Custom Rigid Briefcase Boxes
Custom rigid briefcase boxes look and carry like a miniature case, with a handle on top and a hinged lid that closes with a clasp, magnet or tab. Brands use them for PR kits, gift sets and product launches where the box itself should feel like part of the gift.

A Gift Box You Carry
Most gift boxes are handed over and then put down. A briefcase box invites people to pick it up by the handle and walk off with it, which changes the whole experience. At an event, guests carry them through the room and everyone sees the branding. Delivered to an office, the recipient carries it to their desk rather than leaving it in reception.
Underneath, it is a rigid box: thick greyboard covered in printed or coloured paper, with a lid hinged along the back. The handle is fixed to the top edge, usually rope, ribbon, leatherette or a die-cut card grip. The front closes with a magnetic flap, a metal or card clasp, or a simple tuck tab. Opened, it lies flat like a case on a table, which suits presenting several items at once.
Because the box is rigid, it survives being carried, set down and reopened many times. Recipients often keep it to store documents, craft supplies or small keepsakes. p2 The folding alternative with a handle is our briefcase-style boxes in folding board.
When Brands Choose This Format
Influencer and press kits are the most common use. A beauty brand might send a new range in a briefcase box with a shaped insert for each product. A drinks company might include a bottle, two glasses and a printed card. A tech start-up might send a branded hoodie, notebook and gadget to new hires on their first day.
Corporate gifting is another strong fit, particularly for client hampers, retirement gifts and partner thank-yous. Children's brands like the format too, because a box with a handle feels like a toy in itself; colouring sets and craft kits are often sold this way.
The format works less well for very small or very heavy items. A single lipstick looks lost in a case, and a heavy bottle of spirits is better served by a sturdy bottle box. The briefcase shines when there are three to six items to arrange, each with its own place, and when the person receiving it will carry it somewhere. p2 Bottle gifts on their own go in our book-style gift boxes with a magnetic flap.

Handles, Clasps and Hinges
The handle sets the tone. Cotton or polyester rope looks friendly and casual; satin ribbon feels elegant; leatherette straps with metal fittings feel closest to a real case. A die-cut handle formed from the board itself is the most economical and lies flat, but it is less comfortable for heavy contents.
Closures matter just as much. Hidden magnets behind the front flap give a soft, satisfying click and are the most popular choice for PR kits. Metal clasps look striking but add weight and cost. Card tabs that tuck into a slot are simple and reliable for lighter contents.
Ask us about weight early. A box carrying a bottle or several glass jars needs reinforced handle fixings and a sturdier hinge than one carrying cosmetics or stationery. p2 The board grades are explained on our greyboard boxes page.
Laying Out the Inside
The insert is what turns a box into a presentation. Foam inserts with cut cavities hold glass and electronics securely; card inserts give a cleaner look and suit lighter items; fabric-lined inserts add luxury. Products can sit in the base, with the lid carrying a printed message or a pocket for a letter.
List every item that goes in, with dimensions, and tell us which one is the hero product. We arrange the layout so that item sits front and centre when the lid opens, with supporting items around it. Cavities should be slightly larger than the product so it lifts out easily without the insert tearing.
Printing the inside of the lid is one of the most effective touches. A short welcome message, a photo or a pattern turns the opening moment into something worth sharing. p2 Foam layouts for glass are shown on our foam inserts page.
Wrap Papers and Decoration
The outer wrap can be printed in full colour, so the box carries photographs, patterns or full brand artwork. Alternatively, a coloured or textured paper with a foil logo gives a quieter, more premium result. Linen-textured and leather-grain papers suit the briefcase look particularly well.
Foil stamping, embossing and spot UV all work on wrap papers. A soft-touch laminate gives a velvety feel. Matching tissue, a ribbon pull to lift the insert, and a printed card in the lid complete the set.
Colour choice can carry the theme of a campaign. A launch for a summer drinks range might use a bright wrap with a white rope handle, while a financial firm sending client gifts might prefer navy linen paper with a silver foil crest and a leatherette strap. Ask for two colourways on the proof if you want to compare.
Corners take the most wear when a box is carried and set down. A wrap paper with a slightly heavier weight or a laminate finish resists scuffing, and keeping dark solid colours away from the corners helps hide any marks. p3 The wraps and foils are compared in the guide to print and finish options.
Timing a PR or Launch Mailing
PR kits usually have a fixed date, such as a product launch or event. Work backwards: allow time for the proof and any changes, then 4 to 7 working days of production after approval, then 2 to 3 working days for free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses. Add your own time for packing the boxes and couriering them to recipients.
Briefcase boxes arrive assembled, so plan storage space. If you are mailing them, each box will need an outer shipping carton to protect the wrap and handle; we can supply plain shippers sized to fit.
For larger mailings, ask for a single sample box first and pack it with the real products. It confirms the insert fit and lets you check the total weight for courier pricing before the full run is made.
Name the Hero Item and Weigh the Whole Kit
A briefcase box is laid out around one product, so tell us which item is the hero before you list the rest; it sits front and centre when the lid opens and everything else is arranged around it. Then weigh the complete kit, because the handle fixing and the hinge are specified from that figure, and a kit with a bottle in it needs reinforcement that a kit of cosmetics does not. Send each item's dimensions with that weight.
Choose the handle and the closure for the audience: rope for a casual launch, leatherette with a magnetic flap for a client gift. Ask for two colourways on the proof if you want to compare. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day with the minimum set per job, so a PR mailing of thirty is a normal order.
The free proof shows the wrap, the inside-lid print and the insert layout. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval, and because the boxes arrive built, they need storage room; delivery to UK mainland addresses is free and tracked. Agencies posting the kits usually add our rigid PR boxes without a handle for the simpler mailings.

Rigid Briefcase Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering rigid briefcase boxes.
What handle options are available?
Rope, satin ribbon, leatherette straps and die-cut card handles. Rope and leatherette suit heavier contents; die-cut handles are the most economical.
How heavy can a rigid briefcase box be loaded?
A standard build with a rope handle carries a kit of cosmetics or stationery comfortably, up to about a kilogram. A bottle or several glass jars needs reinforced handle fixings and a stronger hinge, so send the packed weight and we build to it.
Which closure is most popular for PR kits?
Hidden magnets behind the front flap are the favourite. They close with a soft click and keep the front of the box clean.
Can the inside of a briefcase box lid carry a message?
Yes. The inside of the lid is printed on the same wrap, so a welcome note, a photograph or a pattern costs little and is often the part that gets photographed when the kit is opened. Keep the text short and clear of the hinge.
Do you make foam inserts for glass items?
Yes. Foam inserts with cut cavities hold bottles, jars and glasses securely. Card inserts suit lighter items and look cleaner.
Can I post briefcase boxes directly?
They should go inside an outer shipping carton to protect the wrap and handle. We can supply plain shippers sized to fit.
Does a rigid briefcase box arrive flat?
No. Rigid boxes are built from greyboard that cannot be folded flat without damage, so they arrive assembled and nested where the sizes allow. Plan storage space for the delivery, especially for a mailing of a hundred or more.
Can I mix two designs in one order?
Yes, for example one design for clients and one for staff. Each design is proofed and quoted within the same order.
Which paper gives the most case-like look?
Leather-grain or linen-textured papers with a foil logo look closest to a real briefcase. A leatherette handle completes the effect.
How much time should I allow before a launch date?
Allow for proofing, 4 to 7 working days of production and 2 to 3 working days of free tracked delivery, plus your own packing and courier time. Four weeks before the launch is comfortable.
Can children's craft kits use this box?
Yes. A briefcase box with a rope handle and a card insert for pens and paper makes a popular craft set that children can carry.
