Custom Pop-Up Display Boxes for Shop Counters

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom pop-up display boxes ship closed like an ordinary carton, then open so the lid folds back and stands up as a printed header card above the products. Brands use them to win a spot by the till, where a small sign and a neat row of products can sell far more than a shelf further back.

How a Pop-Up Display Works

The idea is simple. Your products are packed into a counter tray at the factory or warehouse. The lid is scored and perforated so that, once the shop opens the box, the lid folds back on itself and locks upright behind the products. The inside of the lid, which was hidden during shipping, is printed with your branding and message. In seconds, a shipping carton becomes a counter display.

Shop staff appreciate this because there is nothing to assemble and no separate sign to find. Brands appreciate it because the display arrives exactly as designed, with the products in the right order and the message facing the customer, instead of depending on whoever unpacks it to arrange things properly.

Because everything is printed and cut in one piece, the cost stays close to that of a standard printed carton. There is no separate stand, no plastic clip and no assembly instructions to lose.

The same approach works for products sold by the unit and products sold in multi-packs. As stock sells through, the empty tray stays tidy and the header keeps working right down to the last item, which is not true of loose stock piled on a counter.

Where These Boxes Earn Their Keep

Pop-up displays shine anywhere a customer pauses with money in hand and a moment to look around. Products that sit beside the till permanently use our counter display boxes for the till.

  • Till points in independent shops, cafés, farm shops and garden centres.
  • Pharmacy counters for lip balms, hand creams and travel-size products.
  • Bar and hotel reception counters for snacks, mints and branded merchandise.
  • Trade show stands where a small stock of samples needs a tidy, branded base.
  • Launch campaigns where a new product needs to be seen before it earns a shelf position.

Designing the Header Card

The header is the reason the box exists, so spend most of your design effort here. It has to be readable from a few steps away and understood in a second or two. Lead with the product name or a short benefit, add your logo and leave it there. If you need to mention a price, put it on the front lip of the tray where it sits beside the product, not in the header.

Height matters too. A header that stands too tall can block the till screen or the card reader, and staff will fold it down. Ask the stockist if there is a height limit, or keep the header around the same height as the products below it. A die-cut shape, such as the outline of your logo or product, makes the header more noticeable than a plain rectangle and costs little more.

Write the header for someone who has never heard of you. Inside jokes and clever wordplay that make sense on your website may mean nothing to a stranger in a queue. A plain description of what the product is often outsells a slogan. Varnish and lamination are compared in our finishes compared under shop lighting guide.

Sizing the Tray to Your Products

Start with the product and how many you want on display. Lay them out in rows as you would want them seen, measure the footprint and add a little clearance so staff can lift the front row out easily. Products should stand slightly below the front lip so they do not topple forward, but high enough that the packaging is visible.

Counter space in small shops is precious. A tray that is too wide simply will not be accepted, so keep the footprint modest. Narrow, deep trays fit better beside a till than wide, shallow ones. If you are sending a mix of products or flavours, internal dividers keep each row separate and stop one line taking over the box. Our method for measuring products for a tray covers the gap between rows.

Board Strength and Shipping

Because the box doubles as the shipper, it needs to be strong enough to travel. For light products such as lip balms or sachets, a heavy folding board works. For heavier products, glass jars or anything shipped in quantity, an E-flute corrugated board gives the strength needed while still printing well.

Several pop-up displays usually travel together inside a plain outer carton. We can make that outer too, sized so the displays fit snugly without crushing. The perforations on the lid must be strong enough to survive the journey but easy for staff to tear, and we test this balance on the sample stage for larger orders.

Print Inside and Out

A pop-up display has three faces that matter: the outside, which works as a shipping carton and may carry product codes and handling instructions; the inside of the lid, which becomes the header; and the front and inner walls of the tray, which face the customer. Full-colour print on the inside surfaces is what makes the display come alive, so make sure your quote covers inside print.

Matt finishes reduce glare under shop lighting, while a gloss varnish makes colours look richer. For a long-running counter display, a light laminate protects against scuffs from hands and bags.

Remember the outside of the box is seen first by the shop owner, not the shopper. A clean outer print that names the product and shows the display assembled helps staff understand what to do with it and makes it more likely to end up beside the till. Shelf-ready trays for larger retailers are our PDQ display trays for supermarkets.

Send a Display to Three Shops Before You Order for Thirty

Pop-up displays are won or lost at the till, so the sensible first order is a pilot: a short run sent to a handful of stockists, with a note asking what they thought of the size, the header wording and how it sat on their counter. Low minimums are quoted per job, so a pilot of ten or twenty is practical, and the feedback usually changes the header before the wider run. To get there, tell us the product size, the number per display and how the displays ship, because the tray and the header are drawn from those. Decide whether the header is a rectangle or a die-cut shape and whether the inside of the lid prints. Artwork is the header, the tray and the outer, sent as vector files, and the free proof shows the box closed and popped up. A custom quote comes by email within one working day, and displays are made in 4 to 7 working days after approval with free tracked UK mainland delivery. Press and influencer kits that open the same way are on our display mailer boxes for PR page.

Pop-Up Display Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering Pop-Up display boxes.

Do shop staff need to assemble the display?

No. They open the box, fold the lid back along the score and it locks upright as a header. It takes a few seconds.

How tall should the header card be?

Tall enough to be seen, but not so tall it blocks the till screen or card reader. Around the height of the products below it is a good starting point.

Can the display carry a price?

You can print one, but it is better on the front lip of the tray than the header. Many brands leave it off so stockists can set their own price.

Is the display strong enough to ship products in?

Yes, when the right board is chosen. Folding board suits light products, and E-flute corrugated suits heavier items or jars.

Can the header be a custom shape?

Yes, a die-cut header shaped like your logo or product draws more attention than a rectangle and adds little to the cost. Keep narrow points at least 10 mm wide so the header stands up straight. We draw the shape on the proof.

Can I mix flavours in one display?

Yes. Internal dividers keep each flavour in its own row so they stay neat as stock sells through.

Do you make outer cartons for shipping several displays?

Yes. We size plain or printed outer cartons so multiple displays travel together without crushing.

Can I test the display with a few shops first?

Yes. Minimums are low and quoted per job, so a pilot run to test size and wording with stockists is practical.

What finish works best under shop lights?

Matt finishes reduce glare and keep the header readable. A spot gloss on the logo adds highlights without the whole display shining.

Will the perforations tear in transit?

They are cut to hold during shipping and tear easily by hand at the shop. The balance between the two is set on the sample, and for larger orders we check it before the run. Tell us if the displays travel on a pallet or by parcel courier.

Do I need to pay for inside print?

Inside print is what turns the lid into a sign, so it is part of most pop-up display quotes. We list it clearly in your custom quote.
