Custom Velvet Inserts

from £0.25 an insertPriced per job · low minimums

Custom velvet inserts are the soft, fitted beds that hold a ring, watch or pendant exactly where it should sit when the box opens. We cut them to your box and your pieces, then cover them in velvet or flocked paper so the jewellery looks cushioned, secure and ready to give.

What a Velvet Insert Actually Is

Most velvet inserts are built in layers. A core of card, greyboard or foam gives the shape and holds the cut-outs. That core is then wrapped or laminated with a velvet-effect material, which can be a true woven velvet fabric, a flocked paper with a fine pile, or a suedette with a softer, flatter feel. The insert drops into the base of a box and is held in place by friction or a light adhesive.

The core decides how the insert behaves. Card cores are slim and suit flat items such as earrings on a backing card. Foam cores give depth and grip, so a ring slot or a watch cushion holds the piece firmly. Greyboard cores suit large, flat displays where several items sit side by side, such as a necklace and earring set. If you are unsure which core you need, describe the heaviest piece and how deep the box is, and we will recommend one.

The cover decides how it feels. Velvet with a deep pile reads as the most luxurious. Flocked paper gives a very similar look for less and is easier to wrap around tight corners. Suedette has a smooth, matt surface that suits modern and minimal brands. p2 Foam cores on their own are covered on our foam inserts page.

Cut-Outs for Rings, Watches and Necklaces

Every piece of jewellery needs a different way of being held. Rings sit in a slit cut into a foam roll or a padded slot, so the band disappears and the stone faces up. Watches wrap around a removable velvet cushion shaped like a wrist, which keeps the strap curved naturally. Necklaces and pendants hang from a raised tab or lie in a channel cut to the shape of the chain, with the pendant held in a shallow recess.

Earrings are usually pushed through a covered card panel or held in small slits so the pair stays together. Bracelets and bangles need a curved bed or a cushion of their own. For sets, we combine these cut-outs in one insert and arrange them so the box looks balanced when opened. p1 Sets with a pendant and earrings together sit in our jewellery boxes with fitted inserts.

Fitting Velvet Inserts to Your Boxes

An insert has to fit two things: the box it sits in and the pieces it holds. For the box, we need the internal length, width and depth of the base, and ideally a sample box, because rigid boxes can vary slightly from their stated size. The insert should sit flush or just below the rim so the lid closes without pressing on the jewellery.

For the pieces, send measurements or, better, the items themselves or exact replicas. Ring sizes vary, watch faces differ in diameter and lug width, and pendants come in all shapes. We draw cut-outs with a small allowance so pieces press in firmly but lift out without force. The free proof shows every cut-out drawn to scale, and we can make a sample insert for checking before the full run when fit is critical.

If you already have boxes from another supplier, we can make inserts to fit them. If you need both, ordering box and insert together means we size them as a pair and you avoid gaps or pinching.

Choosing a Colour and Texture

Black velvet is the classic choice because it gives gold, silver and stones the sharpest contrast. Navy and deep green give a similar contrast with a slightly richer feel. Burgundy suits gold jewellery and traditional brands, and cream or ivory flatters pearls, rose gold and bridal pieces. Grey works well with silver and modern designs.

Match the insert to your box rather than designing it on its own. A black rigid box with a black insert looks unified and serious, while a white box with a navy insert gives a clear moment of contrast when the lid lifts. If your brand uses a specific colour, we can usually find a close flocked match, though true velvet fabric comes in a narrower range of shades.

A small foil logo can be added to the insert itself, often on the inside of the lid pad or a lower corner. Keep it subtle, as the jewellery should be the focus.

Who Uses Velvet Box Inserts

Jewellers and goldsmiths are the main buyers, from independent makers selling online to shops with a counter. Watch brands and watch repairers use cushion inserts for presentation and returns. Gift companies use velvet beds for cufflinks, pens, keepsakes and engraved items, and corporate gift suppliers add them to presentation boxes for awards and long-service gifts.

Cosmetic and fragrance brands occasionally use velvet inserts to hold a perfume bottle or a lipstick in a gift set, where the soft surface adds to the sense of occasion and keeps glass from rattling. Hair accessory brands, makers of rosaries and prayer beads, and coin and medal dealers order them for the same reason: the piece is small, valuable to the owner, and deserves a bed that holds it still.

Protection in Transit as Well as Presentation

A good insert is not only decorative. Fine chains tangle, stones scratch against metal, and watches slide into the lid if nothing holds them. A fitted insert keeps each piece in position, so the customer opens the box to the same view you saw when you packed it.

For pieces sent by post, pair the presentation box with a snug outer mailer. The insert stops movement inside the box, and the mailer protects the box itself from crushing. Some brands also add a thin velvet or satin pad on the underside of the lid, which presses gently on the jewellery and stops it lifting out of its slot if the box is turned over. p1 The outer mailer is covered on our printed mailer boxes page.

Send a Box and the Heaviest Piece Together

A velvet insert is cut to a box and specified by a piece, and both are best seen in the flesh: post us one of the boxes it will sit in, since rigid boxes vary from their listed size by a millimetre or two, and the heaviest item it will hold. From those we choose the core, card for flat earrings, foam for a ring slot or a watch cushion, and set the cut-outs.

Say which pieces share one insert and lay them out as you want the box to open, with the hero piece in the centre. Choose black, navy or grey for silver and burgundy or cream for gold and pearls. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day, from £0.25 for a card-core insert, with the minimum set per job.

The free proof shows the layout and every cut-out, and a sample can be made first where the fit is critical. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the inserts reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery. Jewellers ordering the box as well usually choose our velvet-covered boxes with lids so the inside and outside match.

Velvet Inserts Questions

What buyers ask before ordering velvet inserts.

Is the insert real velvet or flocked paper?

We offer both. Woven velvet fabric has a deeper pile and the richest feel, while flocked paper looks very similar, costs less and wraps neatly around tight cut-outs. Suedette is a third option with a flatter, smoother surface.

Can velvet inserts be cut for ring boxes I already stock?

Yes. Post one of your boxes so we measure the inside directly, because listed sizes for rigid boxes are often a millimetre or two out, and that is the difference between an insert that drops in and one that bows. Tell us the band width for the ring slit as well.

How does a ring stay in the insert?

The ring band slides into a slit in a foam roll or a padded slot, which grips it with the stone facing up. We size the slit for the band width you send.

Can a watch cushion be removed from the box?

Yes, watch cushions are usually removable so the strap can be fastened around them. The cushion then sits in a shaped recess in the base insert.

Which velvet colour suits silver jewellery?

Black, navy and grey all show silver well. Black gives the sharpest contrast, while grey looks softer and more modern.

Can you hold a necklace so the chain does not tangle?

Yes, we cut a channel or use a raised tab so the chain lies in a set path, with the pendant held in its own recess. That keeps the piece neat when the box is opened.

Can you put my logo on the velvet?

A small foil logo can be added to the insert or the lid pad. Foil shows best on short-pile flock and suedette, as deep velvet can soften fine detail.

Can one insert hold a full jewellery set?

Yes, a set insert can combine ring, earring, pendant and bracelet positions. Lay the pieces out as you want them shown and we will draw the insert around that arrangement.

Will a velvet insert stop pieces moving in the post?

A fitted insert holds pieces firmly, and a lid pad stops them lifting out if the box is turned. Use an outer mailer as well so the presentation box itself is protected.

Can I see a sample insert before the full order?

For inserts where the fit is critical, we can make a sample to check with your actual pieces before production. It adds a little time, which we explain with the custom quote.

Do you make velvet inserts for non-jewellery gifts?

Yes, pens, cufflinks, keepsakes, small bottles and engraved gifts all suit a velvet bed. Send us the item measurements and we will cut a recess to fit.
