Custom Velvet Boxes with Lids
Custom velvet boxes with lids are rigid boxes covered in soft velvet fabric, fitted with a cushioned insert and closed by a lift-off or hinged lid. Jewellers, watch sellers and keepsake makers use them because velvet signals care and value before the customer even sees what is inside.

Why Velvet Still Means Something Special
Velvet has a long association with fine jewellery and treasured objects. Its soft pile catches light, feels warm in the hand and makes even a simple pair of earrings feel like an occasion. When someone is handed a velvet box, they expect something precious inside, and that expectation is part of the gift.
For a jeweller or watch brand, the box is the last step in the sale and the first thing the recipient sees. A velvet box with a neatly fitted insert and a discreet foil logo turns a purchase into a presentation. It is also the box people keep: on dressing tables, in drawers and in safes, holding the piece for years.
Velvet boxes also suit moments where presentation is everything: proposals, anniversaries, graduations, retirements and christenings. For these, the box is often opened in front of other people, and it needs to look perfect in photos as well as in the hand.
For online jewellers, a velvet box is a way to close the gap with high street stores. Customers buying fine jewellery online worry about whether it will feel as special as buying in person, and a well made velvet box answers that question as soon as the parcel is opened. Everyday fashion pieces usually sell in card jewellery boxes for everyday pieces, with velvet kept for fine jewellery.
Box Styles and Lid Types
The two main formats are the lift-off lid and the hinged lid. A lift-off lid box has a separate base and lid, both wrapped in velvet; it feels classic and works well for larger pieces and keepsake sets. A hinged box, often called a clamshell, opens like a book and holds a ring, earrings or pendant upright for display. Hinged boxes are the familiar choice for proposals and fine jewellery sales.
Drawer boxes with a velvet-covered tray sliding from a sleeve suit bracelets and watches. Long boxes with a lift-off lid hold necklaces laid flat. Multi-compartment boxes with separate pockets suit sets and collections. The hinged construction is shared with our hinged lid rigid boxes in other wraps.

Inserts That Hold Each Piece
The insert is what makes a velvet box work. Ring boxes use a slotted cushion that grips the band and holds the stone upright. Earring boxes use a card or foam pad with small slits or holes for studs and hooks. Pendant and necklace boxes use a raised pad with a hook or slit for the chain, so the pendant sits centred. Watch boxes use a removable pillow that the strap wraps around.
Inserts are usually covered in matching or contrasting velvet, satin or suede-effect fabric. A contrasting colour, such as cream velvet in a navy box, makes the piece the focus. The inside of the lid can be lined with satin and printed or foil-stamped with your logo, which is where many jewellers prefer their branding to sit.
Tell us exactly what each box will hold. A ring slot sized for a slim band will not grip a wide band, and an earring pad set up for studs will not suit drop earrings.
For brands that sell many styles, a removable insert can make one box work for several pieces. A ring cushion can be swapped for an earring pad in the same outer box, which keeps your stock of boxes simpler without compromising the fit. Jewellers who already have boxes can order velvet inserts for existing boxes on their own.
Velvet Colours and Branding
Deep colours are the classic choice: navy, black, burgundy, bottle green and royal blue. Softer shades such as blush pink, dove grey and cream suit bridal, contemporary and children's ranges. Choose a colour that works with your brand and with the metals you use; gold jewellery glows against navy and green, while silver looks crisp against grey and black.
Branding on velvet is usually done with hot foil stamping, which presses a metallic logo into the pile. Gold and silver foil are the most popular, and the effect is subtle and refined. Fine details can soften on velvet because of the pile, so keep logos reasonably bold. Many brands place the foil logo inside the lid on satin, where it can be very fine, and leave the outside plain.
A blind deboss, pressing your logo into the velvet without foil, is another option for a very quiet, tonal look.
Sizing Velvet Boxes
Velvet boxes come in fairly standard sizes for each type of jewellery, which helps your range look consistent. Ring boxes are small cubes; earring and pendant boxes are slightly larger and flatter; bracelet and watch boxes are wider; necklace boxes are long and shallow. For keepsakes such as christening gifts, baby teeth or medals, we size the box around the item.
If you sell matching sets, consider a single larger box with several compartments. It presents the set together and avoids a pile of small boxes at the till.
Outer packaging matters too. A velvet box can mark if rubbed against other boxes. A simple printed card sleeve or a small paper bag protects it in transit and adds another layer to the presentation.
Caring for Velvet Packaging
Velvet picks up dust and fingerprints, and its pile can be crushed if boxes are stacked tightly or stored under weight. Keep stock in its cartons until needed and avoid stacking too many boxes on top of one another. A soft clothes brush lifts the pile and removes dust before a box is handed to a customer.
Avoid storing velvet boxes in damp or very sunny spots. Strong sunlight can fade darker colours over time, especially on display boxes in shop windows.
If you post jewellery, place the velvet box in a snug outer mailer with a little tissue so it cannot rub against the walls during transit. Between seasons, store boxes in outer cartons for storage so the pile is not crushed.
Send a Ring Band Width or the Piece Itself Before the Slot Is Cut
Velvet box inserts are cut to the jewellery, and the detail that most often goes wrong is the ring slot, which will not grip a wide band if it was cut for a slim one. Send the band widths in your range, or post a piece of each type, and tell us whether pendants hang from a slot, earrings sit on a card and bracelets wrap a pillow. Choose the velvet colour against the metal: navy, green and burgundy for gold, black and grey for silver, cream and blush for bridal. A hinged lid displays the piece upright on a counter; a lift-off lid suits keepsakes and medals. Keep foiled logos bold, and ask for a printed card sleeve over the velvet if boxes are posted.
Tell us the jewellery each box holds, the velvet colour, insert style, lid type and logo, and a custom quote comes by email within one working day, with minimums low enough for an independent jeweller. The free proof shows the box, insert and foil placement. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval, boxes arrive by tracked courier to UK mainland addresses, and faulty boxes reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded.

Velvet Boxes with Lids Questions
What buyers ask before ordering velvet boxes with lids.
What is the difference between hinged and lift-off velvet boxes?
A hinged box opens like a book and holds jewellery upright for display. A lift-off box has a separate lid and suits larger items and keepsakes. Both are rigid and velvet covered.
Can my logo be printed on velvet?
Logos on velvet are usually hot foil stamped in gold, silver or rose gold. Keep logos fairly bold, as the pile can soften fine detail. Many brands foil the satin lid lining instead.
Which velvet colour suits gold jewellery?
Navy, bottle green, burgundy and black all set off gold well. Cream and blush suit bridal ranges. We can show colour options on your quote.
Will a ring slot fit a wide band?
Slots are sized to the bands you tell us about. A slot for a slim band will not grip a wide one. Send band widths so the cushion fits.
Can the insert be a different colour to the box?
Yes, a contrasting insert draws the eye to the piece. Cream inside navy or black inside grey are popular. The combination appears on your proof.
Can one box hold a matching set?
Yes, multi-compartment boxes hold a necklace, earrings and bracelet together. It presents the set neatly. Compartments are sized to each piece.
How do I keep velvet boxes looking new?
Store them in cartons, avoid heavy stacking and keep them out of strong sunlight. A soft brush lifts the pile before handing a box over.
Can velvet boxes be used for medals or keepsakes?
Yes, we size a lift-off or hinged box around the item with a fitted pad. They suit medals, coins, christening gifts and mementos.
Do you supply outer sleeves for velvet boxes?
Yes, a printed card sleeve or small paper bag protects the velvet and adds branding. It can be quoted together with the boxes.
How long does an order of velvet boxes take?
Making the velvet boxes with lids takes 4–7 working days from the moment you approve the proof. Tracked delivery of velvet boxes with lids on the UK mainland is free and takes 2–3 working days. Expect the custom quote for your velvet boxes with lids order by email within one working day.
