Custom Retail Display Boxes
Custom retail display boxes arrive at a shop as a closed shipping carton, then open along a tear line into a printed display that goes straight onto the shelf. We design them around your product and the retailer's shelf, print your branding and send a free proof before production.

From Stockroom to Shelf in One Move
Shop staff are busy. When a delivery arrives, every product that has to be unpacked, priced and arranged by hand takes time they do not have. A retail display box, sometimes called a shelf-ready or retail-ready pack, removes most of that work. The carton travels sealed, is carried to the shelf, the front or top is torn away, and the product is already standing in neat rows behind a printed front panel.
Retailers like it because it cuts handling time and keeps shelves tidy. Brands like it because their product appears on the shelf exactly as they intended, grouped together, facing forward and framed by their own branding rather than scattered between competitors.
For smaller brands supplying independent shops, farm shops, pharmacies or gift shops, a display box can also be the difference between getting a listing and not. A product that arrives display-ready is easier for a shop owner to say yes to.
Food and drink brands use them for snacks, confectionery, sauces and bottled drinks. Health and beauty brands use them for lip balms, hand creams and supplements in pharmacies. Gift and stationery brands use them for cards, notebooks and small gifts at tills.
Toy and accessory brands use countertop displays and peg boxes, and wholesalers use display boxes to supply multiple independent shops with a consistent look. A unit that stays on the counter and is refilled is covered under product display boxes for counters.
Shelf-Ready Formats
The right format depends on the product, the retailer and how the box will be opened.
Your retailer may have specific requirements for shelf-ready packaging, such as tear-line positions or carton sizes. It is worth asking before the design is finalised. Trays without a header are shown on the PDQ display trays for supermarket shelves page.
- Tear-off front: a perforated front panel removes to expose products in a tray.
- Tear-off lid: the top section lifts away, leaving a tray with a printed header.
- Display tray with header: an open tray with a raised back card, packed inside a separate outer.
- Pop-up display: folds flat and pops up into a stepped display for counters.
- Countertop dispenser: a box with a front opening for pulling single items out one at a time.
- Hanging display strip box: a box that holds clip strips or hanging products for peg displays.

Strength for the Journey and the Shelf
A retail display box has two jobs that pull in different directions. As a shipping carton, it must survive being stacked on pallets, loaded into vans and carried through stockrooms. As a display, it must look neat and open cleanly. The board and construction have to balance both.
Most are made from corrugated board, usually E-flute or B-flute, which gives good stacking strength with a smooth printing surface. Heavy products such as jars or bottles may need a stronger board or double-wall corrugate. The tear line is engineered with perforations that hold firmly in transit but tear cleanly by hand, with no need for a knife.
Inside, dividers or a shaped tray can hold products upright and separate, so they do not fall over when the front is removed. For fragile products, dividers also prevent knocks in transit. Flute grades for a stacked pallet are compared in the board and card types guide.
Printing Retail Display Boxes With Logo
The printed areas you see on the shelf are usually the front lip of the tray, the header card and the sides. These need bold, simple branding that reads from a few metres away: logo, product name and one key message. Busy designs and small text get lost in a shop aisle.
The outer parts that are torn away can carry practical information for the stockroom: product codes, quantities, handling instructions and orientation arrows. Keeping this separate from the display panels means the shopper never sees it.
Printing can be direct onto corrugated board for bold, simple designs, or on a laminated printed sheet bonded to the board for photographic or detailed artwork. We will recommend the best method for your design on the custom quote.
Designing Around the Shelf
Before sizing the box, find out where it will sit. Shelf depth and height vary widely between shops, and a display that is too tall or too deep will not fit, however good it looks. Ask your main retailers for their shelf dimensions or measure a typical shelf yourself.
Then decide how many units go in each display. Too many makes the box heavy and slow to sell through; too few means constant restocking. Many brands choose a quantity that sells through in a week or two in a typical shop.
Finally, think about how the display looks half-empty. Stepped trays and angled fronts keep remaining products visible as stock sells, so the display still looks inviting.
Weight is the last check. A full display has to be lifted onto the shelf by one person, often above shoulder height, so keep it comfortable to handle and add hand holes on larger cartons. Our guide to measuring products for packaging covers tray depth against shelf depth.
Pitching to Shops With a Display Ready
For a small brand, the first conversation with a buyer is often about practicalities rather than flavour or design. Where will it go? How much space does it take? How quickly does it sell? Arriving with a sample display box answers most of those questions before they are asked, because the buyer can see the footprint, the number of units and how it will look on their counter.
Bring one made up and filled with real product, and one flat so the buyer can see how it arrives. Point out how the tear line works and how the display still looks tidy when half the stock has gone. Buyers at independent shops are often the same people who will open the box and restock the shelf, so showing them it saves time is persuasive.
Think about the opening order too. Many brands offer a first order of a set number of displays, with a reorder card tucked inside each one or printed on the back of the header. When the display empties, the shop owner has your details in their hand at exactly the right moment. A header that lifts as the display opens is shown on the pop-up display boxes with header cards page.
Ask the Retailer for Their Shelf-Ready Rules
Supermarkets and larger chains have written rules for shelf-ready packaging: the tear line position, the maximum carton height, the hand-hole size, even which face the barcode sits on. Ask the buyer for that document before the design starts, because a display that breaks one rule is sent back at the depot. Then measure the product, decide the units per display and send the shelf depth and height if you have them, so the tray is sized to the space rather than to the product alone.
A custom quote reaches you by email within one working day, with minimums kept low and quoted job by job. The free proof shows the box flat with tear lines, folds and print areas marked. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the boxes arrive flat on free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days; damaged or misprinted boxes reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Smaller independents that want a display without a tear line use the counter display boxes for independent shops.

Retail Display Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering retail display boxes.
What is a shelf-ready display box?
It is a shipping carton that opens along a tear line into a display, so products go straight onto the shelf without being unpacked by hand.
Will the tear line open accidentally in transit?
No. The perforations are set to hold firmly on a pallet but tear cleanly by hand at the shelf, and the cut-to-tie ratio is matched to your product's weight. A heavier display gets a tighter perforation, which is noted on the proof.
Can a display box hold heavy jars?
Yes, using stronger corrugated board and dividers. Tell us the product weight and number of units.
Do retailers have rules for display boxes?
Some do, particularly larger chains. Ask your retailer for their requirements before finalising the design.
Can the display be printed in full colour?
Yes, either directly onto the board or with a laminated printed sheet for photographic artwork.
How many units should go in one display?
Enough to sell through in a week or two in a typical shop. Too many makes the display heavy and slow to clear.
Can the display keep products upright?
Yes, dividers or a shaped tray hold products in place when the front panel is removed.
What is the difference between a display tray and a pop-up display?
A display tray is usually a shelf-ready tray with a header. A pop-up display folds flat and opens into a stepped stand for counters.
Can I add product codes for the stockroom?
Yes, codes and handling instructions can be printed on the parts that are torn away, so shoppers never see them.
Do shelf-ready display boxes arrive flat or made up?
Flat, in bundles, and they fold into shape at your packing line before the products go in. A one-page folding guide can be supplied for staff, and the first bundle is worth folding by hand to time the job.
What if a pallet of display boxes arrives with crushed tear lines?
The perforated front is the weakest edge, so check it on a few bundles from the middle of the pallet. Send photos within 10 days of delivery and the affected boxes are reprinted or refunded.
