Custom Makeup Boxes for Kits, Palettes and Gift Sets
A makeup set lives or dies on the moment the lid comes off, and custom makeup boxes are built for exactly that moment. We make printed kit boxes, palette cartons and rigid gift boxes with inserts cut to hold every lipstick, compact and brush in its place.

Why a Makeup Kit Needs Its Own Box
Single lipsticks and mascaras usually ship in small tuck cartons, and they are covered elsewhere in our cosmetic range. This page is about the bigger pack: the box that groups several items into a set, a palette that needs a slim sleeve, or a launch kit sent to makeup artists and stockists. Those boxes carry more weight, hold mixed shapes and are often kept long after the products are used.
That last point shapes the design. A customer who buys a gift set at the counter, or receives a PR kit in the post, will judge the brand by how the box opens, how firmly each item sits and how the inside looks. Loose products sliding around a plain carton undo a lot of careful product design, while a well cut insert makes even a modest set look generous.
Think, too, about where the box will be opened. A counter gift set is unwrapped at home in good light, so detail inside the lid gets noticed. A PR kit is often opened on camera, which means the first view from above matters most: the insert, the top layer of tissue and any printed card all appear in that shot. Planning those layers early saves changes later.
Box Styles for Different Makeup Sets
The style depends on how the set will be sold. Retail gift sets that stand on a shelf suit a rigid two-piece box or a box with a window lid. Sets sold online and posted direct usually work better in a printed mailer with an insert, because it survives the courier and still opens nicely. Thin eyeshadow palettes often go into a sleeve over a tray, which keeps the depth low and lets the palette slide out like a drawer.
- Rigid lid and base boxes for premium gift sets
- Magnetic closure book boxes that open like a cover
- Drawer boxes with a printed outer sleeve for palettes

Inserts That Hold Every Piece
The insert does the real work in a makeup box. Card inserts are die cut with slots shaped to each product, then folded so the items sit at the right height. They print in the same colours as the box and keep costs sensible. Foam inserts cut to the outline of each product give a snugger grip, which suits glass foundation bottles and heavier compacts. Rigid boxes can take a covered board platform with recesses, which looks the most finished.
To cut an insert accurately we need the real dimensions of each item, including any caps or lids at their widest point. If you can post a sample set, we measure it ourselves and build the insert around it. Leave a small finger notch beside items that sit deep, so customers can lift them out without tipping the box. Pocket depths and finger notches are drawn the same way as the card and foam inserts we cut.
Materials and Board Weights
Folding carton kit boxes are made from white SBS board, which gives clean, bright print. Rigid boxes use thick greyboard wrapped in printed paper or a coloured stock, and they feel solid in the hand. Mailer style kit boxes use corrugated board with a printed white or kraft liner, which is the safer choice for anything going through the post.
Weight is easy to underestimate. A set with a glass foundation, a metal compact and a few lipsticks adds up, and a thin carton base will bow if the box is lifted from one end. We suggest a board for each job when we quote, and we can price two options side by side if you want to compare the difference.
Rigid boxes also arrive made up rather than flat, so they take more storage room and cost more to ship per unit. If space is tight, a collapsible rigid box that folds flat and snaps open on magnets is worth asking about.
Print and Finishes That Suit Beauty Brands
Makeup packaging leans on finish more than most categories. Soft touch lamination gives a matt, slightly velvety surface that feels expensive and shows colour softly. Gloss lamination makes darker shades look deep and glassy. Foil stamping in gold, rose gold, silver or holographic is common on lids, and embossing a logo gives a texture customers notice with their fingertips.
Spot UV over a matt base is a quieter option: a pattern or product name picked out in gloss against a soft background. Many brands print the inside of the lid too, with a short message or the shade names in the set, so the opening view feels designed rather than accidental. Ask for this when you request your custom quote, because it affects the print layout.
Getting the Shade Story Right
Colour accuracy matters more in makeup than almost anywhere else, because the box often shows the shades inside. Printed swatches will never match a pigment perfectly, but they can come close if you supply Pantone references or physical samples. Your free design proof lets you check layout, wording and finish placement before anything is printed, and we flag any colours that are likely to shift on the board you have chosen.
If a set comes in several shade variants, keep one box structure and change only the printed panel or a small label. That keeps tooling simple and lets you add new shades later without a new insert.
Confirm Every Component Before the Insert Is Cut
A makeup kit box is only as good as its insert, and the insert can only be cut once the components are final. Collect one of every item in the set, including the brush with the longest handle and the compact with the thickest hinge, and send them to us or send measurements of each. If a shade or a brush is still being sourced, wait, because a swapped component a few millimetres larger will not sit in a pocket cut for the old one. Mark which items should face up through tissue and which can sit deeper.
Send the item list, the style you have in mind and a rough quantity, and a custom quote comes by email within one working day, followed by a dieline and a free proof. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval, delivery is free and tracked to UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days, and minimums are quoted per job so a limited edition can be a short run. Misprints or damage reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Single lashes and small accessories sold beside the kit use the eyelash boxes with clear windows.

Makeup Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering makeup boxes.
Can you make one insert that holds a palette, a lipstick and a brush?
Yes. Mixed sets are the most common job for this box. We need the dimensions of each item at its widest point, and we cut a slot for each one so they sit level. A sample set posted to us gives the most accurate fit.
Which insert is best for glass foundation bottles?
Foam or a covered board platform grips glass better than a plain card slot. Card can still work for lighter bottles if the slot is tight and the box is not posted. We will suggest an option once we know how the set is sold.
Can a makeup box have a mirror inside the lid?
A mirror-finish card panel can be fixed inside the lid of a rigid box. It is reflective rather than a true glass mirror, but it adds a nice touch to gift sets. Ask for it when you request your custom quote.
Will the printed shade swatches match my products?
Print will come close but not exactly match a pigment, especially for shimmer shades. Supplying Pantone references helps. We flag likely shifts on the proof so you can adjust before printing.
What box works for a PR kit sent by post?
A printed corrugated mailer with a fitted insert is the safest option. It protects the products in transit and still opens with a reveal. A tissue wrap or a printed card on top finishes the presentation.
Can I use one box for several shade variants?
Yes. Keep the structure and insert the same, then change the printed design or add a shade label. Each design gets its own proof, and the quantity split is reflected in your quote.
Is a magnetic closure worth it for makeup sets?
For gift sets that customers keep, a magnetic book box feels premium and reopens neatly many times. For lower priced sets, a lid and base box gives a similar look at less cost. We can quote both.
Can you print inside the box as well?
Yes, the inside of the lid and the insert can both be printed. Brands often use it for shade names, a thank you note or social handles. It is quoted alongside the outer print.
What finish hides fingerprints best?
Soft touch and matt laminations show fewer marks than gloss, though very dark soft touch boxes can still show oily fingerprints. A mid-tone colour with soft touch is a good balance for counter testers.
How long does a makeup gift box take?
Production runs 4–7 working days after proof approval, and rigid boxes with foam inserts sit at the longer end. Free tracked UK mainland delivery then takes 2–3 working days.
Can I see the insert layout before production?
Your free design proof includes the insert layout with each slot labelled, so you can check positions and sizes. If anything looks tight, we adjust it before cutting.
