to 7 working days and tracked UK mainland delivery takes 2 to 3 working days. Get in touch early if the stockist has given you a fixed date.
What happens if a display arrives damaged?
Let us know within 10 days with a photo and we will reprint or refund the affected units. Displays are shipped flat in protective outer cartons to keep corners crisp.
How much do cosmetic display boxes cost?
Prices start from £0.25 a unit for simple boxes, with displays priced on size, board and finish. Send us your details and we will email a custom quote within one working day.
