Custom Greyboard Boxes
Custom greyboard boxes are the rigid, heavy boxes that make a product launch or a presentation set feel important before the lid even comes off. We build them from dense greyboard, wrap them in printed or coloured paper and send a free design proof before production starts.

What Greyboard Is and Why It Feels Different
Greyboard is a thick, dense board made from compressed paper fibres. It does not fold the way carton board does, which is exactly why it is used for rigid boxes. Once the board is cut, scored and formed into a tray or lid, the corners are reinforced and the whole shape is wrapped in a printed or coloured paper. The result is a box that holds its shape completely, even when empty.
The difference is obvious the moment someone picks one up. A folding carton feels light and slightly flexible; a greyboard box feels solid and weighty. That weight signals value, and it is why phone makers, jewellers, fragrance houses and corporate gift teams use rigid boxes for their most important products.
Greyboard comes in different thicknesses. Thinner board, around 1.5 mm, suits smaller boxes for jewellery and accessories, while 2 to 3 mm board is used for larger presentation sets and heavier products. The thicknesses we use are set out in our greyboard thickness explained guide.
Box Styles Built from Greyboard
The same rigid board can be made into several styles, and the choice shapes how the customer experiences the opening.
If you are unsure which suits your product, think about how often it will be opened. A one-off launch box can be dramatic; a box used every day, such as for a watch or a pen, should be simple to open and close.
Closures matter as well. Magnets give a soft, satisfying click and keep a book-style box shut on a desk. Ribbon ties suit gift boxes that will be opened once. A plain lift-off lid with a thumb notch cut into the base is the simplest of all and never fails. Hinged versions with a concealed magnet are on the hinged lid boxes with magnets page.
- Lid and base: a separate lid lifts off a base tray. The classic presentation style, ideal for gift sets.
- Book style: a hinged cover opens like a book, often held shut with a magnet. Popular for launches and corporate kits.
- Shoulder and neck: a raised inner collar shows a contrasting colour between lid and base. Very premium.
- Drawer: an inner tray slides out of a rigid outer case. Good for jewellery, cards and stationery.
- Hinged lid: lid and base joined at the back, opening like a chest. Suits keepsakes and accessories.

Wrapping Papers and Finishes for Custom Greyboard Boxes
The wrapping paper is what customers see and touch, so it shapes the whole impression. Printed art paper takes full-colour designs, photography and patterns. Coloured specialty papers come in textured, linen, leather-effect and pearlescent finishes and are often used plain, with a foil or embossed logo as the only decoration.
Lamination protects printed papers from scuffs and fingerprints. Matt and soft touch finishes are the most popular for premium products, while gloss works for bright, playful designs. Uncoated textured papers are left as they are for a natural feel.
Foil stamping, embossing and debossing work particularly well on rigid boxes because the board underneath is firm and gives a crisp impression. A single blind-debossed logo on a dark textured paper is one of the most understated and effective finishes you can choose.
Paper choice also affects how well the box ages. Darker papers show scuffs more easily than mid-tones, and very pale papers pick up fingerprints. If the box will be handled a lot, such as a display unit in a shop, a laminated print or a textured paper hides wear better than a smooth uncoated one. Our wrapping papers and finishes compared guide shows the same logo on each surface.
Inserts That Present the Product
A rigid box is about presentation, and the insert is where that presentation happens. A well-made insert holds each item at the right angle, in the right place, with nothing loose. Card inserts wrapped in the same paper as the box look clean. Foam inserts covered in velvet or flocked material suit jewellery and watches. EVA foam with precise cut-outs suits electronics and kits made up of several parts.
For sets, plan the layout carefully. The hero product should sit at the centre or top, with smaller items around it. A ribbon pull under each item makes lifting it out easy, and a printed card or booklet on top of the insert can introduce the set.
Send us the products, or precise measurements, and we will lay out each cavity on the proof before production. Jewellery and watch sets usually move to velvet inserts for presentation sets.
Product Launches and Presentation Sets
Rigid boxes are a favourite for launches because they turn a product into an event. Brands send them to journalists, influencers, investors and key customers, often with a personalised card inside. The box is made to be photographed and opened on camera, so every detail matters, from the colour of the inside paper to how easily the lid lifts.
Corporate teams use greyboard boxes for onboarding kits, awards and client gifts, where a branded box makes a modest gift feel considered. Fragrance and skincare brands use them for discovery sets and gift editions. Jewellers and watchmakers use them as standard.
If a launch box will be sent by courier, plan an outer shipping carton. A rigid box survives handling well, but its wrapped paper can scuff on conveyor belts.
Planning Lead Time and Quantities
Rigid boxes involve more hand finishing than folding cartons, so they suit planned projects rather than last-minute orders. Wrapping, corner work and inserts all take care, and specialty papers sometimes need to be sourced to match a colour.
Because each box is built rather than folded, they also arrive assembled and take up more storage space. For large runs, plan where they will be kept before delivery. Magnetic book-style boxes can sometimes be supplied flat-packed for self-assembly, which saves space but adds a step for your team.
We recommend a sample or prototype for complex sets, especially when several products have to sit in one insert. Longer retail runs of the same build are quoted as premium rigid boxes for retail runs.
Pick the Board Thickness From the Box Size
Greyboard is chosen by the span it has to hold flat. A box under 150 mm across is fine on 1.5 mm board; a lid 300 mm across needs 2 mm or more to stay rigid without bowing. So start with the finished size, including any insert, and we recommend the thickness. Decide the lid next, lift-off, hinged or shoulder, because each changes how the box is wrapped and priced. Send the products or their measurements, the wrapping paper you have in mind, and a vector logo for foil or print, and we return a free proof showing the wrap, the inside paper and the insert layout together. The quote comes by email within one working day, minimums are quoted per job so a short run of launch boxes is possible, and standard production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval. Made-up boxes travel on free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses. Boxes that open like a cover with a magnetic flap are our book style rigid boxes.

Greyboard Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering greyboard boxes.
What thickness of greyboard should I choose?
Around 1.5 mm suits small boxes for jewellery and accessories, while 2 to 3 mm suits larger sets and heavier products. We will recommend a thickness once we know the contents.
Do greyboard boxes arrive flat?
Most rigid boxes arrive fully built because the board cannot be folded flat. Some magnetic book-style boxes can be supplied flat for self-assembly.
Can I use a textured paper instead of printing?
Yes. Coloured textured papers with a foil or embossed logo give a very premium look without full-colour print.
What insert works best for a launch kit?
Card inserts wrapped in matching paper look clean, while EVA foam holds several products precisely. We lay out each cavity on your proof.
Can the inside of a greyboard box be lined in a contrasting paper?
Yes, many brands choose a contrasting inside paper so the colour appears when the lid is lifted. The lining is wrapped onto the board before assembly, so there are no raw edges. A printed pattern inside is also possible.
Are greyboard boxes strong enough to post?
The board itself is strong, but the wrapped paper can scuff and corners can dent in a courier network. An outer shipping carton is recommended for anything posted. For hand delivery or in-store sales, the box travels on its own.
What is a shoulder and neck box?
It has a raised inner collar between lid and base, often in a contrasting colour. It feels very premium and suits fragrance and jewellery.
Can you add a magnetic closure?
Yes, book-style and hinged boxes can have magnets hidden under the paper so the lid closes with a click. The magnets are set into the board during assembly. The closure is shown on the proof.
Should I order a prototype first?
For complex sets with several products, yes, a prototype lets you check the fit and the presentation before a full run. A single box takes a few days and its cost is noted on the quote. Simple lid-and-base boxes rarely need one.
Can each box carry a personalised name?
Personalised cards inside the box are the simplest route. Printing names on the box itself is possible for some runs, so ask when you request a quote.
Can greyboard boxes be reused as storage by the customer?
Rigid boxes are strong enough to be kept for years, which is why customers often reuse them for keepsakes. A box that is pleasant to open and close keeps your brand in view long after the launch.
