Most lotion cartons are made from white folding boxboard, which gives clean, bright colour and crisp folds. A slightly heavier board suits tall pump bottles, which put more weight on the base. Kraft board suits natural and botanical brands, especially with dark or white print.

Lotion bottles can be greasy on the outside after filling, so a coating or laminate on the box helps prevent marks from transferring. Soft-touch laminate gives a velvety finish that feels luxurious, and matt laminate gives a calm, understated look. Gloss makes colours vivid and suits playful or fruity scents.

Foil stamping, embossing and spot gloss are popular on lotion boxes. A foil logo on soft-touch board is one of the most effective ways to lift a simple design without adding colour.

Lay out the box so each panel has a clear job. The front carries the brand name, product name and a short benefit, such as the scent or skin type. One side panel holds the ingredients list in a readable size. The other side or the back carries directions, warnings, net contents, the batch code area and your responsible person's details.

Correct cosmetic labelling is your responsibility, and we print exactly what you supply and approve. We will flag any text that looks too small to read comfortably once printed. If your batch codes change often, leave a blank area for a stamp or sticker.

Protecting the Pump

Pump bottles are the most common source of leaks and damage in transit. If the pump is pressed while the box is squeezed, lotion leaks into the carton. A card insert that holds the pump head clear of the lid, or a locking collar supplied with the bottle, prevents this.

Sizing the box closely to the bottle also helps, because a bottle that slides around is more likely to knock its pump against the lid. Tell us if your pumps lock and send the bottle height with the pump in its tallest position.

Twist-lock pumps should be locked before boxing, and a short note on the carton reminding customers to unlock them saves frustrated first uses. For bottles sent by post, a lotion box with a pump insert keeps the pump clear of the lid.

Building a Range That Grows With You

Most skincare brands start with one or two lotions and add more within a few months: a hand cream, an unscented version, a larger size for regular customers. Packaging that was designed for a single product can become awkward when the range grows, so it pays to plan a system from the beginning.

Decide which elements stay fixed and which change. Fixing the logo position, typeface, layout of the ingredients panel and the overall shape of the box gives the range consistency. Box sizes can follow the same logic. If your standard and pump bottles share a footprint, the cartons can share a width and differ only in height, which keeps shelves tidy and makes it easier to design matching display trays later. Think about price points too. A travel size in a simple tuck-end carton and a full size in a sleeve and tray box can sit side by side, telling customers which is the everyday option and which is the treat.

Measure the Pump at Its Tallest and Decide Where the Ingredients Go

Lotion cartons are sized from the pump, so measure the bottle with the pump fitted and fully extended, plus the width and depth at the widest point. If the pump locks, say so, because a locked pump sits lower and the carton can be shorter. Then plan the ingredients panel: a 200 ml carton has room on the back and one side, and we flag text that looks too small to read on the proof. Many brands keep one carton layout and change a colour band per scent, which keeps reorders simple, and gift sets with two bottles move to a lotion box with a fitted insert.
