The Cheapest Way to Brand a Plain Box

Printed boxes look wonderful, but plenty of online shops send out a dozen carton sizes and cannot justify printing every one. Branded tape fixes that neatly. The same roll seals a small mailer and a large carton, and either way the parcel arrives with your name running across the top. Customers recognise it on the doorstep, neighbours see it in the hallway and couriers handle it knowing it belongs to a real brand.

Tape also works hard behind the scenes. A distinctive printed tape makes it far easier to spot if a carton has been opened and resealed with plain tape on the way, which matters for higher-value goods. Warehouses use coloured or printed tape to tell their own outbound parcels from inbound deliveries at a glance. And because the tape is consumed with every order, it quietly keeps your brand in front of people at no extra effort. p1 Shops that later print their best-selling carton size usually start with boxes printed with the logo for that one size and keep tape for the rest.

Paper Tape or Plastic Tape

Paper tape is made from kraft paper with an adhesive backing. It has a matte, natural look that suits brands using kraft boxes, and it takes print with a slightly softer, earthy appearance. Self-adhesive paper tape works in a normal tape gun; it is a good everyday choice for small and mid-sized shops.

Plastic tape, usually polypropylene, is smooth and glossy and prints bright, sharp colours. It is quieter to unroll than vinyl tape and handles most carton sizes well. Clear plastic tape printed with a logo lets the box colour show through between the letters, while white or coloured plastic gives a solid background that gives the print its strongest contrast.

Both types grip standard corrugated cartons. If your boxes are very dusty, cold or stored in a damp warehouse, mention it and we will suggest an adhesive that copes.

A simple way to choose is to look at your boxes. If they are brown kraft and you like a natural feel, paper tape blends in and the logo looks printed onto the box itself. If your cartons are white or you want the tape to read as a bold stripe, a white or coloured plastic tape gives the strongest contrast.

Designing Branded Packing Tape That Reads Well

Tape is long and narrow, and it is torn off at random lengths. That shapes the design. A logo repeated every 150 to 250 mm makes sure every strip carries at least one full mark, even on a small box. Short words read better than long sentences, because a long line will often be cut in the middle.

Keep the design simple. One or two strong colours on a contrasting background will look sharper than a detailed full-colour image. Popular approaches include a logo and website alternating along the roll, a short message such as 'Handle with care' or 'Your order is here', or a repeating pattern of an icon that makes a stripe of brand colour across the parcel.

If you also want handling instructions, such as 'Fragile' or 'This way up', print them on a separate roll in a warning colour. That keeps your brand tape clean and lets the packer choose the right tape for each parcel. p2 The same design rules apply to carton sealing tape for machine lines, where the repeat is longer.

Widths, Lengths and Tape Guns

The standard width is 48 to 50 mm, which fits almost every handheld tape gun and seals most carton seams. A narrower 25 mm tape suits small mailer boxes and paper bags; a wider 72 or 75 mm tape covers deep seams on heavy cartons and gives more room for print.

Roll length is a balance between fewer roll changes and a weight that is comfortable in the hand. Most branded tape comes on a 76 mm core to fit standard dispensers. If you use an automatic case sealer, tell us the model so we can match the core and roll diameter it takes.

Getting the Most From Each Roll

Use a single strip along the centre seam and short strips across the ends rather than wrapping the box multiple times. It looks neater, keeps the logo readable and makes the tape go further. On mailer boxes, a short strip across the front tuck is often all that is needed; the branded tape then becomes a seal that the customer breaks to open the parcel.

Train packers to start the strip with the logo the right way up on the top of the box. It is a small detail, but a parcel with an upside-down logo looks careless next to one where the brand reads cleanly. Keep rolls in a cool, dry place and stand them on their ends so the edges do not flatten.

Some shops alternate between two designs, such as the logo on one roll and a thank-you message on another. The variety makes repeat customers notice the parcels. p2 If the parcel also carries a note, a sheet of tissue paper printed with the logo inside the box echoes the tape outside.

Who Uses Printed Tape

Online clothing brands, subscription boxes and homeware sellers are the most common buyers, because they send high volumes in plain cartons. Wholesalers and distributors use it to mark their own stock, and removal and storage companies print their name and phone number on tape so customers remember who packed their belongings. Even small makers who send a few parcels a day find a roll of branded tape makes their brown boxes feel finished.

Branded tape is also handy for businesses that send out samples, documents or spare parts to trade customers. A carton sealed with your name arrives looking official, and the person who signs for it in a busy goods-in area knows straight away who it is from. For returns, a customer reusing your box for a return will often reseal it with plain tape, which makes returned parcels easy to separate from new ones in your warehouse. p1 Clothing sellers who post in bags rather than boxes get a similar effect from poly mailers printed with the brand.

Measure Your Smallest Box Before You Set the Repeat

The design decision that matters most on tape is the repeat length, and it should be set by your smallest carton, not your biggest. If your mailers are 200 mm long, a logo repeating every 250 mm will often be cut off on both ends of a strip. Measure the shortest seam you tape and ask for a repeat about two-thirds of that length, so every strip carries at least one full logo.

Then choose paper or plastic by looking at your boxes: paper on kraft looks printed on, plastic on white reads as a bold stripe. Tell us the width your tape guns take, the roll length and how many rolls a month you use. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day and the minimum is set per job.

The free proof shows the repeat drawn to scale on a strip; once approved, production takes 4 to 7 working days and rolls reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery. Shops that want a warning roll too often add plain coloured tape for handling marks to the order.

Branded Packing Tape Questions

What buyers ask before ordering branded packing tape.

Will branded tape fit my normal tape gun?

Our standard 48 to 50 mm rolls are wound on 76 mm cores, which fit almost all handheld tape guns. Paper tape and plastic tape both work in standard dispensers. If you use a different dispenser, tell us its core size.

How often should the logo repeat along the roll?

A repeat every 150 to 250 mm makes sure most strips show at least one full logo. On smaller boxes, a shorter repeat works better. The proof shows the repeat length so you can judge it.

Paper or plastic tape, which looks better?

Paper tape has a natural, matte look that suits kraft boxes and craft brands. Plastic tape prints brighter, sharper colours and suits bold branding. Both seal standard cartons well.

Can I print a full-colour photo on tape?

Tape is narrow and torn at random points, so photos rarely read well. Simple logos, short words and patterns in one or two colours look much sharper. We can suggest a design approach if you send your logo.

Does a printed tape help show if a parcel has been opened?

Yes. A distinctive printed tape is hard to replace without it being noticed, so a parcel resealed with plain tape is obvious at goods-in. It is not a security seal, but many brands use it as a deterrent on higher-value goods.

Can I order tape in my brand colour?

Yes, coloured tape backgrounds and Pantone-matched inks are available. Exact matching depends on the tape material, so we show the colours on the proof. Clear tape lets your box colour show through instead.

Will the tape stick to cold or dusty cartons?

Standard adhesives grip clean corrugated cartons well. For cold warehouses or dusty boxes, a different adhesive may perform better. Tell us your conditions and we will recommend one.

Can I have two designs in one order?

Yes, many shops order a logo roll and a message roll together. Each design is priced on its own quantity in the custom quote. Using both adds variety for repeat customers.

Do you make rolls for automatic case sealers?

Yes, long machine rolls are available in standard widths. Send us your sealer model so we can match the core and roll diameter. Machine rolls usually work out cheaper per metre.

Is branded tape enough without printed boxes?

For many online shops it is. Plain cartons with branded tape look smart and cost far less than printing every box size. You can always add printed boxes later for your best-selling sizes.
