Custom Gold Foil Embossed Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Gold foil embossed boxes combine two finishes in one: a raised impression pressed into the board and a layer of metallic gold laid exactly over it. The result is a logo that catches the light and can be felt with a fingertip, which is why premium brands choose it for the pieces they most want noticed.

How Gold Foil and Embossing Work Together

Embossing pushes part of the board upwards using a matched pair of metal dies, one raised and one recessed. Hot foil stamping transfers a thin metallic film onto the board using heat and pressure from a separate die. When the two are combined, either in one pass with a combination die or in two carefully registered passes, the gold sits on top of the raised area and the edges of the foil follow the edges of the emboss.

That registration is what separates a good finish from a poor one. If the foil drifts even slightly off the raised shape, you see a thin gold line on the flat board beside it, and the effect looks cheap. We make the foil and emboss dies from the same artwork file so they line up, and we test the pressure on your chosen board before the full run.

Choosing the Box Behind the Finish

The finish needs a box that deserves it. Rigid boxes made from thick greyboard wrapped in printed or coloured paper are the most common partner, because the wrap paper takes a crisp emboss and the solid structure makes the whole package feel substantial. Lift-off lid boxes, book style boxes with a magnetic flap and shoulder boxes with a visible collar all work well.

Folding cartons can also carry gold foil embossing, which is useful for brands that need a premium look on a product that ships in quantity, such as skincare, fine teas or spirits miniatures. The board has to be thick enough to hold the raised shape without cracking, so we usually recommend 350 gsm or heavier for an embossed folding carton.

Paper choice on rigid boxes matters too. Smooth, uncoated papers give a soft, crisp emboss. Textured papers such as linen or felt finishes add character but can break up very fine foil lines, so we would keep the gold detail bolder on those. Folding cartons that carry foil without the emboss are made as tuck end boxes with foil at a lower cost.

Designing Artwork for Gold Foil Embossed Boxes

Not every logo translates to foil and emboss without adjustment. Very thin lines, small serif type and tiny gaps between shapes can fill in with foil or flatten under the emboss. As a rough guide, keep lines at 0.3 mm or thicker and text at 8 pt or larger for foil, and give embossed areas a little more breathing room than you would in print.

Supply artwork as vector files with the foil and emboss areas on their own named layers. If you want the emboss to be multi-level, with some parts raised higher than others, or sculpted rather than flat-topped, tell us at the start because that requires a more detailed die. Flat single-level embossing is the most common choice for logos and monograms.

  • Vector artwork with separate foil and emboss layers
  • Line weight 0.3 mm or more, text 8 pt or larger
  • Avoid placing the finish across a fold or score line
  • Say if you want single-level, multi-level or sculpted embossing

Shades of Gold and Pairing Colours

Gold foil is not one colour. Bright yellow gold gives a classic, warm shine. Pale or champagne gold feels softer and more contemporary. Rose gold leans pink and is popular for beauty and jewellery. Matt gold has a brushed look that suits minimalist branding, and holographic gold adds a rainbow flash that appeals to younger audiences.

The background colour changes how the gold reads. Gold on black, navy or deep green looks rich and high contrast. Gold on white or cream is quieter and elegant. Gold on kraft has a rustic, crafted feel. If you are not sure, we can prepare a proof showing two foil options side by side on your chosen paper so you can compare before committing. The wrap papers and foil shades we stock are shown together on our finish page.

Using the Finish With Restraint

The most effective gold foil embossed boxes use the finish in one or two places, not everywhere. A logo centred on the lid, a monogram on a magnetic flap or a fine border around the edge gives the box a focal point. Covering a large area in foil can look heavy, and large embossed areas are more likely to show slight unevenness.

Consider pairing the gold with a blind emboss elsewhere, for example a raised pattern with no foil on the sides of the lid. The contrast between the shining logo and the subtle texture adds depth without adding more colour.

Lamination also affects the result. Foil can be applied on top of a matt or soft-touch laminate, which gives a very clean contrast between a velvety background and a bright, raised logo. Gloss lamination under foil reduces the contrast, so it is used less often. If the box will be handled a lot, for example on a shop counter where customers pick it up, a laminate protects the printed areas around the foil from fingerprints and scuffs.

Inside the box, a simpler approach usually works best. A plain coloured interior or a single foiled line on the inside of the lid continues the theme without competing with the outside, and it keeps the cost of the finish focused where it makes the biggest impression. Boxes built to the same standard without any foil are listed as premium rigid boxes.

Who Chooses This Finish

Jewellers use gold foil embossed boxes for rings, necklaces and watches, where the box is often kept long after the purchase. Fragrance and skincare brands use them for flagship products and gift sets. Chocolatiers, fine tea merchants and spirits producers use them to justify a premium price on the shelf. Wedding stationers and event planners also use them for invitation and favour boxes where a monogram or date is foiled on the lid.

What these buyers share is that the box is part of the product. Customers handle it, photograph it and often reuse it, so the extra care in the finish pays back every time it is picked up. Launch kits and limited editions for those brands are covered on our premium boxes for flagship products page.

Send the Foil and Emboss Areas as Separate Layers

Both dies are cut from your file, so the artwork decides the result: supply a vector file with the foil shape and the emboss shape on separate named layers, keep lines at 0.3 mm or more and type at 8 pt or larger, and keep the finish off any fold. Say which gold you want, bright, champagne, rose or matt, and whether the emboss is single-level or sculpted, since a sculpted die takes longer to make. Choose the wrap paper at the same time, because a textured linen softens fine foil lines.

Send the box style, size, paper, artwork layers and quantity, and a custom quote comes back by email within one working day, with minimums quoted per job. The free proof shows exactly where the foil and emboss sit and which gold is specified; ask for two shades side by side if undecided. Production takes 4–7 working days after approval and tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses is free, taking 2–3 working days. Scuffed or misprinted boxes reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded, and the dies are kept for repeat runs. Brands that want the raised mark without the metal can look at blind embossed boxes without foil.

Gold Foil Embossed Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering gold foil embossed boxes.

What is the difference between foil stamping and gold foil embossing?

Foil stamping lays gold onto a flat surface. Gold foil embossing raises the area first, or at the same time, so the gold sits on a raised shape you can feel. The second gives more depth and a more tactile finish.

Will the foil line up exactly with the raised area?

We make both dies from the same artwork so they register closely. Pressure and alignment are tested on your board before the full run starts.

Can fine text be foil embossed?

Text of 8 pt or larger with lines of at least 0.3 mm usually works well. Smaller detail can fill in, so we will advise on your proof if anything needs thickening.

Which board takes the best emboss?

Smooth uncoated wrap papers on rigid boxes give the crispest edges. On folding cartons, board of 350 gsm or heavier holds the raised shape without cracking.

Can I choose a shade other than yellow gold?

Yes. Champagne, rose, matt and holographic golds are all available. We can show two options side by side on your proof if you want to compare.

Does the finish work on black boxes?

Gold on black is one of the most striking combinations. It gives strong contrast and a rich look, which is why many jewellers choose it.

Can the emboss have different heights?

Multi-level and sculpted embossing are possible and give a more detailed raised effect. Mention it early, as the die takes more work than a flat single-level emboss.

Can I put the finish on the side of the box?

Yes, as long as it does not cross a fold or score line. Side panels are often used for a smaller repeat of the logo.

Are dies reused on repeat orders?

Dies are kept for your artwork, which makes a repeat order with the same design quicker to set up. Any change to the logo would need a new die.

Can I add an insert to hold the product?

Satin, velvet, foam and card inserts are all available. Send product sizes so the cut-outs fit snugly.

Will gold foil scuff if the boxes are stacked on a shop counter?

Foil is tough once set, but a gloss foil on an unlaminated wrap can show fine marks after months of handling. A matt or soft-touch laminate around the foil protects the surrounding print, and a plain outer carton keeps stock pristine until it goes on display. Boxes that arrive scuffed or misprinted are reprinted or refunded when reported within 10 days.
