Custom Embossed Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom embossed boxes carry a logo or pattern pressed up out of the board, so customers notice it with their fingertips before they have fully read it. Embossing works on rigid gift boxes and folding cartons alike, and it suits premium brands that would rather show quality through texture than through loud colour.

What Embossing Actually Does

Embossing uses a pair of matched dies, one raised and one recessed, to press the board between them. The result is a raised area in the shape of your logo, lettering or pattern, with a corresponding dip on the inside of the panel. It changes the surface of the box rather than adding ink to it.

Its opposite, debossing, presses the design down into the surface. Both are tactile, and both catch light differently from the flat board around them, so the design shifts subtly as the box is turned in the hand. That small movement is a large part of why embossed packaging feels considered.

Embossing can be combined with print or foil in perfect register, so a gold logo stands up from the board, or used on its own with no ink at all. The ink-free version, called blind embossing, is one of the quietest and most confident finishes a box can carry. Embossing is most often specified on the lids in our luxury and gift box range.

Blind, Registered and Foil Embossing

There are three common approaches, and each gives a different character.

Blind embossing relies on shadow and texture alone, so it needs a board colour with enough depth to show the relief. Registered embossing raises an area that has already been printed, lining up the raised shape with the ink beneath. Foil embossing applies a metallic or coloured foil and raises it in one combined press, which gives a crisp, sculpted metallic edge. Where the metallic finish matters most, our gold foil embossed boxes combine the two in one press.

  • Blind emboss on a dark textured paper for minimalist luxury
  • Registered emboss on a printed logo for a raised colour mark
  • Foil and emboss together for jewellery, fragrance and spirits
  • Multi-level emboss with stepped heights for detailed crests
  • Sculpted emboss with rounded contours on simple shapes
  • All-over embossed pattern such as a fine linen or geometric texture

Which Boards Emboss Well

Embossing needs a material that stretches a little without cracking. Rigid boxes wrapped in paper are ideal, because the wrapping paper is embossed before it is glued around the greyboard, and textured or uncoated papers take a deep, crisp impression. Folding boxboard also embosses well, especially uncoated or soft touch laminated stocks.

Thicker, very stiff boards resist deep embossing and may crack at sharp corners of the design. Very glossy coatings can split slightly over tall reliefs. If you want a strong emboss on a laminated carton, soft touch or matt laminate behaves better than gloss.

Kraft board embosses with a pleasing, slightly rustic edge, which suits craft spirits, coffee and artisanal goods.

For rigid boxes, the choice of wrapping paper has the biggest influence on the final look. Felt-marked and linen papers hold an emboss with soft, rounded shoulders. Smooth matt papers give sharper edges that read well on geometric logos. Metallic and pearlescent papers make a blind emboss shimmer as the light moves, which can be striking on a small jewellery box.

If you are unsure, ask for a paper swatch selection before choosing. Holding a few papers under your own lighting gives a better sense of how the emboss will look on a shop counter than any screen can.

Preparing Artwork for an Emboss

The emboss area should be supplied as a separate vector layer, in solid black, with no gradients. Fine lines thinner than about 0.5 mm and very small text tend to fill in or disappear, so logos with delicate serifs may need simplifying slightly for the emboss plate. Bold marks, monograms, crests and short words emboss best.

Keep embossed areas away from fold lines and the edges of panels, by at least 5 mm. Embossing too close to a fold weakens the crease and can make the box sit unevenly. Remember the reverse of the panel shows a dip; on a rigid box that is hidden by the board, but on a folding carton it may be visible inside the lid.

Our free design proof shows the emboss layer overlaid on the box layout so you can confirm the position and size before the dies are made.

Brands That Choose Embossing

Embossing fits brands whose products are bought partly for how they feel to own. Fragrance, jewellery, watches, fine tea, premium spirits and luxury chocolate are obvious examples. It also suits professional services sending client gifts, where a blind-embossed monogram on a navy box says more than any slogan.

Smaller brands use embossing to lift a simple box without changing anything else. A plain kraft carton with a single embossed logo can look surprisingly upmarket, and it costs less than full colour print plus foil. For subscription boxes, an embossed lid feels like a keepsake rather than packaging.

Because the effect is tactile, it also helps with accessibility. A raised logo or initial can be found by touch, which some brands value for products used by people with visual impairments.

Pairing Embossing with Other Finishes

Embossing rarely needs much help, but a few combinations work especially well. Soft touch laminate with a blind emboss creates a velvety box with a crisp raised mark. Spot UV over an embossed area adds shine to the relief only, which looks like a wet glaze on the logo. Foil and emboss in a single colour, such as copper on black, gives a jewellery-box feel.

Avoid stacking too many effects in one small area. A logo that is foiled, embossed, spot UV coated and surrounded by a pattern starts to look busy. One strong tactile feature, with plain board around it, usually looks more expensive than several competing ones.

If you are unsure, ask for the proof to show two versions: a blind emboss and a foil emboss. Seeing them side by side makes the decision easier. A deboss pairs just as well with foil, as our debossed paperboard boxes show.

Simplify the Logo Before the Die Is Cut

An emboss die is made from your artwork exactly as supplied, so the time to simplify is before you send it. Open the logo in vector form and remove lines thinner than about half a millimetre, tiny text and fine serifs, which fill in or vanish under pressure. Decide whether the emboss is blind, registered to a printed logo or foiled, and pick a board or wrap that takes a deep impression; soft-touch and uncoated papers show the relief best. Tell us the exact panel and size, because a presentation box lid can take a larger emboss than a slim carton.

With the box style, dimensions, board and the emboss area marked, we email a custom quote within one working day, with the die included in the price and reused on reorders. The free proof shows the emboss outline over the artwork. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval, boxes arrive by tracked courier to UK mainland addresses, and misregistered or damaged boxes reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded.

Embossed Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering embossed boxes.

Should a logo on a gift box be embossed or debossed?

Embossing raises the design above the surface, which catches light and suits crests and wordmarks. Debossing presses it down, which reads as quieter and suits minimalist brands. Both use a die, and both can be combined with foil.

Can an embossed logo also be foiled?

Yes. Foil and emboss can be applied together in one press, giving a raised metallic logo with crisp edges.

How fine can the embossed detail be?

Lines thinner than about 0.5 mm and very small text tend to soften or vanish. We may suggest simplifying a detailed logo for the emboss plate.

Does embossing work on kraft board?

Yes, kraft takes a good impression with a slightly rustic edge. It suits craft and artisanal brands well.

Will the emboss show on the inside of the box?

On rigid boxes the dip is hidden behind the greyboard. On folding cartons it can be seen inside the lid, which most brands find acceptable.

Which laminate is best with embossing?

Soft touch or matt laminate stretches well over a relief. High gloss can crack slightly on tall embosses.

Is blind embossing visible enough on light boards?

It is subtle on white or very pale boards. Mid or dark coloured papers show the shadow of a blind emboss far better.

Do I pay for the emboss die again on reorders?

No, the die is reused for repeat orders of the same design, which keeps the impression consistent between batches.

Does making an emboss die slow the order down?

The die is made as part of the normal run, so embossed boxes still take 4 to 7 working days after proof approval, followed by 2 to 3 working days of free tracked UK mainland delivery.

What if the emboss is out of line with the print?

Report any misregistration or damage within 10 days and we will reprint or refund the affected boxes.

Can a pattern be embossed across the whole lid?

Yes, an all-over texture such as linen, dots or a geometric pattern can cover the whole panel, with or without a separate logo.
