A Carton Built Around the Bottle

Foundation comes in heavy glass bottles with pumps, frosted bottles with droppers, and soft tubes with flip caps. Each shape needs a different inside. A glass bottle with a pump has a tall, narrow profile and a fragile pump head that should not take pressure from the lid. A dropper bottle has a rubber bulb that dents if squeezed. A tube is light but long, and tends to slide about in a box sized for a bottle.

We start by measuring the container exactly: the height including the cap or pump, the widest point of the bottle or shoulders, and whether the pump is locked down or standing up. From there we set the internal size of the carton with a small clearance, so the bottle sits upright without rattling and the lid does not press on the pump.

Pumps deserve special attention. Many foundation pumps have a twist lock that holds the head down for shipping, and some brands ship with an overcap on top. Both change the height. If your bottles go into the box with a clear overcap fitted, measure with the overcap on; if the pump stands proud, measure to the top of the nozzle. A few millimetres of difference decides whether the tuck flap closes flat or bulges.

Shade Panels and Range Organisation

Foundation is sold by shade, and a range might have many. Shoppers need to find their shade on a crowded shelf, and staff need to restock the right one. A shade panel, usually a swatch of the foundation colour with its name or number, does both jobs. It can sit on the front as a colour band, on the top flap so it is visible in a drawer, or on a side panel facing out in a display.

The cleanest approach is to print one master design for the whole range and change only the shade panel. That keeps costs sensible and the range consistent. We can run several shades in one job, each with its own panel, and check every colour on the free proof. For very large ranges, a blank panel for a printed shade sticker is also an option.

Inserts for Glass Bottles

Glass bottles benefit from an insert, both for protection and for presentation. A simple card collar around the bottle neck stops it sliding, while a die-cut cradle at the base keeps it upright. For premium ranges, a fitted insert wrapped in the same paper as the box makes the bottle look like it is sitting in a display case when the lid is lifted.

Inserts also help when one box size holds bottles of slightly different shapes, such as a standard and a travel size. The outer stays the same and only the insert changes, which simplifies ordering and keeps the shelf looking uniform. The same thinking applies to lotion boxes built around a pump bottle.

Box Styles for Makeup Brands

Most foundation is packed in straight tuck-end cartons, tall and slim, opening at the top. They are quick to fill and economical, and they display well in rows. Reverse tuck cartons open from opposite ends and suit filling lines. Crash-lock bases add strength for heavier glass bottles.

Premium brands sometimes use a two-piece rigid box or a sleeve over a tray, especially for gift sets that pair foundation with a brush or primer. A magnetic closure box adds a satisfying click and is often kept by the customer. If you sell online as well as in shops, consider whether the box needs to survive the post on its own or will always travel inside a shipping box.

Board choice follows the style. White folding board is the usual base and takes colour accurately, which matters when you are trying to show a skin-tone swatch faithfully. Metallised board gives a mirror-like silver or gold surface that can be printed over for a striking effect, and kraft suits clean-beauty-style brands that want a natural look without making claims about the material itself.

Finishes That Suit Cosmetics

Cosmetics packaging is judged on touch as much as look. Soft-touch lamination gives a velvety surface that feels luxurious and resists fingerprints, which matters for a product handled with makeup on. Matt lamination is calm and modern; gloss is bright and bold. Foil on the brand name, in gold, rose gold, silver or a holographic finish, catches the light on a shelf.

Spot UV can pick out a pattern or the brand mark over a matt base. Embossing raises the logo for a tactile touch. Use one or two special finishes rather than all at once; foundation boxes look best when they feel considered rather than crowded.

Shade accuracy deserves its own note. Skin tones are notoriously hard to reproduce in print, because small shifts towards pink or yellow change how a shade reads. Supplying Pantone references for each swatch, or sending a physical sample of the product, gives us a target to aim for and makes the printed panel a much more reliable guide for shoppers choosing their match.

Information Panels and Compliance

Foundation boxes carry a lot of small text: ingredients, usage, warnings, volume and any regulatory marks your product needs. That content is your responsibility, and we print exactly what you supply. Plan the back and side panels carefully, keeping ingredient lists in a clear, legible type size and placing barcodes where scanners can reach them.

If your ingredients or shade names change often, consider printing a blank panel for a label. It saves reprinting entire runs whenever a formula is updated. The free design proof shows all panels at actual size, so you can check every line before production begins.

Foundation Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering foundation boxes.

How do you size a box for a pump bottle?

We measure the bottle height including the pump, and the widest point of the bottle. The box is set with a small clearance so the lid never presses on the pump.

Can each shade have its own box?

Yes. We print one master design and change the shade panel for each colour. Several shades can share one job.

Where should the shade panel go?

Front colour bands help shoppers, while top-flap panels help in drawers and stockrooms. Many brands use both.

Do glass bottles need an insert?

We recommend one. A neck collar or base cradle stops the bottle moving and reduces the risk of chipping.

Can one box fit a standard and a travel size?

Yes, by changing the insert. The outer carton stays the same and the insert holds the smaller bottle in place.

Which finish resists fingerprints?

Soft-touch lamination resists fingerprints well and feels luxurious, which suits products handled with makeup on.

Can you print the ingredients list?

Yes. We print the ingredient and warning text exactly as supplied, and the proof shows it at actual size so you can check legibility.

Can I add a holographic foil logo?

Holographic foil is available and works well on bold logos. It suits younger, trend-led makeup brands.

Can foundation boxes be posted on their own?

Folding cartons are designed for retail and should be posted inside a shipping box. For direct mailing, a corrugated mailer is a better choice.

Can I add a tamper-evident seal?

Yes. A tamper-evident sticker or tear strip shows customers the box has not been opened before purchase.

What if a shade swatch prints the wrong tone?

Shade colours are checked on the proof. If the printed boxes arrive misprinted or damaged, report it within 10 days and we will reprint or refund them.
