Custom Counter Display Boxes
Custom counter display boxes are open-front cartons that sit beside the till, holding a row of snacks, lip balms, keyrings or sachets where shoppers see them in the final moments of a purchase. They arrive flat, fold into shape in seconds and carry your branding on a raised header card that catches the eye across the shop.

The Last Shelf Before the Sale
The counter is the most valuable shelf in any shop. Every customer passes it, waits at it and looks around while paying. Small items that would be lost on a wide shelf, such as a lip balm, a chocolate bar, a keyring or a pack of gum, become impulse buys when placed in a tidy, branded display right by the till. That is what counter display boxes are for.
For a brand, a counter display is often the way into a shop. A retailer may not have shelf space for a full range, but will happily find room for a compact display box that adds a few extra sales each day. For the retailer, a well-designed box that keeps stock tidy and looks good saves effort and adds margin.
Counter displays are also a good test of a product. A brand can place a display in a handful of shops for a few weeks and see how quickly it empties, which gives real sales data before investing in larger retail packaging or a full shelf range.
How a Counter Display Is Built
Most counter display boxes are cut from one sheet of board. The front tears away or folds down to reveal the products, and the back panel folds up into a header card that stands above them. Some styles ship as a closed carton with a tear-off perforated lid, so the box travels as a shipper and becomes a display when opened. Others are delivered flat and folded up in the shop.
Shipper styles are popular with wholesalers because the retailer does not have to unpack and arrange anything. They open the lid, fold up the header and place the box on the counter, which takes seconds and means your display is far more likely to be put out rather than left in the stockroom. Trays without a header are covered on our PDQ display trays page.

Products That Suit Counter Display Boxes
The best counter products are small, low-priced and easy to grab. Snack bars, chocolate, sweets, mints and gum are the classic examples. Lip balms, hand creams, nail files and travel-size toiletries sell well at pharmacy and salon counters. Keyrings, badges, stickers, lighters and phone accessories suit newsagents and gift shops. Sachets of coffee, tea or sauces work well in cafés and delis.
If your product is new, a counter display is a good way to introduce it, because shoppers can pick one up without committing to a larger purchase.
Ask the retailer what sells beside the till already, and design your display to sit comfortably next to it. Single items that hang rather than stand suit our hang tab boxes with a window instead.
Sizing Your Display
Counters are small, so the display needs to be compact. A typical footprint is around 150 to 250 mm wide and 100 to 200 mm deep. Decide how many units you want in the display, how they stand, upright, lying flat or angled, and how many rows you need. Measure one unit, multiply by the layout and add the wall thickness and a little clearance.
Header cards usually rise 80 to 150 mm above the back wall. Taller headers are more visible but can get in the way at a busy till, so keep them proportionate. If the display is going into chain stores, ask about any size limits for counter units before finalising.
Angle matters too. A tray whose base slopes slightly toward the shopper shows the products more clearly and makes the next unit slide forward when one is taken. We can build a gentle slope into the base for products that lie flat, such as snack bars or sachet packs. For a bigger footprint on the shop floor, our larger printed display boxes use the same construction.
Designing for a Glance
Shoppers look at a counter display for a second or two, so the design has to work at a glance. The header should carry the brand and a short, clear message: a product name, a flavour, a benefit or the price point, if the retailer agrees. The front lip of the tray can repeat the brand or carry a small call to action. The inside walls, seen once the products are taken, can show a pattern in your brand colour so the box still looks tidy when half empty.
Bold colour, large type and simple imagery work best. Fine details and long sentences are lost at a till.
Remember the retailer's view. A display that shows the product name and a reorder code on its side helps shop staff note when stock is low and order more from you, rather than replacing your display with someone else's. The same quick-read rules apply to display trays with a cut-out front.
- Header: brand name and one short message
- Front lip: product name or a call to action
- Inside walls: brand colour or pattern
- Sides: product details for the retailer
Board and Strength
Light products such as lip balms and keyrings sit happily in 350 to 400 gsm folding boxboard. Heavier products like chocolate bars or snack packs need E-flute corrugated, which keeps the tray from sagging and the header from bending. Corrugated also survives being shipped full, which matters for shipper-style displays.
A gloss or matt lamination protects the print from handling and spills on a busy counter. Plain kraft displays with one or two colour print suit natural and artisan brands.
If the display stands near a coffee machine or a sink, a laminated finish helps it shrug off splashes and stay presentable for longer. Board choices are compared on our board and finish options page.
Ordering Displays for Your Stockists
Send us the product size, the number of units per display, the style you want and your artwork. Within one working day you receive a custom quote by email, followed by a free design proof showing the flat layout and the assembled display. Production takes 4–7 working days after approval, and displays ship flat on free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses.
Any misprinted or damaged displays reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Minimums are low and quoted per job, which makes it easy to test a display with a handful of stockists before rolling it out more widely.
Many brands order displays alongside their retail cartons, so the products and the display share the same design and arrive together for a launch.

Counter Display Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering counter display boxes.
What is a counter display box?
It is an open-front carton that sits on a shop counter holding small products. It usually has a raised header card for branding. It encourages impulse buys at the till.
How big should a counter display be?
Most are around 150 to 250 mm wide and 100 to 200 mm deep. Counters are busy, so compact is best. We size it to your product and unit count.
Can the display be shipped with products inside?
Yes, shipper displays travel as a closed carton and become a display when the perforated lid is torn away. They are usually made in corrugated for strength. They save the retailer setup time.
What board should I use for chocolate bars?
E-flute corrugated keeps the tray from sagging under heavier products. Folding boxboard suits light items like lip balms. We advise based on your product weight.
What should go on the header card?
The brand name and one short message, such as the product name or a key benefit. Keep it bold and simple. Shoppers only glance at it for a second or two.
Can I add dividers?
Yes, dividers keep single units upright and tidy. They help the display look neat when partly empty. We size them to your product.
Can I have a tiered display?
Yes, stepped tiers show two or three rows of products at different heights. They suit mixed ranges and flavours. We design the steps around your products.
Do displays come assembled?
Most ship flat and fold up in seconds. Shipper displays arrive packed and closed if you fill them yourself before sending to stockists. We include a simple folding guide.
Can I print inside the tray?
Yes, a printed inside in your brand colour keeps the display looking good when half empty. It goes through the press with the outside print. It adds very little cost.
Can I test a display with a few stockists first?
Yes. Minimums are low and quoted per job, so a small trial run is practical. When the trial goes well, the approved display can be rerun as it is.
Which finish survives a busy counter?
Gloss or matt lamination protects the print from handling and small spills. Gloss makes colours pop under shop lighting. Matt reduces glare.
