Custom Premium Rigid Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom premium rigid boxes are built from thick greyboard wrapped in fine paper, so they feel solid in the hand and never fold flat or crease the way a carton does. We make lift-off lid, magnetic, drawer and book-style rigid boxes with foil, embossing, ribbon pulls and fitted inserts for launches, gift sets and high-value products.

What Makes a Box Feel Premium

People judge quality by touch before they read a single word. A rigid box has weight, sharp corners and walls that do not give when squeezed. The lid slides off with a slight resistance as air escapes, or closes with the soft click of a magnet. These physical cues tell a customer that what is inside has been treated with care, and they set expectations for the product itself.

The construction is simple to describe but slow to make well. A greyboard core, usually 1.5 to 2.5 mm thick, is cut and formed into the box shape, then wrapped in a printed or textured paper that folds over every edge and into the inside. The precision of those folds, especially at the corners, is where a good rigid box differs from a cheap one.

Unlike folding cartons, rigid boxes are not delivered flat in most styles. They arrive made up, ready to fill. That takes more space in transit and storage, which is part of why they cost more, but it is also why they feel so substantial.

Choosing a Premium Rigid Box Style

The two-piece lift-off lid box is the classic. A base and a lid, often with the lid covering the full depth or stopping part way down to show a contrasting base. It suits jewellery, watches, cosmetics sets and gift collections. A neck or shoulder box adds an inner collar that the lid rests on, giving a stepped look and a tighter fit.

Magnetic closure boxes have a hinged lid with a flap that closes onto the front using concealed magnets. They open like a book and suit products presented on an insert, such as fragrance, spirits and tech accessories. Book-style boxes look like a hardback on a shelf, which makes them popular for gift sets and collectors' editions.

Drawer boxes slide out of a sleeve, often with a ribbon pull. They create a slow, deliberate reveal that suits small luxury items. Collapsible rigid boxes fold flat for shipping and pop into shape with magnets, combining a rigid feel with lower storage costs. The magnetic flap version is on our book style rigid boxes with magnets page.

Wrapping Papers and Decoration

The wrap is the surface customers see and touch. Printed art paper takes full colour artwork, from photographs to detailed patterns. Uncoated textured papers, such as linen, felt or laid finishes, give a tactile quality that printing alone cannot match. Speciality papers include pearlescent, metallic and leather-effect stocks that make a strong statement with very little print.

Foil stamping is the most common decoration, applying a metallic or coloured foil in a precise design. Gold, silver, copper and rose gold are popular, as are matt black and white foils for subtle contrast. Blind embossing raises a logo without colour, debossing presses it in. Combined with foil, embossing gives a raised metallic logo that catches light and fingers alike.

Spot UV adds a gloss pattern on a matt surface, visible only when the light catches it. Soft touch lamination gives a velvety finish and makes dark colours look especially rich.

Inserts and the Unboxing Moment

The insert decides what the customer sees when the lid comes off. A card insert wrapped in the same paper as the box looks clean. A foam insert covered in velvet or satin holds watches, jewellery and glass securely. A raised platform or a tray with ribbon lifts makes it easy to remove the product.

Think about the order in which things are revealed. A tissue layer, a printed welcome card, then the product in its cavity creates a moment the customer remembers. For sets, arrange the hero product in the centre with supporting items around it.

Ribbon pulls under the product, magnetic flaps that stay open on their own and lids with a thumb notch all make the box easier and more pleasant to use. Jewellers usually specify velvet inserts for jewellery in the same colour as the lining.

Sizing Around Valuable Products

Measure the product and any accessories, then decide on the insert, because the insert takes up space inside the box. A rigid box should fit snugly, with the product held still by the insert rather than by the walls. Allow for the board thickness on each side, which is significant at 2 mm or more.

If the box will travel by post, plan an outer shipper as well. A rigid box is strong but its wrapped corners can scuff in transit. A plain or printed corrugated mailer sized to the rigid box keeps it pristine.

Think about storage before you order. Because most rigid boxes arrive assembled, a run of large boxes can fill a surprising amount of space. If storage is tight, collapsible magnetic styles or a smaller first run with repeat orders later are both sensible options. We can keep your artwork and dielines ready so a repeat is quick.

For launches with a fixed date, work backwards: proof approval, 4–7 working days of production, 2–3 working days of delivery and time to pack each box by hand. Packing rigid boxes with inserts, tissue and cards takes longer than people expect.

Who Orders Rigid Gift Packaging

Jewellery and watch brands, perfume houses, spirits producers, tech accessory brands, cosmetics companies and luxury food makers are our main rigid box customers. PR agencies order them for influencer packages and product launches, and corporate teams use them for high-value client gifts.

Small brands also choose rigid boxes for a hero product or a limited edition while keeping folding cartons for the everyday range.

Rigid boxes are also kept. Customers reuse them for jewellery, keepsakes, cables or letters, and a box with your logo foiled on the lid stays on a dressing table or a desk long after the product has been used. That afterlife is a quiet but real part of the value of choosing rigid packaging. Gifts for clients that carry a second logo are covered by our corporate gift boxes with two logos.

Hold the Wrap Swatch Against the Product

A premium box is judged by the paper it is wrapped in, so ask for wrap swatches before anything else and hold them against the product: a matt black against a glass bottle, a linen cream against a leather strap. That one step settles the wrap, and the foil and the lining follow from it. Then measure the product with any packaging it keeps, such as a watch on its cushion or a bottle with its cap, and tell us the style, lift-off lid, shoulder, magnetic or drawer, and whether the box ships made up or collapsible. Decide the insert, foam, velvet or card, by the weight and the value of the product. Artwork is a logo for the foil and any lining print, sent as vector files, and the free proof shows the wrap layout, the foil areas and the insert. A custom quote comes by email within one working day, minimums are worked out per job so a limited edition run is fine, and boxes are made in 4–7 working days after approval with free tracked UK mainland delivery. Boxes that open like a book use the same wraps on our hinged lid rigid boxes page.

Premium Rigid Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering premium rigid boxes.

How thick is the board in a premium rigid box?

Usually 1.5 to 2.5 mm greyboard, wrapped in printed or textured paper. Thicker board feels more substantial and suits heavier products.

Do premium rigid boxes ship made up or flat?

Most styles arrive made up and ready to fill, nested where the sizes allow. Collapsible magnetic rigid boxes are the exception and fold flat to save storage space, then pop into shape. The quote states which you are getting and the packed carton size.

Which style suits a perfume launch?

Magnetic closure and book-style boxes are popular for fragrance because they open like a book onto the bottle in its insert. A shoulder box with a lift-off lid suits a heavier, more classic look. Both can take a foil logo and a lined interior.

Can you combine foil and embossing on a logo?

Yes, foil with embossing gives a raised metallic logo that catches the light. Vector artwork gives the crispest foil and emboss edges.

What insert suits a watch?

A velvet-covered foam cushion or a fitted foam cavity holds a watch securely and looks premium when the lid is lifted. The cushion keeps the strap curved and the face upright. A slot beside it can hold the warranty card.

Can I order a small run for a limited edition?

Yes, minimums are worked out per job, so a limited edition of a few dozen is possible. Short runs are priced per job rather than per thousand. The wrap and the foil die are kept for a reorder.

Will a rigid box survive the post on its own?

It is strong, but the wrapped corners can scuff. We recommend a corrugated outer mailer for posted orders.

Should I choose a lift-off lid or a shoulder box for a watch?

A shoulder box has an inner collar that the lid rests on, giving a stepped look and a tighter fit, which suits a watch or jewellery. A lift-off lid sits directly on the base and is simpler and a little cheaper. Both take the same inserts.

Can the box have a ribbon pull?

Yes, ribbon pulls can be fitted to drawer boxes, under inserts or on lids to make opening easier. The ribbon colour is matched to the wrap or the foil. It is fitted during assembly.

Can you use textured or leather-effect paper?

Yes, textured, metallic and leather-effect papers are available. They add a tactile quality that printing alone cannot match.
