The Jeweller's Everyday Box
Walk into any jeweller, craft fair or market stall and you will find cotton-filled boxes behind the counter. They are simple, inexpensive and endlessly useful. A piece of jewellery sits on a square of soft cotton wadding, the lid slides on and the item is protected from scratches and tangles. Customers recognise the box straight away as jewellery packaging, which makes a modest purchase feel like a proper gift.
For makers selling handmade jewellery online, cotton-filled boxes are a practical and affordable way to package each order. They are light enough to post in a small padded envelope, and the cotton holds the piece still in transit so it arrives looking just as it did on your workbench. Rigid lidded boxes for higher-value pieces are described on the custom jewellery boxes page, and both can share a logo.
How Custom Cotton-Filled Jewellery Boxes Are Made
A cotton-filled box is usually a two-piece set: a base and a lid that slides over it. Both are made from card, folded and glued at the corners for strength, and wrapped or printed on the outside. A pad of cotton wadding fills the base, often with a thin layer of tissue or a card platform underneath to give it shape.
The cotton cushions the jewellery and stops it from rattling. For earrings, a slotted card or a small foam insert can hold studs upright. For necklaces, a card insert with a slit lets the chain drop behind while the pendant sits on top of the cotton. For rings, a small slotted roll in the cotton grips the band.
- Square boxes for rings, studs and small pendants
- Rectangular boxes for bracelets and longer chains
- Deeper boxes for chunky or statement pieces

Colours, Kraft and Printed Lids
White and kraft are the classic finishes. White looks clean and bright and suits silver and minimal designs, while kraft gives a warm, handmade look that suits artisan makers. Black, navy, deep green and blush pink are also popular, and many brands choose a colour that matches their branding or website.
The lid is the obvious place for your logo. A single colour print is simple and economical, and a foil stamp in gold, silver or rose gold adds a touch of luxury that makes even a small box feel special. Some makers add a tiny sticker seal instead, which allows one plain box to be used for several product lines.
If you are unsure which colour to choose, photograph a few of your pieces on white, kraft and black backgrounds. The colour that makes the metal and stones look their best is usually the right box colour too. Kraft and white lids take print the same way as our kraft boxes with printed logos, with white ink on brown and full colour on white.
Choosing Sizes for Your Range
Most jewellers stock two or three sizes. A small square box of around 50 to 60 mm suits rings and stud earrings. A medium square or rectangle of around 80 to 90 mm takes pendants and drop earrings. A long rectangle suits bracelets, bangles and watches. Deeper boxes of 30 mm or more are useful for chunky rings or stacked sets.
Lay out your bestselling pieces and decide which box suits each. It is far better to have a few sizes that you use constantly than many sizes that sit in a cupboard. If you post orders, check that your most used box fits your chosen envelope or small mailer box.
Unboxing Touches and Tips for Stall Holders
Because cotton-filled boxes are simple, small details get noticed. A printed message inside the lid, such as a thank-you or a care tip, is a lovely surprise. A ribbon or a belly band around the box makes it gift-ready without extra wrapping. A card with the piece's name or the metal type, tucked under the cotton, answers a question customers often have.
Some brands colour the cotton pad itself, or use a coloured tissue under it, to add a flash of brand colour when the lid comes off. Others print the base of the box with a pattern so the inside feels as considered as the outside.
If you sell at markets, keep boxes flat-packed or nested and assembled in batches before each event. A neat stack of branded boxes on the stall is a quiet advert in itself. For online orders, keep a few of each size by the packing bench with cotton pads ready, so packing an order takes seconds.
Store boxes somewhere dry and away from direct sunlight, as coloured card can fade over time. If you sell silver, consider adding a small anti-tarnish strip under the cotton, which helps keep pieces bright for longer. Earring cards for stud pairs are a natural companion; see the earring boxes and card options for the slot style.
Using One Box Across Several Collections
Many makers sell several collections, perhaps a silver line, a gold-plated line and a range of beaded pieces, each with a slightly different feel. Rather than ordering separate boxes for each, a single branded box can be adapted with small changes. A coloured sticker seal, a different ribbon or a printed card under the cotton can signal which collection the piece belongs to without changing the box itself.
This approach keeps stock simple. You order larger quantities of one or two sizes, which brings the unit cost down, and you still give each collection its own personality. When a collection sells out or changes, you only need to update the small extras, not reorder boxes.
If one collection is clearly more premium, such as fine gold or gemstone pieces, it can be worth stepping up to a rigid or hinged box for those items while keeping cotton-filled boxes for everyday pieces. Customers then see a clear difference that matches the price. A single necklace that needs a longer box moves to the long necklace boxes, which use the same cotton pad.
Order Two Sizes, Not Five
Most stall holders over-order sizes. A 50 by 50 mm box takes studs, rings and small pendants; an 80 by 50 mm box takes bracelets, most necklaces coiled on the cotton and larger earrings. Between them those two cover nine jewellery pieces in ten, and buying two sizes in larger quantities costs less per box than five sizes in small lots. Add a third size only when you sell bangles or chunky statement pieces.
Tell us the sizes, colours, quantities and how the logo should be applied, foil or print, and a quote comes back by email within one working day with minimums set per job. The free proof shows the lid with the logo at true size. Boxes are made in 4 to 7 working days after approval and arrive by tracked courier, included for UK mainland addresses; faults reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Makers who post orders as well as sell at fairs usually pair the box with padded mailer envelopes sized to the box.

Cotton-Filled Jewellery Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering Cotton-Filled jewellery boxes.
Is the cotton pad included?
Yes. Each box comes with a cotton wadding pad fitted in the base, ready for your jewellery.
Can I print my logo on the lid?
Yes. We can print it in one or more colours, or foil stamp it in gold, silver or rose gold.
Which size suits stud earrings?
A small square box of around 50 mm is ideal. Add an earring card to hold the studs upright.
Can the box hold a necklace?
Yes. A card insert with a slit lets the chain sit underneath while the pendant rests on the cotton.
Are kraft boxes available?
Yes. Kraft is one of our most popular choices for handmade and artisan jewellery.
Can I order several sizes at once?
Of course. Most makers order two or three sizes with the same logo.
Will the boxes fit in a letterbox envelope?
Our standard depths of around 25 mm fit most small padded envelopes. Check your envelope size and we will confirm.
Can a cotton-filled box come with a ribbon or band already fitted?
Yes. We can supply the boxes with a ribbon tied around the lid or a printed belly band that slides over it, so the box is gift-ready without you tying bows at the stall. The band is printed with your logo or a message and costs less than ribbon on larger runs.
Do cotton-filled boxes arrive assembled with the pad in place?
Yes. The base and lid are made up, the cotton pad is already fitted and the boxes are packed in sleeves of ten or twelve so they stack on a shelf. Open a sleeve at the stall and the boxes are ready to use straight away.
Can the cotton be coloured?
White cotton is standard, but coloured tissue or a coloured pad can be added. Ask when you request your custom quote.
How do I stop silver tarnishing in the box?
Store boxes in a dry place, and consider tucking a small anti-tarnish strip under the cotton for silver pieces.
