Custom Tuck End Foil Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom tuck end foil boxes are folded from board that already carries a metallic layer, so the entire carton shines in silver or gold before a drop of ink goes on. Printing over that surface lets you choose which parts stay metallic and which become solid colour, giving a premium shelf finish on an everyday tuck end box.

Metallic Board Versus Foil Blocking

There are two common ways to get metallic effects on a box. Foil blocking stamps a thin metallic film onto selected areas of a printed box with heat and pressure. It suits a logo or a border, but covering a large area that way is costly and can look patchy. Metallic board, sometimes called foil board, works the other way round: the whole surface is metallic from the start, and print covers the parts you do not want to shine.

That makes metallic board the better choice when you want large reflective areas, gradients of colour over a shimmering base, or a box that looks metallic from every angle. With a white ink layer printed first where needed, colours sit solid and opaque on top of the metal; without it, inks become translucent and take on a metallic tint, like coloured foil.

The result can be subtle or dramatic depending on how much of the surface you leave bare, and it all comes from one board and one print run.

How Tuck End Foil Boxes Are Built

The box itself is a standard folding carton with tuck flaps. Reverse tuck end boxes have the top flap tucking from the back and the bottom from the front, which keeps the front panel clean. Straight tuck end boxes have both flaps on the same side, which suits boxes displayed lying down. For heavier products, an auto bottom can be paired with a tuck top.

Metallic board scores and folds well, but very tight creases can crack the metallic layer slightly at the edges. We set crease lines to suit the board so corners stay smooth. A matt or gloss varnish over the printed areas protects the ink from scuffs, which matters because metallic surfaces show fingerprints more than plain white board.

Ask for a printed sample if the exact metallic shade matters, as silver and gold boards vary slightly between batches and look different on screen.

Products That Suit a Metallic Finish

Cosmetics and skincare are the biggest users: serums, lipsticks, eye creams and nail polish look at home in silver or gold cartons. Fragrance brands use metallic boxes for travel sprays and gift sets. Jewellery and watch accessory brands, premium chocolate makers, tech accessories, vape and e-liquid brands, and supplement companies with a premium line also choose them.

Metallic boxes work best when the product has a sense of occasion or luxury but does not justify a rigid box. A folding carton keeps the unit cost reasonable while the board does the work of making it feel special.

They are also useful for limited editions. A brand whose standard box is white can release a silver or gold version of the same carton for an anniversary or a premium variant, keeping the shape familiar while giving the new edition its own presence. A plain white carton with foil only on the logo is covered under gold foil embossed boxes.

Designing for Custom Tuck End Foil Boxes

Start by deciding which parts of the design should shine. A common approach is a solid colour background with the logo and a pattern left as bare metal, so they catch the light. Another is to leave most of the box metallic and print only text and a coloured band. Gradients printed directly over the metal give a shimmering, colour-shifting effect.

We need artwork with a separate layer marking where white ink goes. If you are not sure how to set this up, send us your design and tell us what should stay metallic; we will prepare the white layer and show the effect on the proof. Fine text works best printed over a white base, as small letters can be hard to read on bare metal under bright light.

Embossing and spot UV combine well with metallic board. An embossed logo on silver board catches light along its raised edges, and spot UV adds contrast between glossy and matt metallic areas. Embossing and spot UV over metallic board are compared in the print and finish options guide.

Sizing and Practical Points

Measure your product at its widest, deepest and tallest points, including caps and pumps, and give us internal dimensions in length by width by height. Add a little clearance, and include any insert thickness if the product needs holding in place. Metallic board is the same thickness as standard board grades, so sizing works in the same way.

Barcodes need care on metallic board. Scanners read black bars against a light background, and bare metal can reflect light and confuse them. Always print barcodes over a solid white patch. The same applies to small regulatory text: put it on a white panel so it stays legible.

Lighting in the shop changes how a metallic box looks. Under warm spotlights, gold board glows and silver takes on a slightly golden cast; under cool daylight tubes, silver looks crisp and blue-white. If you know where the boxes will be displayed, mention it, and look at the proof samples under similar light. It is also worth thinking about photography: metallic boxes reflect their surroundings, so product shots work best against plain backgrounds with soft, diffused light rather than a direct flash.

Who Orders Metallic Tuck Boxes

Our metallic tuck boxes go to skincare and cosmetics brands, fragrance houses, nail and lash brands, chocolatiers, accessory and tech brands, and supplement companies with premium ranges. Contract manufacturers order them for clients who want a luxury look on a folding carton budget.

Gift shops and event planners use small metallic boxes for favours and corporate gifts, where a silver or gold carton with a simple logo looks special without needing a rigid box.

Small brands launching a single hero product often choose a metallic tuck box because one striking carton can carry the whole range on social media without needing an elaborate photo shoot. Brands that want both flaps to tuck the same way use the straight tuck end boxes in metallic board.

Decide What Stays Metallic Before the Artwork

Metallic board works in reverse: the shine is already there, and the print covers it up. The first decision is which parts of the carton stay silver or gold, since those areas are left unprinted or printed with a transparent tint, while anything that must read as a solid colour or white needs an opaque white layer underneath. Mark those areas on a sketch before the artwork is finished, measure the product at its widest point and tallest, and send the box size with the board colour and the print colours.

A custom quote is emailed within one working day, minimums are low and set per job, and metallic tuck boxes start from £0.25 each. The free design proof marks the metallic and white ink areas separately. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and boxes ship flat on free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days; metallic surfaces show scuffs, so boxes that arrive marked or misprinted are reprinted or refunded if reported within 10 days. A carton with the same shine but a locking base for heavier jars is covered under tuck end auto bottom boxes.

Tuck End Foil Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering tuck end foil boxes.

What is the difference between foil board and foil blocking?

Foil board has a metallic surface across the whole sheet, and print covers the parts you do not want to shine. Foil blocking stamps metallic film onto selected areas. Foil board is better for large metallic areas.

Can I get solid colours on metallic board?

Yes, a white ink layer printed first makes colours solid and opaque. Without it, inks look translucent and take on a metallic tint.

Is gold board available as well as silver?

Yes, both silver and gold metallic boards are available. Silver is more versatile because printed colours over it can create many metallic shades.

Will barcodes scan on a metallic box?

Print barcodes over a solid white patch so scanners can read them. Bare metal reflects light and can cause scanning errors.

Do metallic boxes show fingerprints?

Bare metallic areas can show fingerprints more than plain board. A varnish helps protect the surface and reduces marking.

Can I emboss a logo on a metallic tuck box?

Yes, embossing works very well on metallic board because light catches the raised edges. It is one of the most effective combinations.

Is a metallic tuck box cheaper than a rigid box?

Yes, a folding carton on metallic board costs much less than a rigid box while still looking premium on the shelf.

How do I mark which parts stay metallic in my artwork?

Add a separate layer showing where white ink goes, or tell us what should stay metallic and we will prepare it. The proof shows the effect.

Can I order a metallic version of my existing box?

Yes, send us your current dieline and artwork. We can adapt the design to metallic board for a limited edition or premium line.

Does metallic board crack at the folds?

Tight creases can mark the metallic layer slightly. We set crease lines to suit the board so folds stay neat.

Can I add a window to a foil tuck box?

Yes, a die-cut window with clear film can be added. The contrast between metallic board and the visible product looks striking.
