Custom Rigid Setup Boxes
A setup box is built to its final shape from thick greyboard wrapped in printed or textured paper, and unlike a folding carton it never collapses flat. Custom rigid setup boxes are the classic choice for watches, fine accessories, fragrances and luxury gifts that deserve a box people keep.

What Makes a Box a Setup Box
The term setup box comes from the way it is made. Instead of being printed and folded from a single sheet, each part of the box is built up: a greyboard base and lid are cut, scored and formed into trays, the corners are reinforced, and then a printed or decorative paper is wrapped over the outside and turned in over the edges. The result is a box that arrives already set up, ready to use.
That construction gives setup boxes their character. The walls are thick and stiff, the corners are crisp, and the box has real weight. When customers pick one up, they feel the quality before they see the product. It is the reason luxury watch, jewellery and fragrance brands use setup boxes so widely.
The trade-off is storage. Setup boxes take up the same space empty as full, so plan room for stock before ordering.
The wrapping is applied by hand or semi-automatically, which means each box has a crafted quality that machine-folded cartons do not. Edges are turned in neatly, corners are tight, and the inside of the box can be lined with a different paper for contrast. That level of detail is part of why setup boxes are associated with premium goods. p3 The premium end of the range is shown on our premium rigid boxes page.
Classic Setup Box Styles
The simplest is the two-piece setup box, a base with a separate lid that lifts off. A full telescope lid covers the base completely; a shallower lid leaves part of the base visible. A shoulder box adds an inner collar between the base and lid, so the lid sits on a ledge and a strip of contrasting colour shows when closed.
Hinged lid setup boxes attach the lid to the base along one edge, often with a magnetic catch to keep it closed. Drawer setup boxes slide out of a rigid sleeve. Book-style setup boxes open like a hardback cover. Each style changes the way customers open the box and suits different products.
The style you choose also affects packing speed. Two-piece boxes are the quickest to pack and close. Hinged and magnetic boxes take a moment longer but give a more controlled reveal. Drawer boxes need the product placed in the tray before the sleeve goes on, which suits smaller, flatter items. p2 Hinged and magnetic versions are covered on our hinged lid rigid boxes page.

Wrapping Papers and Surface Effects
The wrapping paper is what customers see and touch, and the range is wide. Printed art paper carries full-colour designs. Uncoated and textured papers, such as linen, felt-marked and laid patterns, give a crafted feel. Leatherette and soft-touch laminated papers mimic premium materials. Coloured papers can be left plain and finished with a foil logo for a clean, confident look.
On top of the paper, foil stamping, embossing and debossing add detail. A deep debossed logo on a soft-touch black wrap needs no ink at all and reads clearly from any angle. A blind embossed pattern across the whole lid gives texture without colour. Spot UV adds gloss accents to printed designs.
Think about wear as well as appearance. Uncoated textured papers look beautiful but can mark with handling, while laminated papers resist fingerprints and scuffs. For boxes that will be handled often in a shop, a laminated or coated wrap keeps them looking new for longer. p2 Foil and deboss on wrapped board are compared in the guide to print and finish options.
Inserts for High-Value Products
Rigid boxes usually carry valuable products, so the insert matters. Foam inserts cut to the exact shape of a watch, bottle or device hold it firmly and look precise. Card inserts wrapped in the same paper as the box give a cohesive look. Velvet-effect and flocked inserts add a soft, rich surface for jewellery and watches.
Watch boxes often use a pillow or cuff that the strap wraps around, set into a cut-out in the insert. Fragrance boxes use a shaped cradle for the bottle. Gift sets use multi-cavity inserts that hold several items in a balanced arrangement.
Consider including a space for paperwork. Warranty cards, provenance cards and care booklets fit neatly under the insert or in a slim compartment in the lid, keeping everything together and presented. p2 Flocked and velvet inserts are shown on our velvet inserts page.
Why Brands Choose Setup Boxes
Luxury customers expect the packaging to match the price. A product presented in a heavy, beautifully finished box feels worth more, and the opening moment becomes part of the purchase. For gifts, the box often matters as much as the item.
Setup boxes are also kept. Watch boxes become storage for straps, jewellery boxes for other pieces, and gift boxes for keepsakes. Each time the box is reused, the brand is seen again. For premium brands, that long life is a large part of the value.
They also protect well. Thick greyboard resists crushing and knocks, and a well-fitted insert holds the product securely in shop stockrooms and during delivery.
Retail partners appreciate them too, because a rigid box sits squarely in a display cabinet and does not crease or dent when customers handle it.
Planning Sizes and Board Thickness
Start with the product and its insert. Measure the product, decide how much insert material surrounds it, and that gives the internal size. Greyboard thickness, typically between 1.5 and 2.5 mm for most setup boxes, adds to the outside dimensions, and the wrapping paper adds a little more.
Thicker board feels more substantial and protects better, but adds weight and cost. For small items such as rings and watches, a medium board looks proportionate. For larger gift sets and bottles, a thicker board keeps the walls stiff.
If you sell several products, a family of setup boxes in proportional sizes with the same wrap and finish looks coherent on a shelf. Matching the height across the range, and varying only the width and length, helps boxes line up neatly in displays.
Clear a Shelf for the Delivery Before You Order
The decision that surprises first-time buyers of setup boxes is not the price but the space: the boxes arrive built and take the same room empty as full, so five hundred watch boxes need a shelf before the courier turns up. If that room does not exist, say so, and we will quote a rigid foldable box in the same wrap that arrives flat. Then send the product dimensions, the style and the wrapping paper you have in mind.
Choose the board thickness from the product's weight, 1.5 mm for jewellery and 2.5 mm for a bottle, and decide if a lining paper in a second colour is wanted, because it is applied during the build. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day, from £0.25 depending on size, wrap and insert, with the minimum set per job.
The free proof shows the box and the insert together. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the built boxes reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery in bulkier cartons than flat stock. Watch and jewellery brands often add our shoulder boxes with an inner collar for the flagship pieces.

Rigid Setup Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering rigid setup boxes.
What is the difference between a setup box and a folding box?
A setup box is built from thick greyboard wrapped in paper and keeps its shape permanently. A folding box is printed and folded from one sheet and ships flat.
Do setup boxes fold flat for storage?
No. A setup box is built to its final shape and stays that way, so it takes the same room empty as full. If storage space is tight, our rigid foldable boxes give a similar wrapped finish and arrive flat.
What board thickness do you use?
Most setup boxes use greyboard between 1.5 and 2.5 mm thick, chosen according to the size and weight of the product. A small ring box is fine at 1.5 mm; a bottle box wants 2.5 mm.
Can you make a watch box with a pillow?
Yes, a watch pillow or cuff set into a cut insert holds the watch with the strap wrapped around it. Send the case diameter and strap width so the cuff is sized to it.
Which wrapping paper looks most luxurious?
Soft-touch laminated paper, leatherette and textured linen papers are popular, often with a foil or debossed logo. Laminated papers also resist fingerprints in a shop.
Can the lid be hinged with a magnet?
Yes. The lid is joined to the base along one edge by the wrapping paper, and magnets set under the paper hold it shut with no visible catch.
What is a shoulder box?
It is a setup box with an inner collar between the base and lid, so the lid rests on a ledge and a strip of contrasting colour shows. The lid also slides off more slowly, which feels premium.
Can you match our brand colour on the wrap?
We can print a Pantone colour on art paper or source a coloured paper close to your brand colour. The proof shows which route we have used.
Are setup boxes strong enough for delivery?
Yes, thick greyboard resists knocks well, and the box can go inside a shipping carton for courier delivery. Keep the corners of the wrap protected in transit.
Can I see a proof before production?
Yes, every order comes with a free proof of the box and insert before anything is made. A plain structural sample can be made as well if the fit is critical.
Can a setup box have a lining in a different colour?
Yes. The inside of the base and lid can be lined with a separate paper, so a black outer wrap can open onto a coloured or printed interior. The lining shows on your proof.
